Zimmerman exemplifies his extraordinary and perhaps unique delicacy of touch in this performance...his ability to nuance almost defies belief. Magnificent. I much prefer this piano version (Brahms own) from the String Sextet Op.18, to the original.
Just as inspirational and exquisite as the original piano trio, Op. 18. Clearly, Brahms could and did write some of the most beautiful melodies around. (As for 'abstract'music, je is one of the three greatest composers ever!)
Zimerman wasn't happy with the quality of the piano sound on the recordings of Brahms he made with DG - none have been released on DG...one hopes he will change his mind one day.
