I have been on a spiritual path for the last 20 years and after a long and often frustrating journey became determined to learn Kriya yoga. I quickly discovered however that finding information on the actual techniques was not easy. As an answer to my prayer I suppose, I found this channel and listened to several of your videos and immediately knew you were exactly what I was looking for. I bought your book Continuing the Lineage and The Eternal Way by Mr. Davis. You have helped me immeasurably and I just wanted you to know how truly grateful I am.

Ryan, As a fallen away 65 year old SRF-er, also somewhat cynical -- I "out-of-the-blue" did a RU-vid search for Kriya yoga last October 2018, and finding your videos and your honest demeanor has reignited my meditation practice and lifted my seriousness to a new high. I have had Roy Davis' books at my bedside table and have found your video discussions with him also very inspirational. I honor his passing by messaging you about the help that your involvement in the lineage has provided me.

My experience is very similar Patrick! I was an SRF student around 1980. I left SRF and explored different paths, eventually landing in Shin Buddhism (which I still practice). I found this very video which introduced me to Roy Eugene Davis. I loved his books and a very Buddhistic and practical approach. I wrote to him and he sent my a DVD to consider as my initiation into Kriya, although in a very real way, this RU-vid video by Ryan was my Kriya initiation and changed my life! Since Mr Davis's passing Ryan is my primary source for Kriya information and inspiration. I highly recommend Ryan's books as well.

Same here, Patrick. 69 and found Ryan several months ago. Refreshing, honest, knowledgeable, authentic teacher who inspires me to resume the practices. Also appreciated a newer more relaxed, flexible, intuitive, creative addition to the practices and lifestyle rather than a rigid by-the-book dogmatic one.

Thank you for this instruction on kriya yoga techniques. I just read Yogananda's autobiography and became intrigued about kriya yoga. I appreciate it when clear instructions are given and you did this very well, Ryan. I look forward to incorporating this into my life and trying to achieve a heightened awareness. The autobiography was amazing. I love how the masters and gurus (like Babaji) were appearing all over the place following their deaths. I thought only Jesus had done this.

Namaste. I am deeply grateful for your videos. They are very clear and come from a very pure source, I think many more people would practice Kriya Yoga if it was more accessible, but the teachings seem to be quite obscure, preventing one from fully embracing this path. This is unfortunate because I feel it is ideal for many westerners as it is so systematic and straightforward. I thank you for your seva, for making these sacred techniques more accessible to the sincere seeker.

I agree with Ryan that meditating with an 'organization' is not necessary. I did my initial Kriya training and initiation with Self Realization Fellowship, but there are many paths to Kriya. I don't have a problem with SRF, but after years of meditating alone, I attempted to join a local SRF group and meditate with them once per week. I really did not enjoy the experience - I would rather be a lone Yogi. Also, there are a bewildering array of Kriya techniques out there if you search YT videos. Take 2-3 and stick with them. It becomes way too confusing (at least for me) to do techniques that don't seem to jive with me. I do the basic Hang Sau and Kriya 1 - Kriya 1 being the basic technique that Ryan demos here in the video - inhale (Ha - cool air) to the 6th Chakra, then exhale ('eee' - warm air down to the base chakra). That's it. I don't need to make it more complicated than that - 20 - 30 min 2X per day -sometimes more if I have the time. The practice that works is the one that you do consistently.

This is very random, but time/space isn't really linear anyway. I have been breathing kriya almost 30 years, and am a direct initiate into a kriya lineage that essentially makes me Ryan's spiritual cousin ( one of Yogananadaji's lone wolf students is my paramguru). I have not even bothered to google the world of Kriya outside of my own life until last week, and have been pleasantly surprised by how much the digital world has changed things. Albeit perhaps adding layers of confusion. But I am here to attest that what you describe ( and Ryan is teaching here) is what I was taught; these are the basics. Lovely, and true. I will add that I do use the mantra that can accompany kriya proper, and also, over the years I have taken to breathing kriya with my mouth closed. I was given the green light by the lineage to do so about six years ago. I have read that Yogananada was originally taught to breathe kriya with a closed mouth, but thought westerners would benefit from an open mouth technique as it reinforces the susumanic tube or tunnel ( ida) on a gross level, but who knows? Maybe some of his western sudents were unable to nostril breathe all the time? I have found this to be rather arbitrary, and have done both open and closed mouth inhalations depending on the moment at hand. Also arbitrary in my experience is the use of the mantra vs. aaa-eeee. Many blessings from one lone- wolf kriyaban to another.

For about the last 10 months I have been using the HeadSpace guided meditation app. It has helped me calm & quiet my mind - find peace and happiness. But I am beginning to out grow that app - as I’ve grown, the spoken guidance is becoming a distraction rather than the necessary aid it was in the beginning. Now I play quiet meditation back ground music - or nothing - but use the Insight Timer app to time/end my meditation. I greatly enjoyed this helpful video - I feel that I’ve gotten to a place where I can begin learning & practicing Kriya Yoga Meditation. Thank you Ryan 🙏

I just realized I was using the same breathing technique as a teenager to draw in energy from the Earth, then I'd hold it and release it suddenly out my head while visualizing broken/flickering streetlights turning on...and it worked. I'm sure the average person would think I'm nuts but I did it hundreds, if not thousands of times and I know what I experienced. I didn't have any structured way of working with energy so I did what somehow felt natural.

Ryan - Just one question - I have watched Kriya techniques where people breath through the nose vice breathing through the mouth. The original technique that I learned from SRF has people breathing through the mouth - both the in-breath and out-breath. The in-breath is an almost a HA sound feeling the cool air moving through the back of the throat. The exhale is an 'EEE' sound with the exhalation of warmer air - again through the mouth. It's been a while since I have read the SRF lessons on this (I don't have the original lessons anymore). I just wanted to confirm what I remember. I prefer the mouth breathing vice the nose breathing. Comments? Suggestions?

It wash all my emotional and mental garbage. It's so healing. Also my psychical body sometimes shakes the tension store within. But I don't practise sound meditation. It blows me away. I hear bells, rivers...I realy feel my consciousness is cleaned but after meditation I'm almost like dead. No need to talk or do anything. I become to introverted and that's scary...

But in true the more I dive deep into meditation state the more sad I look to the outer world and worldly people. It's confusing. First I was playing with meditation..but afte few years 3, 4, 5 years...than at once I desolve into the inner space. Sow the light...dissaper... I vant to return home man...

I tend to get headaches after doing these exercises daily for a while, which I feel very sad about because other than that I love the soothing feeling in my spine. At the moment how I solve this problem is by attaching an inner chi-gong practice afterwards ( which is breathing up my back through my spine and exhaling down my front body and collecting my chi in my abdomen afterwards) which currently the only solution that elevates the headaches for me. I just wonder if anybody else experiences headaches after spinal breathing Kriya yoga and if there are some other specific Kriya Yoga explanations or/and solutions for this issue. Lots of love. keep up the good work Ryan

Inhalation is through the mouth in both techniques but can you clarify how exhalation is done. Is it through the mouth again or through the nose.

hi Ryan when bringing the current up through the chakras during Kriya pranayama and dhoti mudra, are you also at the same time lightly constricting the root chakra as with the life force arousal technique?

when I was initiated, I was taught the 2nd chakra is slightly above the first at almost navel level, and then the third chakra is where the solar plexus is. makes sense to me, but I see some techniques are different locations for 2nd and third chakra. any idea why

Do all the 14 sequences need to be contiguous i.e. to be done without a break, or can we have normal breathing in between? This is important as the mind may not be able to maintain focus entirely during the procedures without break.

Ryan, I find that my mind is habitually silent nowadays, almost no thoughts happen, and at times they do come up. But I am wondering how perhaps the teachings of eckhart tolle compare with kriya yoga and it’s desired state. Do they essentially arrive at the same state? Also I find that practicing kriya is actually disturbing to my current state of non thinking, it makes it more difficult, agitates my system in a way that I cannot practice it as effectively. Do you have any comment on that? I have practiced kriya for a little over 2 years I believe.

Hi Ryan, glad I found your explanation of Kriya Yoga technique. But here’s the problem as I see it. For me, being only a mere mortal, when you say the energy is going up or the energy is going down or any where. You have forgotten a very important thing. For a beginner, the technique is to VISUALIZE the energy...as it looks to be that you are demonstrating. I feel that you should not blur the difference between the reality of a seasoned practitioner actually feeling this phenomenon in the body as opposed to directing the energy with the imagination. Can you prove that the energy is going up or down? In any case you don’t offer any reference. In finding this RU-vid I was looking for someone to demonstrate the technique which you have aptly done. For example, it would be better if you could give me some signpost that I could tell if the energy was actually moving as you suggest. But to just offer your say-so and if it works or not is nowhere, man. Lastly, it took you until minute marker 2:00 to finally state that a person (such as myself) should try the technique and decide for themselves whether it “resonates” with them. Just prior to that at the intro of this video you suggested that this technique would be a hard one and I suggest you listen to yourself and review your own narrative. Run it by somebody who is neutral and see how they comment.! Just think about it, this is a wonderful way for people to realize the gods self within. If God wants people to discover this why would he make it difficult to find or to practice. I think some of your comments over mentalized and then you regained your sensibilities and went back to the spiritual assertions that people will be drawn to the True (Sat) spiritual technique when their unfoldment reaches the level where Soul is drawn to it! Review what Yogananda’s Sat Gurus taught to him. Sri Lahiri and Sri Yuketeshwar. In my humble opinion forgive me for being critical but I just listen to the words coming out of your mouth and it sounded a little too slick at some points. I just want the technique in its unvarnished form so that I can see for myself. Nothing wrong with that eh? Thanks

Yep the closed mouth technique is basically ujayii pranayama as taught in the Krishmanacharya hatha lineages ( Ashtanga & Iyengar & Vini hatha practices etc). I also use the closed mouth, with throat constriction. Just cool to see so many others connecting with the light. Om

Hi Ryan, Firstly thank you for your videos. I do not have direct access to Kryia yoga teachers so you are my go-to ressource to learn proper techniques. Secondly I have recently, out of curiosity, read Ennio Nimis book about Kryia techniques and I am left quite baffled by all the very precise exercises.. I am sure you are aware of that book and I would love your opinion about it. Do you practice all these exercises? Thanks in advance 🙂
