I have the ktm duke 690.....thanks for this video. Dealership charged me $200 for my first 600 mile service. smh. But now I'm doing it myself and saving so much money!
You mean 'Left-hand side' for oil drain plug, not right hand side (always from direction while sitting on the bike) but thank you for taking the time for this great video. People like you help so many people :) Like me.
Huh, much easier than the older KTM 640 LC-4 design. The screens and filters look the same as on the newer KTM 350/500s...just twice as many! Thanks for posting. JB
Thanks a million for this! If I may, just a couple of questions: should I be replacing the o-rings for the oil filters when I change them out? Should I be replacing the o-rings on the oil screens each time I clean them? And should I be replacing the seal ring on the drain plug with each oil change?
I'm glad the video helped you. As for your question I did not replace those rings because they seemed in good condition. I do replace the rings at about every 5 oil changes. Hope this helps. Cheers
Howdy Docman, Great vid, I'll be changing the oil on my 2012 for the first time in a few weeks, Previous owner said it takes a few hours? Heh, not sure why exactly. Question - You open and seal each drain plug / filter / screen, individually and seal individually, was this to illustrate each step? Anyreason why I can't just open / drain / clean screens / add new filters all at the same time? I would wait for the initial drain of oil to happen first so it doesnt just burst at the seams. Any reason why thats a bad idea? More opportunity for debris to enter I suppose.
Very helpful video mate! But I have a question.. how much oil have i to put inside? I’ve read 1.700 ml.. I putted 1.7 but I can’t watch the oil from the oil screen.. have I to put extra oil until I could watch it from the screen on the right side?
I just bought a 2019 KTM SMC R 690 a couple days ago. The dealership told me it was going to be around $500 for the first service at 620 miles. That seems a little steep, compared to all the other bikes I've had. Tell me, do you do your own valve checks? If so, how often do you recommend doing it?
zandr19 Thank you for your comment. I did not do my own valves on this model. But the good news with these ones is that they only need to be done around 12 500 miles (20,000 kms). But all the rest ai did myself which Dave’s tons of cash. 😉
Hey Doc, super Video! How often do you need to make maintenance on the 690 R? I am thinking about to buy one myself, but i am scared that i would have to do maintenance every 15h...
Hello, the maintenance on the 690r is really good. Valve clearance check every 10000km and oil change every 5000km. If you use it a lot off road then the oil changes can be more frequent if it is dusty like every 2500km. And of course you get yourself a good off road air filter that you can oil. That's it. It's not a maintenance monster. Hope this helps. Cheers
I used a torque wrench for year working on vehicles, for me it's experience but just be sure to never over tighten because that can cause really bad issues. Cheers
Hey mate, I was looking at taking my 690 in for a service. It's at about 5000km now but, could you just give me a list of stuff that they would do for a full service and see if I can do it by myself? thanks dude
At 5000km its basically and oil and filter change and your regular maintenance as per the owners manual. At 10000km is the more aggressive maintenance like valves adjustments. At this point I recommend checking torques, adjusting and checking chain components and then twist the throttle and have fun. :)
How do you know how many pounds to tighten the bolts? Is it in the manual? And how much maintenance does this bike need compared to a 2016 wr250? thanks.
Yes, you will find all the torques for the bolts in the owners manual. I would say they are pretty much the same except that you will need a valve clearance check on the 690 at 10000km and the Yamaha at 250000 km or something like that.
Michael Irschick Yes, in most cases. If you only drive street and light trails your good with 8000 to 10000 Kms intervals. But I was riding competition and extreme conditions so my oil would break down much faster due to ruff usage. ;)
Also. I'm having problems with my oil pressure light? I just got a brand new 2016 and the oil light keeps coming on. AND my brake light is out too. Just got pulled over on my vacation 5 days after getting the bike. It's a little frustrating
Brand new 2016? That's a first that I hear of such misfortune. You must have a bad switch or connection somewhere. Bring the bike right back to the dealer while under warranty.
hey doc why do you use kerosene? and is there a oil you recommend? also my bike likes to stall here and there for no apparent reason then my battery dies alot also where ill have to use a jump box any sugestions or ideas why
+jacob verble Hi Jacob!! I use the Kerosene for cleaning the screens only, it helps dissolve the old oil quickly. The oil I recommend is the 300V from Motul. As for the stalling of you bike, it seems to be an electrical issue, maybe a charging problem if your battery is always dead. I would have a look there first. Hope this helps. Cheers
+yishai nissanian Hello yishai, If you use you motorcycle in normal road conditions you change your oil at about every 5000 km. If you race it in dusty conditions I would change it every 2000 km. Cheers
Hi Jared, those are piston ring pliers, I broke the tip off that set a while back so I modified them to do just that lol. They come with different tips, you should be able to get those at any auto shop.
Jared Knowlton they’re called circlip or snap ring pliers , Auto zone has them for around $10 , with various types of interchangeable heads for different applications.
***** have you had yours remapped? the guy i bought it from put a slip on fmf pipe on it but never had it remapped. thinking about buying the evo vented air box lid and taking it to get it remapped.
