When this arrived in the theaters, I was a teenager who had just gotten into the original AD&D and would spend many hours a week with my friends on some adventurous quest. For us, 3 of the movies we would see over and over were Excalibur, Krull, and Dragonslayer (we even appreciated Bakshi's LOTR and the Rankin/Bass The Hobbit). For D&D kids, those were the closest thing we had to seeing our joy on the big screen (you can just imagine how we lost our minds over Jackson's LOTR). For a teenager of that time who loved fantasy books and D&D, seeing Krull and Dragonslayer on the big screen was about as good as it gets. I love seeing Verin Sedai (Emily) react to and appreciate my nostalgia. Thank you for reacting to this.

This movie is the sole reason why video games have thrown weapons called "Glaive". It was originally slated to be a Dungeons & Dragons movie, but something went wrong with the rights, so they modded it to have sci-fi elements. With old movies getting sequels, we can't rule out Krull 2 anymore. I'd love to see how the world of Krull would be portrayed nowadays.

I completely forgot how much this movie has going for it - British adventure movies from the early 80s really had some fun from an imagination standpoint - if Time Bandits is not on the list it needs to be :) They clearly spent exponentially more money on effects/sets/costumes than cast, but it wound up being a pretty good cast.

First off great reaction as always! This is one of my all time favorite movies (I have the two issue Marvel Comics adaptation). I just love everything about this movie. The music score, the effects, the fight scenes, the humor, the lore. All the actors play their roles with gusto. This movie had a profound affect on me as a kid....I mean you get sci-fi, fantasy, action, adventure, magic and even to an extent swashbuckling. I loved the look on Colwyn's face in the swamp battle when he realizes that the "prisoners" are all still there with him and that offering them freedom and acceptance was the right choice. Fun and great reaction as always. Many blessings to you and yours.

I grew up watching this. It was one of my mom and my favorite movies. My mom's favorite character was always Rhun (Robbie Coltrane's character). I preferred Rell (the cyclops) though. The fact that he knows he is to die, but rejects the vision of his death knowing that his end would be far worse (i.e. getting crushed) is probably the most heroic thing in the movie, at least in my opinion. About the lasers, the Slayers don't fire lasers. Yes there is the glowing light, but if you pay attention to their weapons they're actually firing a projectile. They fire an energized spike from the base of their weapon. What's more they are only capable of firing a single shot before using the other end as a melee weapon. Just because something glows doesn't mean its a laser. The Beast does fire energy blasts in his confrontation with Colwyn, but I'm not sure they're actually lasers.

This film has had a place in my heart for a long time. It's weird. You can say that Star Wars is objectively a better movie than, say, Tron, The Black Hole, or Krull. Yet (and I know this is blasphemy), I would far sooner watch one of those three films than Star Wars nowadays. Yes, this was a Star Wars rip-off, it was a mishmash of fantasy tropes, but the damn thing WORKS. Having Freddie Jones, Francesca Annis, Liam Neeson, and Robbie Coltrane in the cast doesn't hurt. It's beautiful to look at, and it moves along nicely. My favorite parts are the Widow of the Web sequence. Freddie Jones and Francesca Annis outshone all the other actors in this. Then there's the Fire Mare scene. I LOVED it, and I still LOVE it. The fact that it's obviously green-screened doesn't matter in the least; if anything, it makes it better. I feel like a kid again watching it. "Mommy? I want a fire mare for Christmas!" And of course, James Horner's score is unbelievable. We lost this guy far too soon. All in all, it's a movie that I can love, flaws and all.

I still love Krull! The biggest issue I find is that (particularly considering the budget) the world seems empty. We have less ther an one hundred people in the entire movie- and that's both sides! I'd love to see Peter Jackson do a version with huge armies of men and slayers clashing as the king and his band try to slay the Beast before all is lost.

@justinplayfair4638

Lysette Anthony was completely dubbed by Lindsay Crouse. Don't know why, as Anthony has a beautiful voice... There was a lot of rewriting of the script during and after production...The Beast wasn't originally from outer space for example, but was another resident of the planet. They also lost one of the planned "quests"...there was originally a scene where a Medusa-like Snake Woman was encountered, but it was cut. All of Ergo's transformations were hand animated, this was still years away from the first use of "morphing" in Willow. Sadly, no toys were made for the film...there was a pretty kick-ass Parker ros. board game with figures of Colwyn and The Beast. Most merchandising consisted of things like actvity books for kids. The novelisation y Alan Dean Foster was cool ecause it gave some ackground for the world of Krull. According to him, Krull had once been a world of high science, but somehow collapsed into of feudal world of mysticism. It was intriguing but I don't know if Foster came up with this or if it was actual worldbuilding from the screenwriters. The scenes between Ynyr and The Widow certainly hint of a very different past from Krull's present... Krull always fun to watch...it's not a favorite ut I'm always happy to see it. Matt, ya gotta show Emily DRAGONSLAYER!!!

They also made 2 video games of Krull - an arcade version and a 2600 home port both made by Atari, both were popular at the time...

Yep, I remember playing the arcade game. I was much better at Tron.

This is my childhood! Me and my best friend at the time used to watch this movie all the time! It's such a treat to see it once again. Phew, almost getting emotional.

One of my fav 80' s science/fantasy films. IDK if you watched 1981 Dragonslayer with Peter MacNicol, if not watch that. IMO it STILL has THE best dragon effects ever.

The original script was called The Dragons of Krull. They decided the dragons were too expensive and replaced them with horses. I'd love to see you react to The Sword and the Sorcerer or Hawk the Slayer.

Saw this in the theater during its original release… You hit exactly on my thought when watching this review….it was that the tv commercials advertised the weapon heavily and then it was so minor in the actual movie.

I watched this when I was 13 or so, I remember it as a mixture between Dune, the Lord of the Rings and the Princess Bride 😸 In fact there are two actors from the original Dune, Freddie Jones, who played Thufir Hawat, and Francesca Annis, who played Lady Jessica. If I recall it correctly, this film was produced by De Laurentiis productions, as Dune was. I'm commenting at the first 12 minutes, but I'm sure I'll like it all as always 👍😸

For the Star Trek DS9 fans, Commander Eddington in the lead role. Classic schlocky fantasy of the 80's

My siblings and I watched this so many times when we were kids that we wore out the VHS tape we bootlegged from HBO. The soundtrack is easily the best thing about this movie, though it is very reminiscent of Horner's other films from the time (in particular, some parts really remind me of Star Trek III). Also, if you listen to the soundtrack recording, you can hear some mistakes (for example, the brass section is a bit of a mess at the beginning of the 'Ride of the Firemares' track), so maybe they didn't spend a whole lot of time perfecting the performance before moving on to the next scene.

Another very underrated fantasy movie from this period is "Hawk the Slayer". It has the best depiction of a classic elf IMHO ever in movies. Plus, it's just an hour and a half of B-movie goodness! I highly recommend it.
