Dick McDonald mentioned in his final interview before his death (available on Amazon Prime) that he purchased a large portion of shares in the McDonald’s corporation shortly after selling out, and that he made “a lot of money” from this in the years since. Also, this movie is inaccurate about the royalties: Dick and Mack actually gave Kroc a choice - either he gave them $1m both up front, OR he agreed to a perpetual 0.5% royalty deal (half of what they ask for in the movie). It was difficult for Kroc, but he was able to sum up the $2m to buy them out to avoid the royalty deal. Don’t be fooled by the movie - in real life the McDonald brothers benefitted well from Kroc's success. They weren’t fools. The only travesty was that Kroc erased them from the history of McDonald's, claiming himself to be the founder. It was only after his death in the 80s that Dick and Mack were re-recognised as the true founders. PS. For the record, if a handshake deal is witnessed in the presence of attorneys, and a written follow-up made, it is just as legally binding as a signed contract. So assuming the handshake deal was even real, Kroc would not have been able to renege on it. Hence why he had to buy them out to avoid a perpetual royalty deal.

Was Ray Kroc really that brutal of a business man? Or did the McDonald brothers just enrage him to that point that he felt the need to go around them? All the while he was expanding the brand of McDonald's, they were along with him for the ride but they refused to give him any room to help the franchisees (and therefore the brothers) make more money. What would the story of McDonald's be had the brothers listened to Ray about menu advertisements? About instant milkshake mix and cutting out the freezer costs? The thing is that Kroc took the McDonald brothers ideas and made it nation and eventually a worldwide success. In real life, the brothers made a lot of money, but what Kroc did was essentially as one of the comments said seem like he was the founder. It wasn't until after Kroc died that the corporation actually acknowledged the brothers as the founders.

And they very well could've bought the IPO of McDonalds with those checks and be billionaires today with $50m per year in dividend income. But they didn't because they never had the ability to see the big picture. The truth is, the McDonald brothers got exactly the amount of worth they brought to the table and it's probably more than they ever would have got if Ray never entered the picture.

@@amunra4015 false. Kroc wasn't nice guy. He stole their 1% just because he was a narcissist. In the movie they all knew the brothers didn't have money, so couldn't afford a good lawyer. He took advantage of them. He also tried to oppose a minimum wage bill, and supported Nixon. But he was a drunk, and heart failure caught up to him... and cheated on his wife . Karma?? And I love how his wife gave tons of money away to causes like NPR (that Trump supporters hate). Oh, and he originally didn't want McDonald's and urban areas so people wouldn't break into the stores... In other words of course people with less money, generally people of color. Oh yeah and sure, make the food cheap to eat, give you obesity but that's ok.

Thats $7.8 billion dollars. Annual dividend is $5.52 which means they'd get $178 million per year in dividends today. So yeah, the only way its false is that i UNDERESTIMATED, the dividend income.
@kbanghart

@@amunra4015 my comment about it being false is that I disagree with what you said about their amount of worth. In the movie, and I'm going just on that for now because I haven't done any other research, but in the movie Kroc offers them a blank check of sorts, asks them what they will take. He then agrees verbally to 1%. Of course, in the meeting with the lawyers, he says no, and all parties knew (discussed earlier) that the brothers don't have the $ to fight. Now, IRL *if* Kroc said hey, invest it, and in fact I've heard they did invest some, great. But the fact remains that he went back on his word. Plus, I'm also taking into account the fact that he cheated and left his wife for someone else who was also married. These combined factors put him pretty low in my view. However, I love the fact that after he died, his wife gave away the tons of money to different causes, one of them npr.

Misusing negative labels to stereotype someone is a classic tactic of a bigot. 2) Oppose minimum wage bill. (Any source of evidence?) Classic socialist / communist anti cooperate dog whistling. 3) Using your personal hatred of Nixon to smear Kroc by association. Wow. 6) Cheating on his wife. You imply he's an evil person for cheating, but know NOTHING of the circumstances. Classic labeling and bigotry. Strangely dog-whistling to the religious crowd here? 7) Gleefully rejoicing in his money being donated to the NPR, without even knowing if Kroc supported it or not. 8) Wild attack at Trump supporters for some reason. The truth of the matter was that both McDonald brothers were happy with the money they got and had no regrets. The Hollywood take on this scene would have you believe they were less than thrilled with what was going on. Needless to say, the actual meeting was probably much more agreeable and Kroc was met with more smiles than frowns.

Well done movie. You go through a bevy of emotions towards Keatons performance. He did a phenomenal job and deserves more accolades.

I can’t stand how this film portrays these characters. Ray Kroc was a businessman and his means of doing better business was being constantly shafted by the holders of his contract. I get pride in your product, but Ray was brought in to franchise their model and make a profit. NOBODY as far as main characters in this film walked away from their businesses with anything short of $1 million. The brothers received $1.35 million a piece, and mind you that the film doesn’t mention that Kroc and Sonneborn had to raise that capital to pay off the brothers. He did not have it readily available on hand. The brothers wound up selling an idea and made a massive profit from it ($1.3 million is about $10,800,000 if you adjust for inflation). Not many people with a good business idea can say that. Plus they were considerably older. Richard McDonald was 52 when he sold. Maurice was 59. They could afford an early retirement. What a terrible businessman Kroc was to put two older working men into a cushy retirement that most of us could only dream of affording. And at exactly their asking price! They OFFERED HIM their company for $2.6 million in 1961. They got what they wanted! And as for the “handshake deal” that the brothers took with Kroc? I have no idea whether or not that deal was ever realistically a condition of the buyout. But either way, Ray says it best. He has shareholders to contend to. And shareholders can break a handshake offer based on what THEY want. Being a successful businessman does not make one inherently evil.

In reality, both brothers were actually happy about the sale. They were not guys who had big expectations of franchising and expanding the operation. That was Ray Kroc. If not for him, McDonalds probably would have just remained a small mom and pop operation that both brothers would have worked until retirement. Instead, they became millionaires. There is also no evidence about the 1% outside of a nephew of the two brothers. It's a borderline myth.

I am officially retired as of September 2023. I am serving as a City Commissioner in our town of Alachua, and serving on the board of directors of our local Ronald McDonald House in Gainesville. I don't know if you have seen this podcast episode, but it was fun to do it. It is the first time that I have discussed these stories publicly, as I always felt it would be a distraction to my business. No such worries in retirement.
