People say it disturbs the rifle less when you do that. It makes sense. You have less contact with the rifle therefore a steadier shot.

A US special forces guy said the same thing about the thumb position.

It's kind of interesting. The replies given so far are things I've read before, however, I've also read and seen videos that take the opposite position. For example one long range trainer responded to a YT video where the guy proposed using only light fingertips on the pistol grip along with the thumb on the right side. The trainer disagreed and said the pistol grip hand should be pulling the rifle back into the shoulder firmly. Another YT video explored the thumb left and thumb right and found that he shot tighter groups in the more common thumb left position. Then, yet another opinion where the PRS shooter really didn't know why PRS shooters were shooting with the thumb right, but opined that with a pistol grip it is much faster to operate the bolt with the thumb on the right. @@rickoshea8138 The SMLE mad minute doesn't apply here as it is an unsupported speed drill and here we're really focusing on what produces the best group, or hit in the case of IMPACT SHOOTING's hunting video, from a supported position. In this video, it's a one shot scenario. If we accept the premise of "do whatever works for you" then why do we bother to project thumb right as a better way to shoot? Todd's videos suggests thumb left for pistol grip on semi-autos and thumb right on pistol grip bolt guns. It raises the question, why not just use the same grip for both bolt and semi?

@@rickoshea8138 I found the link to be very interesting! It just doesn't have anything to do with thumb right/thumb left in supported precision shooting. The thumb right technique seems to be the new kid on the street, I'm wondering why? Surely someone somewhere knows where, how, and why this originated. A father watched his daughter cook a roast. He noticed she cut it in half before she put it in the pot. He asked why she did that. The daughter said that's the way her mother did it. So they asked the mother/wife why she did it that way. She said because that's the way her mother did it. So they called the mother/grandmother and asked her why she did that. She said I had to, my pot was too small to get the whole thing in. I just want to be sure that's not what's going on here :)
