Kue Lapis Legit, The Cake With 20 Layers | Ollella

Forget instant cake mixes, we’re going back to the basics with Kue Lapis Legit! This cake from Indonesia takes 6 hours to bake. Also, it’s pronounced ‘Legeet’ and not legit as in legitimate, though with the rich buttery flavours in all 20 layers of this cake, you can’t help but say that this cake is indeed, “legit.”
Marcella continues to bake these cakes the way her grandmother used to but often adds a little twist to tradition with her salted egg flavour and nutella flavour creations.

@@pussup2635 Building up the layers is labor intensive that you have time it based on estimation not to mention the cake is cooking stationary thus you cannot leave it while baking compared in its German rolled version where the cake is constantly rolling while baking ensuring more manageable heat distribution

As an Asian living in Australia, I remember in my childhood of the times where my mum would make these cakes at home, when she had free time. I remember her cutting them up in rectangles, and me preparing to take a slice or two for Recess the next day. I would then take out there beautifully tasty cakes to eat, and most of my friends would sometimes be wondering what it was! They usually saw me as ‘The Kid who brought unique food’, because i would have also brought at some point, Serabi, Bika Ambon, Pandan Chiffon Cake, green pancakes with coconut filling, Konnyaku, Martabak and many more! But Kueh Lapis would always stick with me. Probably because I love the smell of spices and cinnamon it gives off, plus it’s a great comfort food to me. It also seemed to be the most go-to for birthday cakes whenever we had family friend gatherings 😆

Spekkoek (kue lapis legit or spekuk in Indonesian) is a type of Indonesian layer cake. It was developed during colonial times in the Dutch East Indies. The firm-textured cake is an Indo (Dutch-Indonesian) version of the European multi-layered spit cake. However it is not baked on a rotating spit, and contains a mix of Indonesian spices, such as cardamom, cinnamon, clove, mace and anise. The cake is made of flour and yolk and is rich in butter or margarine.
