_You're strong! It will be good to have that strength!_ DoW made me fall in love with these weird birds. So glad to see them fully realized after all these years.
I think a plastic Great Knarloc is too risky for GW because they don't quite know how many people want to play Kroot. So this box serves as a way to gauge demand for further development.
If this release goes well enough, I can see forgeworld reissuing the greater knarlocs and knarloc riders. I do wish they would've made them in plastic though.
Fun fact, I think there was actually a Chapter Approved army list for the Kroot in the early 2000s. It featured cool stuff such as Kroot riding medium-sized lizards, winged Kroot, super-mutated Kroot, and could all be led by a winged Master Shaper wielding an eviscerator and who also happened to be a minor psyker. The whole army could also gain various stat bonuses, depending on which race they had been most heavily feeding upon. Of course, as was the case with Chapter Approved lists back then, you had to convert all of this yourself. Those were the days.
I ran a list like this. Was so much fun. Me and my friends were really young players at the time and they hated all the special rules the kroot got as they were used to them just being chaff. Was a good time. Ordering custom bits form GW was a huge pain so getting vulture wings to make winged kroot never came to fruition. You could mountkroot to the old hound kit relatively easy to make riders though. Also, their elite kroot squad was just carnivores posed differently. Armor was handled by the shapers deep strike and eviscerator hit. I put a melta gun on another shaper as they could also have looted weapons. I miss that level of customization that WH used to have.
Kroot Mercenaries used to be their own army back in 3rd Edition with Andy Hoare's 2002 Kroot Mercenaries army list from White Dwarf 266 (UK), 4 months after the Tau as an army itself had made its debut as per White Dwarf 262 (UK). In fact, the Kroot were actually, originally, conceived as an independent army unrelated to the Tau first for that matter, as elaborated on in the Tau designers' notes article of the debut White Dwarf issue, and hence the Kroot Mercenaries army list was a nod to that later on. This was all far prior to Forge World's own resin Kroot release during 4th Edition in 2005 as per Imperial Armour 3: The Taros Campaign, and moreover, Forge World's Knarloc Riders were just the successors of the original Tracker Kindred. No mention of the original Kroot Mercenaries army list made me sad since the Vulture Kindred themselves were an interesting unit, and the Kroot Mercenaries army wide special rules were also quite fun such as the Signature Evolutionary Adaptations and Hyperactive Nymune Organ Adaption. Kroot Mercenaries army list was also available to download on GW website as per Chapter Approved live rules system back then in free PDF format, and it was also published again in Chapter Approved 2003 and Chapter Approved 2004 during 3rd Edition, and the Kroot Mercenaries conversion showcases were widely featured in Citadel Miniatures Collectors' Guides. And also Anghkor Prok himself had his own PDF Chapter Approved unit profile as an HQ choice special character available to download on the GW website to go alongside his own 2001 Games Day exclusive pewter miniature.
Those vulture kroot were super handy, caught alot of people off guard. Can't forget the 20 kroot and 20 Hounds in a single squad, haha 300ish points for an absolute tarpit of a unit
I don't mind the Kroot not having weapons that can take down Knights or Russes. It makes for a fluffy, in-game mechanic that helps further explain why they still hang out with the T'au.
It's in flavour to have a contingent of Kroot and a pair of borrowed tanks. Or with a bit of kit-bashing you could have a pair of kroot piloting a Stormsurge.
Important note, you can stack a trap well laid twice in a phase from a war shaper for -2 ap across the army. Farstalker really like this against their bounty targets
It’s incredible! I adore his Sproot. 😂 Such impressive talent. Every time one was teased, you could guarantee he’d have a sproot version the very same day. An unsung hero for sure and I’m glad I’m not the only one who sings his praises.
Tbh I was a bit disappointed to see that GW, while claiming the Hunt Pack box was just the half of minis they had in stock for kroots had only the lone spear and hounds left to show. We want more auxiliaries!
On the war shaper using “Join the hunt” - my thought was, since attacks are resolved one-by-one, technically there’ll be a point where the whole Kroot Carnivore squad gets destroyed as the 20th Kroot is killed, but before any damage starts going to the shapers. War shaper can use “join the hunt” at this point, putting the squad of 20 Kroot that’s just been destroyed into reserves - at the point when the 20th Kroot is killed, the war shaper is still on the board and part of the squad, so is still able to target them
War shaper free stratagem has to target its unit though, that means either the attached unit or the lone war shaper. This never lets you get a free use of join the hunt on the the 20 kroot as it is the bodyguard unit that would be the target of the stratagem, not the attached unit.
@@epiktrojan311 wrong - the unit and the shaper only split AFTER the killing attack is completed. Meaning you can interrupt after the death of the last kroot, but before the spillover damage into the Shaper. Only caveat is the rare case when there is no spill over damage - as now there isnt an INTERUPT window.
These guys supported by stealth suits, ghost keels, shadow sun, any number of Tau artillery, with some fire warriors in a transport for some flexible firepower and you have the ultimate stealth CQC shoot army.
Kroot are one of those armies that's like an AoS faction: most people are gonna be luke warm on them, but the few people who like them are gonna be insanely passionate I'm one of the latter. Bring on the KROOT
@@HighEffortUsername I was really hoping the upcoming rumored kill team with the swooping hawks would have vespids opposite to them, but it seems like its probably gonna be jump pack scions.
Restricting any and all melee attacks to nothing better than ap1 (even the legends rules) so that it isn’t better with a stratagem doesn’t seem quite right, I’d rather just have a lethal or sustained hits stratagem if they’re within a certain radius of a shaper. Also two characters doesn’t seem like the second half of the box set, even if their rules are pretty good, they could have at least given us a new “centrepiece” model (even if knarlocs are out of the question) to have some sort of way of fighting vehicles. Still like the release but it could have been much better.
Lets hope sales are good enough to make them rethink releasing the Knarlocs again. Maybe made to order? I'm going to kitbash some aos Carnosaurs, Stegadons or Bastiladons alt Skyrays and Aggradons as Tetras. Angkor Prok can count as shadowsun.
Krootox Rampagers and Lone Spears imo seem like despite the points price they may be auto include for Kroot heavy lists alongside carnivores and farstalkers
I would say that involving Tau transports and vehicle variants like the Devilfish can still be a dedicated kroot army. Kroot still have to use transport after all. You could even paint up a devilfish to be more krooty
These models are awesome, and I'm glad they're getting a release. That said, as a custodes player, it's honestly insulting that tau got a release of more kits than Custodes have unique plastic kits in their entire range and we only got a single character that should have been a datasheet loadout addition.
I actually like the fact that they have no dedicated anti-tank weapons. from experience the worst enemy of tough units like primarch and knights is volume and if you field 2000 pts of raw kroot thats what you will have. if you wanna add some sort of anti tank my suggestion wuld something like melta bombs (similar to GSC) and give dem rampagers a carnifex like ability with mortal wounds on charge impact
Against infantry heavy armies or factions that heavily rely on infantry to secure points (ie Gaunts and warriors performing actions for Nids), Kroot would be an absolute nightmare to face. Especially in lower point games, like 1k or 1.5k. 2k and above might be a different story, since the Kroot don't seem to benefit much from vehicles and heavy armor...they kinda give the vibe of Drukhari with better durability potential and less speed
Kroot owe Tau their existence thats why they fight for them, and they have advanced tech because they devoured billions of orks that have innate tech knowledge built in to them from absorbing their genetics, they actually cant share their tech because even they dont know how it works, the Tau only developed their own from reverse engineering kroot tech... cmon dude thats all in the wiki. The kroot are not serfs to the Tau empire but will answer the call of the greater good when requested to.
the thing I think that would of made this range really sing would of been to include a unit similar to the orks hunta/kill rig. One version is a transport mainly while the other one could still transport say 10 kroot but has a large hunting cannon. Do feel however the lack of any sort of anti-tank is a big issue. Even a simple specialist unit of ambushers that use the atlatl that the lone spear uses (a real world spear throwing tool) that could of had similar blasting tip javelins, a unit of 5 with infiltrate and scout would of been a big help.
it would eventually be very cool if the Kroot eventually gained a big monster type unit like maybe one of them got a taste for carnifexes or squiggoths and just started getting bigger than your average krootox
I got a rules question that fits well for this video. So, for the Kroot Farstalkers, it ahs 2 separate stat lines which makes sense since there are 2 hounds there. But how does that work? Like, I would assume you roll separately for the hounds and the kroot, but how are you supposed to keep unit cohesion with 2 models having a higher move speed? I just never saw anything about how that entire thing works
give me the KROOT MAN. dude this would be insane next to a few broadsides with 60 inch guns next to there ambushing and frontline defence with a few fire warriors to provide more firepower with a few breachers and devilfish to continue the ruthlessness of the forward pressure. im just saying it would be INSANE
Cheers for this! IDC about competitive, and both my family and friends are a lot more interested in narrative/fun than meta. So stuff like this is always welcome. Heres hoping we get big birb knarloc 😭🙏
Hello, Auspex, I know that your content is mostly at least about Warhammer, but would you mind if you cover Halo Flashpoint? Today your announcement has already come out with the contents of the boxes and a little about how it would be played and I would like you to cover this game since a friend may be interested in it as he is a super fan of Halo
I think the Lone Spear needs its wounds upping for 110pt (I know the points aren't set in stone yet) or needs its point dropping Lone Op isn't that much of a game changer
SO how did the tau get the kroot to join the empire? THEY RE-KROOTED them!? I really hope/wish they add a little more to the kroot and yes I'm sad no Knarloc/GREAT KNARLOC?! I also like the idea of running them with maybe a unit of steelwing and then like strong anit armor from tau suits. LIke maybe something like Ghostkeels, riptides or even hammerhead? I'm thinking of trying like 500pts of like big mechs really liking the idea of Riptide and Ghostkeel.
They are still lacking a lot of firepower. I was hoping that as detachment rule they will get something like AP 1 to theirs weapons or something in that manner. Currently you can't play them as Kroot army. I wish they were something like sub factions, that you get access to their abilities if you spend X points on them. It would be great for example that you could play them along other detachment if you use 50% points on Kroots.
For the most part, I think o like what Kroot have got. My biggest complaint is, definitely, their lack of anti-armor, and/or anti-large, and I really did hope for their Greater Knarloc, but I have a reason I'm good with this; I DON'T want Krot to get their own book. It would have been nice for Kroot to get even more stuff, but I fear that would have been at the risk of making them effectively standalone within their own codex, and then people would push for them to get their own codex, which THEY DON'T NEED. I was actually rather happy when the Votann got their own book, but I might've been just as happy if they had been added as another flavor of Guard; a neat way to add more variety to how they play, and what tech they can bring to the field. More factions can be nice, but I also frequently feel like they weren't necessary, or didn't get enough extra stuff to really justify it. How many World Eaters models are there? Do they really need four separate detachments, instead of one of tbe seven CSM will already get? Do we REALLY need a whole Emperor's Children Slaanesh book? Does Deathwatch really include enough of their own flavor, or the benefits of drawing from the beliefs of multiple Chapters, to need their own codex? I'll miss that Kroot missed out on a few things, but I'll be glad they can stay firmly nested within their book, and not branch out like Knights, AND THEN Chaos Knights, or like some people feel Dark Mechanicum needs to. My feelings wouldn't be hurt by them needing some Tau support; they are Tau support. They aren't quite Koronus Expanse Kroot, concealing from the Tau a this time that they already had warp-capable World Craft, so I'm fine with them remaining firmly a part of, instead of struggling to be alone. That's me, though.
I feel like Pathfinders can do a lot to support Kroots: rather independent, same 7" Scouts move, each can guide two Kroot units while providing Ignore Cover with Markerlight, partially provide the needed anti-tank fire with rail rifles, can either Infiltrate and add extra shots against light infantry or stay safe behind Kroot lines with the pulse accel drone (the anti-charge one isn't needed with the massive Kroot screening), and adding Darkstrider to one can make the backfield safer and the anti-tank fire more reliable. I mean, lack of dedicated Strats in the Kroot detach aside, this honestly feels pretty synergic
@@zacdalsanto3511I don't see nor I remember seeing any pre or post-codex exemption for Auxiliary units beside specific Strats so they definitely can. And to be fair I'd say it would have been bottom-tier bad design anyway to have the main army rule (namely the one that carries over between detachments) to be discriminatory even just to niche units
The whole kroot and tau together thing still feels kind of stupid after all these years. But these models look so great I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t agree
Must people play games for fun not tournaments. Old games of Titanicus was never better than you kill the final unit and he blows up and takes out yours.
