I don’t know how many versions Streisand did but I just listened to one she did at 19 or 20 on David Frost and while Kristen Chenoworth did a good job Streisand made that a part of television history - it was stellar
Barbara Streisand’s version on the 1962 Ed Sullivan show was beyond comparison. The most beautiful rendition of this song ever sung by any singer. She had such a beautiful voice.
Kristen Chenoweth, as well as Lea Michele, undeniably is a marvelous vocalist. She sings this song very beautifully. However, may I share my observation on how Barbra Streisand sang it, too? She revealed her approach to song on the Rosie O'Donnell Show in 2000, which she called "Less is More". She has been using this technique, which she naturally discovered by herself, since she started singing in the 1960s. She just feels the song/story (as if she were the lyricist and as if she really had experienced those incidents for real), she doesn't care too much about the vocals, but the effect is so intense. It really comes from her soul. I have noticed that Streisand's vocals (in this song, for example) are not as impeccable as Kristen's. But Streisand's rendition just captures my heart so deeply. She says, she is IN THE MOMENT when she sings. When I listen to her (for example, at the Person of the Year Awards, 2012), it is like she's doing meditation when singing. She acts on the EMOTIONAL level, not the vocal level. And she lets her emotion bring out any kind of sound that the spontaneous emotion produces. With all due respect, until Feb 2023, I've never heard any great vocalists with that kind of technique---many of them just act on the vocal level. I can't help wishing there was another Barbra Streisand in this era. How come there has been only ONE in the past 60 years?
Kristin is brave to take on this song which was made memorable long ago by Barbra Streisand. Her interpretation is notably different and I have to give her full credit for doing a great job.
Barbra wasn’t actually the first to make the song famous. Sandy Stewart was the first to perform and record the song and she got a Grammy nomination for it. Barbra recorded it soon after, along with other singers like Dusty Springfield and Brenda Lee. I do think Kristin made it her own, and Barbra’s is probably the most enduring recording given the great love for her second album.
This song has 2 really great poetic lines. "These are the eyes that watched him as he walked away, color them grey." "He was the man who's love I depended upon, Color him gone. I wish somebody would think up some other verses that had the names of colors in them. Here's the wo-man who feels she'd be better off dead, Color her red.
If that's true, it would be one of the few songs they ever wrote together that wasn't from a Broadway score. I'm also still puzzled as to why Liza never recorded this superb song.
"Maybe This Time" -- one of their most famous songs -- was not written as part of a show. It was included in the movie version of Cabaret, but it had been written by itself several years earlier.
Only 100% better!! The only other version that comes close is one by Dinah Shore. And it's also odd that Liza Minnelli, knowing her life long friendship with John Kander and Fred Ebb hasn't ever recorded this song.
Too theatrical for my tastes. Barbra Streisand's version was not suited for her either. Listen to SANDY STEWART's definitive original version and another rendition by JULIE LONDON and that's where I feel the emotional connection.
WELL I'M 64 years old since AGE 13 Barbra has been my favorite singer, BYE barbra I have a new one , like the younger people say YOUR THE BOMB!!!!!!!!!!
