Dick Dale created and performed this song as a tribute to Los Angeles Radio Station KRLA. The idea was suggested by Station Manager Bob Moore, who had heard that Dick had created a song for another station.
KRLA began as a top 40 radio station in September 1959 and during the 1960's included legendary DJ's including Dave Hull, Johnny Hayes, Bob Eubanks, Casey Kasem, Jimmy O'Neill, Emperor Bob Hudson, Charlie O'Donnell and Dick Biondi.
In the 1970's, KRLA under program director Art Laboe adopted an oldies format, calling the station Hit Radio 11.
In the mid-1980's, with program director Mike Wagner, the station featured a lineup that included Charlie Tuna, Johnny Hayes, The Real Don Steele, Humble Harve, Art Laboe, Huggy Boy and Wolfman Jack.
