@@雪恵-n6k Broadway is technically a place in the US, and to play in a Broadway musical you have to play in one of the theatres in that district. So no, she wasn't a Broadway singer at that time, she was a cast member in a musical tho. Even Miss Saigon London wasn't considered a Broadway musical in 1989, it was considered as the "West End" version, and that's basically the London version of Broadway. Miss Saigon hit Broadway in 1991. Her part in Annie tho? It's just a Filipino version of a Broadway musical.
@@biglawturbo6703 Alrighty then you better come with it with your lovely political correctness sis. 😁👍 P.S. Honestly weather or not she was considered a Broadway star at the time of this footage, it really does not matter in the long run. Lady Salonga was always bound to be a major star and singlehandedly take over the stage herself, period. 👑💖
Unsurprising that this young child would turn into a beautiful woman with such a powerful voice. This 9 year old guest would become a Disney Princess, a broadway performer, a mother, and a wife. How inspiring.
if you listen to this and then her 5 year old daughter singing, I'm sure you would agree her daughter is at the same level as her at age 9 . everyone is saying how terrible her daughter is but shes FIVE. I'm pretty sure her daughter inherited a lot of her talent
I am lucky that I was able to watch the Little Orphan Annie at the Cultural Center of the Philippines during my childhood. Lea in this video is very different from her actual live performance in this broadway musical. That was the start I started to follow her career. She was amazing in that musical show and I wish that someone can post even short clip of her live performance of the musical show where she acted and danced while singing with high notes. Lea Salonga is Lea Salonga.
OMG LEA! Cannot believe this was 30 years ago. Kuh was right about Lea. Lea fulfilled hers. She is a legend. Inangat niya ang Pilipino sa bansa dahil sa success niya sa Broadway. Idol kita Lea. Bata ka pa lang alam mong may ibubuga!!
The know-it-alls who compare Lea's singing with those on The Voice Kids...uh, Lea sang like a child, her role was that of a child. Fast forward to today, kids listen to and model their singing after "divas" who belt grown-up, not-age-appropriate songs.
nobody is putting anybody down or demeaning one to glorify the other. Its a very valid observation considering theirs are of different era.Adding expletives wont make your comment more valid.
already amazing way back then. :) At her age she can hit the right note already plus it was not that easy because it was bossa nova version. Thumbs up to you, Lea
Just my opinion .. peace 😊❤
Can you imagine if 9 yr old Ms Lea was singing so naturally like a child at this age and then grew up up to be one of the legends in broadway, what can Esang achieve?
I find it comforting that she grew into her talent aswell. This was still good, it just wasn't professional at 9. But who is? There was a lot of hard stuff in that tho. The confidence and stage presence was all there!
Actually, it was my father who was an avid fan of Lea Salonga. At a young age, he keeps on telling me about this popular singer who's a few years older than I am. That's how I come to know her and her songs. When she became so famous during her Miss Saigon performances, her success made me feel so proud as a Filipino. That's when I became her avid fan, too. Thanks for sharing this retro-vid....
I just remember those good ol' days where a venue has an audience of a thousand people and only fifteen people are applauding. Ahhh...love those days!!!
When I sang "All By Myself" in my aunt's house I was also in the same moment when Kuh sang "Tonight" .. that part speaks to me! Am I the only one who noticed Kuh's speaking voice is like an American? Ang galeng!
I'm happy to hear this very raw voice of hers. Yes, kids nowadays do sound better, but this was a different era. Kids of today have it easier. They're so used to contests and doing videoke. Their parents encourage them because, honestly, they help put food on the table. Maybe they sound better, but the question is are they using their vocal cords correctly? Maybe when they become teenagers, they will lose their good voices, especially the guys, 'cause puberty, you know. (Darren Espanto is an exception.). I remember this girl who auditioned on TVK, I won't say her name (which I also don't really remember). She was already singing on TV before, started out as the littlest competitor in a singing competition (I won't say which). Of course, people loved her. She was so tiny with a high voice. She got older and was not seen in the limelight for a long time until probably when she auditioned for TVK. So she did but the "magic" was not there anymore. She had a hard time hitting the high notes, which she would have hit if she got the right training in the years that followed the first competition. She was obviously singing for Lea,, but the latter didn't turn around. Even I wouldn't. It was obvious that she struggled. She was so disappointed that she cried. She probably even felt a bit humiliated by the experience. She didn't expect the outcome. Just saying that it doesn't matter if Lea did not sound like the way kids sound these days. What mattered were the years in-between, from then till now. Lea got better and better through proper training, in fact, she even gets better as time goes by. She's now one of the best singers in the world. What matters is how you get to your destination.
my mum always told me how she was criticized at a young age for her voice and look at her now. shes really worked so hard to perfect her craft. i cant imagine the hours of work to mold and polish her voice into what it is now. just thinking about the amount of training...wah
Sa dami ng singing contests at sa dami ng nagiging ''champions'' bihira na nakakaalala just a few weeks after winning. The peoples memories and a champions shelf life has become drastically short that only a few exceptional ones linger.Gone are the days when being a grand champion is your ticket to fame, now lineage counts more than talent.
Kuh Ledesma is still actively singing amd performing on her 40th year. She had a Valentine show at Dusit Hotel last Feb 2019 and a birthday concert at MOA Arena last March 16.
Which Lea really has.
How such a unsurprising that this 9 years old girl will became a successful woman with such a powerful and angelic voice , a disney legend,a theater legend and became the first and only kim of miss Saigon...
Seeing this made me realize how great The Voice of the Philippines kids are. I mean, Lea's voice at 9 is nowhere near that of those kids in the blind auditions of TVKP, save maybe for one or two. It exemplifies how proper training can have someone with potential become one of the best in her craft. Look at Lea now!
I think that she was struggling with a different arrangement here compared to her singing the original version. I have never liked children singing like they are Beyonce or Mariah. It might show how skilled they are but it also shows that they are not original in approach and are just copycats.
lol. my point is lea is not even better than the children she is judging now. If at that age she will audition for the voice, no one will turn around. Yes, dummy.
If i have a child blessed with a beautuful voice, i will let her grow her voice like young lea here, not force her to belt or imitate other adult singers so she can benefit from it when she grows up. I will let her sing how a 9,12,15,18 and so on can sing based on her voice quality
Can you imagine the people who were sitting in the crowd thinking she was mediocre. Then years later they sit down in a theater to watch Aladdin and a whole new world comes on..
Me too epep kasi nagsabi na ganyan daw boses ni lea nung 9 years old sya hahaha infernes may hawig nga haha confident lang si lea kesa sa anak nya hahaha
If Lea is 9year old today im sure she will sing better than TVKP because she can watch alot of music videos in internet and will sing along with karaoke everyday like TVKP doing now. TVKP are products of internet music while 80s singers relied on minus 1 cassette tapes. kung si lyca ipinanganak noong 80s baka "Bahay Kubo" lng ang kaya nyang kantahin mas malala baka "ABC" nga lng. kc wala xang pambili ng piano o khit anong musical instrument.for me pareho silang magaling sa ka age nila. So iba ung 2014 sa 80s dre ha isipisip rin pag may time bago mag comment
s you tube lng may mga voice tutorial n libre p... in short, masuerte mga bata nayun kc lahat ng resources, information and tutorial ay isang click lng s keyboard. so its not fair to compare
The days when few bulky coloured light bulbs are used to lighten up stage shows compare to thousands of programmable tiny colourful LED's today . Life was so simple then, no smart phones, no internet
