KSP: How I design/build SSTOs (ft. 208-seat Eeloo SSTO) 

Yeeeaah glad there are still some ksp youtubers left u r one of my favorites

This is one of the things that KSP really excels at: rapid iteration of design. With this, it is possible to do trial and error for our designs and it makes building really fun. You'll always be like, "what if I do that? will doing this have any effect?" etc. Of course it's frustrating at times, but still fun and satisfying esp if you are able to achieve what you want. I can only imagine how Matt felt when his design finally worked. Oh and yeah, this is really really helpful for players(like me) attempting to build SSTOs. For example, I learned in Matt's videos to add whiplash engines to my SSTOs to help it gain some speed in the lower atmosphere. It proved to be really helpful.

How I make SSTOs 1: Make a plane 2: Slap a crap ton of engines on it 3: Put more fuel tanks on it 4: Make it look cool Also, can you please make a tutorial on how to land sstos because I cannot land anything on Kerbin or not

I honestly enjoyed mark thrimm's ssto programme. He also posted like an excel sheet that has lots of maths on how to ssto. And this guy goes like nah screw maths. More boosters more fuel. More fuel, more fuel, crash? Add more boosters and more fuel. Keep up the videos man

Nice. I've owned ksp for years but still never made a plane yet. Went through several games and restarts. I'm at the stage where I can go almost anywhere I want and back with Eve being 1 of the most obvious exceptions. I see your videos and want to try space planes but haven't got the balls yet. I still enjoy watching you build yours

Looks more impressive than my SSTO. Those are just clipper-style heavy lifters. One of them even made it to the Mun on one tank of fuel.

The nosecones on the Rapiers aren't a cheat, they're just... creative aerospikification to increase efficiency.

Don't forget to check the flight characteristics when its fuel tanks are empty and the CoM moves forward.

imagine this SSTO had a 360-degree sphere cockpit with hexagonal screens that transmit external surroundings via exterior cameras, that would be heckin' awesome.

You should build some SSTOs using mk2 and mk3 expansion, you'd absolutely love those mods!

I'm not very good at trial and error or math! XD But I've got a few good LKO SSTOs. My real problem there is I pick designs which are hard to modify to add more fuel & stuff. With the SSTO in this video, small fuel tanks can be clipped with the wings, the whole thing can be lengthened, etc. With my favourite designs, the ~wings~ lifting surfaces are too much a part of the whole style to make either of those changes. Having said that, in one of my designs the engines are on pods on the wing-tips and I really should add fuel to those pods; changing structural fuselages into tanks. It's just that doing it properly means replacing 4 of the 6 wings. Oh hang on, now I've removed the carefully flush-fitted solar panels, that wouldn't be so bad. Hmm! But I also just made an ugly bug which won't look any worse no matter how I modify it. XD That one has 4400m/s after the rapiers have used all of the rather plentiful supply of oxidizer, and mining kit too.

Maths who needs it ;P Nice How To-ish video. I struggle with my SSTO plane designs, although thinking on things I think it is due to not having enough non-atmosphere engines on my designs. Well not enough engines and too much fuel. After a number of iterations I tend to get a little frustrated and then start strapping on some boosters, or just toss a large rocket behind it(or in front of it) and the plane becomes a payload. My latest design I did not have enough engines or fuel on it by far and quickly became a payload. I then proceeded to take it to the Mun and going why do I have wings on this thing for flying around the Mun and Minmus they don't have an atmosphere to use the wings in and proceeded to remove the wings on the next iteration.

Head of management: Despite the 3 major failures of missions, we arent losing much money! I'd imagine we can do whatever we want and I have an ambitious idea! The ambitious idea: 0:23

If only I had the time to do this. I did make an accidental SSTO once. It was an SLS replica, with a mammoth which got into orbit without any staging. Whoops.

@Matt You can get better performance by angling your wings up slightly. KSP lift surfaces require AoA to generate lift, but you want you level and prograde indicators to be aligned to benefit from drag occlusion. So you angle your wings a few degrees as here. Notice the large payload I'm carrying with very little wing surface. This equates to less weight and drag, meaning fewer engines, meaning even less weight and drag, fewer intakes. How do you know that the center of lift is well balanced with the center of mass without using these tools in the building editor? Just a good feeling and experience I guess ?

I noticed you don't use autostruts much, is there any reason? Also really cool of you to add the other videos in the description, you're a good dude.

From my experience if you don't put the engines in the middle of the craft, when empty of fuel it's impossible to fly cause the Com shifts all the way back, at least for such big crafts.

turns out its super duper simple in the current version of the game, just make a fat ass rocket and blast it off, i strapped together a bunch of 5 meter tanks with 97 of the new f1 like engine and was able to get it to the mun in a single stage

You mentioned that you put nose cones on the back of the RAPIER engines, (IE: Rapierspikes) I thought that particular aero-drag 'hack' got patched out?

You really need to make a series sorta like interstellar quest

In my experience, the sweet spot is have one RAPIER for, at max 15 tons of craft. Majes huge SSTOS very difficult to build. To a point that I wonder a vertical taking off SSTO wouldn't be better, ditch the RAPIERs for rocket engines. I guess the X-33 Valkyrie concept was not that bad, shame they didn't resolve the problem of the fuel tanks.

I have no idea what I did but aftwe 1 hour of failed attempts at trying to build and fly, ever ssto I ever built after that moment worked. Every damn one. Like wings misplaced? It can land on mun. To much thrust? Could still not spin out

Yay thx Also should I add more wing to my Dragon minmus cargo SSTO (It goes to minmus and refuels and then has about 5k deltaV, I use the stock deltaV calculator, also why are you using mechjeb for deltaV readout when 1.6 has it or is this old footage?) Edit I realized I forgot the issue, it nearly hits the ground when it falls of the runway, same with moonlight but last time I edited that it made its deltaV go from 5k to 3k so I added a refueler to it...
