Click to Subscribe: goo.gl/LrhE4n 💕❄️✨ How to call the Northern Lights with #kulning - the Scandinavian Herding Call technique from Disney's Frozen and what inspired the plot for Frozen 2 bit.ly/Frost2NRK
In the link above you can read about how I introduced kulning to Disney in 2013 and how I got the part as Norwegian Queen Iduna in Frozen 2
I guess I can now introduce myself as the Norwegian Herd Caller who inspired Disney to write a plot around a siren in Frozen 2. I did the kulning in the original Frozen and when I finally met the songwriters they told me they wish they'd have me do my kulning on Let It Go, but unfortunately it was too late at that point as the film was printed. Happy to know my kulning inspired Disney to write a story where calls from the North has a more prevalent role in Frozen 2 and that the songwriters chose to write music inspired by #kulning. What a story to tell my potential future grandchildren, that the singing I learned and developed from calling GOATS in the Norwegian mountains one day would inspire one of the biggest franchises in the world to write a story around that singing! 💕❄️✨Most singers take fancy educations, but my first audience were a bunch of goats, so you must understand how cool this is for me. (and yes, I finally took fancy educations as a composer, but it all started with a bunch of goats that I also bribed with food 😉)
The Norwegian pop singer AURORA got the honor of singing the calls in the sequel and she's the younger Queen Iduna. A fun twist to the story is that I got to voice the Norwegian adult Queen Iduna in the Norwegian Frozen 2. You can hear it here: bit.ly/38eCtUs The song I'm singing is about a magical river that sings - another fun coincidence is that 3 years ago I wrote a call while standing in a magical river in Northern Norway..... You can see and hear it here: bit.ly/2MG66qa it's called Calling the Aurora and I'm calling the Northern Lights, not the artist 😜
Read more about kulning here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kulning
LISTEN to Calling The Aurora on Spotify: bit.ly/SpotifyChristineHals
With Northern Light photographer Ole Salomonsen "Frozen" - vocalist Christine set out to call and catch the northern lights in -15C or -5F it was pretty cold to be standing in a river for almost 2 hours, but what won't you do for art?
Christine is using her herding call technique kulning which is what she used in the movie Frozen to call the snow, this melody is to call the northern lights, or Aurora Borealis.

Oh, europe still be using their magic. Glad to know, we're doin the same here in Indonesia. But, we call the rain when the sun's basking too long for months. We're also calling the fishes in the ocean when we need it. Believe in magic, because it does truly happen... I thought european have forgotten their nature and culture.... Happy to know, there are some people still connected...

Wow! Thank you for sharing this knowledge with me. I am so fascinated by other cultures, especially ancient or indigenous traditions that are connected with nature. I too believe strongly in magic. This night I just knew the lights would appear, despite a low likelihood based on the weather forecast. But I trusted the skies, because in a way I felt that they called me first. 💕❄️✨

It's we Americans who've lost in. Some of us feel it, but don't know what to do. The ways of our ancestors from Europe were lost along the generations. Sometimes I look up and want to sing to the stars, or to the ocean, but know that I can't, so I hum softly. It simply feels good, but likely does nothing more than fulfills something that feels like it needs to be done. I've added a scene like this into my sci fi/fantasy novel.

Thank you so much for sharing this with me Kellin. I am happy you were moved by it. 💕❄️✨ It is a singing technique I hold very dear to my heart and it's something I learned while herding goats as a child before I even knew I had talent for singing. My neighbors heard me sing for the goats and asked me if I shouldn't become a singer, but I wanted to be a veterinarian. This technique is very much inspired by the very rugged Norwegian landscapes with hight mountains and deep fjords and people needed it to not only call and protect their animals, but also to communicate with each other across far distances.

Thank you! I did the kulning in the original Frozen which I believe is what inspired Disney to write the script for Frozen 2. The songwriters told me back then that they wished they'd have kulning in Let It Go, but they had already released the song when I met them. And this time around I wasn't asked, but I still feel honored to have a movie inspired by my calls. I was asked to be the adult Queen Iduna in the Norwegian Frost 2, so it's some how full circle and I happen to sing about a magical river. The song I'm singing in Frost 2 is called I elven finnes alt - and is the Norwegian version of All Is Found

Thank you for sharing this with me! I am so sorry it took so long for me to respond. I've had a tough year, but things are getting better now. I am sorry to hear about your anxiety and depersonalization episode. I hope you are feeling better. Nature and music have always been my best medicine to any heart ache, worry or anxiety. Our world is very chaotic with a lot of external demands on people and it's very easy to lose touch with yourself, nature and what really matters. I aim to post more videos of the beautiful Scandinavian nature and I'll post music that goes with it. It means a lot to me that you found solace in my work and I hope I can continue to bring you that 💕❄️✨ Warm hugs from Norway

Thank you for this beautiful wisdom Boddhi 💕❄️✨ I love the way you see my work. Nature is my main source of inspiration and I believe we hold the whole world, future and past within us - so my calls, just like any other music or piece of art, can very well bring up memories and I hope they also can somehow connect us to the future. We are creating the future and the past every breath we take.

I discovered kulning almost 2 years ago, and got sucked in to its beauty. I drew inspiration from it to be part of the culture of a small group within one of the alien races in the novel I'm writing. It's ethereal nature fits this group perfectly, and one of the primary characters is part of that group. She knows the songs, and at one point, sings one. I have all northern European blood (Irish, Scottish, English, German, Dutch), but no Norwegian. I have no idea why this method of singing calls to me so much.

Thank you for your beautiful comment 💕❄️✨ We weren't really sure the northern lights would come out that night, but my intuition told me they would. After 1,5 hours we were ready to give up. It was getting very painful to stand in the water for such a long time and I was confused that the northern lights never came. As if they knew we were about to give up they appeared in their full splendor. So it is so beautiful that you notice that they were discretely watching the whole time before they finally decided to start dancing. And yes, you are right - those are shooting stars.✨💫 I make a wish every time I see one - in real life and even in videos 😊💕❄️✨

Thank you for the kind comment Ivy! 💕❄️✨ In a crazy way I feel the lights appeared because I made the sacrifice. Before I went the northern lights cast wasn't very promising, but I had this very strong feeling in my heart that they would appear. It was a long drive both for me and the photographer and it was in the middle of the night and -15 degrees, so it was freezing. But somehow I just know, and trusted that the lights would appear if I just got into the river. However, after almost 2 hours it started getting painful and we had just decided to go home as the lights suddenly appeared. It was as if they had only tested us. And now they were here, and I forgot about the screaming pain in my fingers and started moving for the camera. And that's probably where my frostbite attacked. I was at the breaking point. When I got out of the water I was shaking uncontrollably for hours. I am editing the Behind the Scenes video which I will post on my channel in April. Then you can see some of our process if you like. Have a lovely weekend! 😊

It brings to my memory a verse of the "Rigveda" (I, 113, 17), the sacred book of ancient India: "With the chain of his voice, the offering singer gives rise to the glowing dawns" (my tentative translation). That is, it is not the singer who sings when dawn rises, but dawn which rises when the singer sings. But here we are not dealing with sun's dawn, but with the northern lights, and this is stunning. Thank you one more time for sharing this beauty.

Christine - What I love about this video, other than the beautiful lights and music and your otherworldly voice - is how it proves we can (minus a month of numb fingers) really interact with our natural world rather than hold it at arm's length... we can be reminded that we are a part of nature, that we are a part of Creation's magic and can participate in it... I love that you were in the river. I love that the Aurora came out for you. It's magical perfection and thank you for lighting up my soul with this and sharing such a beautiful part of your world and culture.
@ChristineHals

Wow! Thank you so much Andrea! I'm so happy you actually see it from that angle, because nature is so important to me. I find it strange that not everyone enjoys and cherishes nature and its miracle, but I think the way we live today we lose touch with it with all the stress and technology. I believe that by connecting with nature, you're somehow connecting to divinity and your inner truth. So that is why I like scoring images of nature, because I hope to awaken that spirit of nature in others somehow 💕❄️✨ And yes, I strongly believe they came out for me. It wasn't very high chances that they'd come that night, but I got a strong sense that they would and that's why I lasted so long in that river. After almost 2 hours of freezing I was however about to give up and a little bit disappointed. The photographer who is an experienced Northern Light photographer suggested we pack up and go home, but right after he said it the lights appeared. So we gathered our will power to last a little longer and took pictures and filmed as long as they appeared. It felt like magic and as if nature wanted to see if we were serious about it, and then we got rewarded at the end.

Dear Nellie, my apologies for taking so long to reply to your beautiful, heart warming comment. I found it deserved an equally dedicated answer. 💕❄️✨ Than you so much for all the kind words. I've always loved nature and to be in it and draw inspiration from it is the best thing I know. I believe it was the northern lights that called me and not the other way around. Ever since I was a child. I had this big, black horse who was my best friend and I would lay on his back and watch the northern lights dance on the sky above us. I still remember it to this day, even if it's 25 years ago. And I believe that the majestic nature around me filled me up with all this beauty and I needed to find a way of expressing that. I always loved painting and I'd paint nature and take pictures. But as soon as I realized I could express myself through music I knew that would for me be the ultimate way of sharing those feelings I had while out in nature. And this particular night I had a feeling there'd be northern lights and my friend Ole had talked about how we should take this picture. So we gave it a chance. The weather forecast gave a 50% chance so we couldn't really know, but it was as if the lights were calling me and I knew they'd show up. After almost 2 hours of freezing and calling the lights I was a little disappointed in the lights and my own intuition. How could I have felt so strongly that they'd appear? And as we were about to leave, they showed up. It was as if they tested our faith and dedication. I do think it was worth it. I remember thinking about my fingers and how I now would have to be extra careful with cold days - which I do love - and it scared me. I also worried if I wasn't gonna be able to play piano if my fingers had no sensitivity. But I thought what we did was unique and I had a feeling it would be part of something bigger. I don't know what yet, but I am very grateful that people like the video this much. 💕❄️✨ I stood in the water because it was more beautiful and unusual than standing in the snow. I've never seen anyone stand in a river midwinters like that. I also like the reflections. It was my friend Ole's idea that I'd do it and I thought it was a good idea for a picture. Thank you so much for your beautiful comment. I will soon post a behind the scenes video for this. I hope you will like it! 💕❄️✨

This woman is incredibly talented and she's clearly got a lot of what the Finns call sisu. People used to be freaked out by my husband sitting on his porch in hospital pants in this sort of weather...I think that they would be even more impressed if he started kulning.
@ChristineHals
@ChristineHals 5 лет назад
Hi Sarah, Thank you for the kind words and for letting me know of this totally AWESOME word! Wow! I love it so much I think I need to make a song called Sisu and share some of my stories! ☺️❄️💕❄️ All my life I have done things I've been terrified of. My father is a northern Norwegian farmer and demolition man (we have some Finnish in us too) and I learned to drive the tractor at 15 and to cut and crush concrete walls at 18. Sometimes I'd be core drilling through thick concrete walls up on 5 meter tall scaffolds - that was pretty scary and very hard and dangerous labour. After that few things scare me and I feel the word sisu describes a part of me enabling me to endure a lot of tough challenges. Your husband seems awesome and definitely has sisu! 💪🏼👊🏼 😊

@@ChristineHals He did. He also worked in construction, and helped build the ski lifts over in Whistler, B.C, among other things and he was a fairly good guitarist. His daughter has taken up the guitar and sings in the Church and school choirs but she doesn't really project as well as she should (though she can make her voice heard when she wants to and stands out because she's the tallest in her class and the only redhead) and she hopes to see the Northern Lights someday. I myself have seen them about 5 times including once when I was sitting in my living room watching Deadpool...I paused the movie for a good 15 minutes and sat on the balcony. Unfortunately my daughter was at Grandma and Grampas and they had put her to bed an hour earlier than that and because of the glare from the street below I could not take a good picture of it.

Wow! He sounds like a good man! 💕❄️✨ I never get tired of seeing the Northern Lights. There's so much beauty in nature. I'm sure her voice will develop as she grows. And even if it doesn't carry, she might still have a unique expression and way of telling stories with it. I think half of the secret is just having something to express. I wish her the best in her musical endeavors. Music sure brings happiness, both to the singer and the listeners.

Thank you so much for this beautiful comment, it truly warmed my heart. 💕❄️✨ I think my singing teacher would've been very mad at me had he known I was doing this to my voice. I cannot recommend it to anyone to stand in a river midwinters to sing for almost 2 hours. Your body stiffens up so that you don't use your singing muscles the right way and the raw and cold air is not at all kind to your vocal cords. It was still an adventure though, very refreshing and also fascinating to see how far I could push my body against the natures forces. It felt as if I became nature by standing there and the lights appeared just as me and the photographer were about to leave as if they wanted to reward us for enduring such a long time in the cold.

Thank you for sharing your story Lady Grey.💕❄️✨ Where in the world did you grow up? The mere fact that you waded in that water for almost two hours and didn't DIE is a miracle itself. Even those polar bear club guys only jump in for a few seconds. You're lucky you still have your limbs and digits.
@ChristineHals
@ChristineHals 3 года назад
Hi Rebecca! 💕❄️✨ YES! 😊 I was very lucky. I was shaking uncontrollably for hours afterwards and my fingers lost sensation for a whole month after. But while in the water I somehow got numb to the cold, although the colder I got the more it hurt, so I'd warm my hands in my armpit as that's supposedly one of the warmest places on your body. And whenever the camera was rolling I was driven by adrenaline to be able to move. I could make a new, more planned video, sync it with the music (that I wrote after shooting this video) and have a heating bus next to the shoot, but it wouldn't be "the real deal". Few can or want to copy this crazy stunt 😝

Thank you Dannii, I'm so happy you like it! 💕❄️✨ Maybe it is something very human and primal about that way of singing? That's so cool about the Alaskan Eskimos - in Northern Norway we're actually told NOT to whistle to the lights or they will come and get us. We are also not to wave something white at them and the indigenous people of Norway, the Sami, don't ever joik the lights because they don't want the lights to know they are there as they see it as a bad omen. The Vikings loved the lights and saw them as reflections of Valkyries shields in fight. I thought I could hear the lights as a child and I just googled myths right now and apparently the Sami people call them "the lights you can hear" or "the audible lights", so perhaps I did hear them after all! Thank you for sharing this with me and inspiring me to find out more about the lights history and myths around them 💕❄️✨

I had promised the photographer that I was NOT going out of the water until the northern lights had appeared. And I also had a very strong feeling that they'd come. I knew that IF I went out of the water, it would be very difficult for me to go out there again. It was very dark in the water and a lot of stones I could trip on, and it took a lot of time just to get to where I was standing in the river. I also knew that this was not something I'd want to do again because it was so crazy cold ❄️ and when there's a full moon and chances of northern lights and a lot of snow ❄️- you just make the best out of it. Luckily the photographer Ole Salomonsen is just as passionate as I am, because he was in the water with me most of the time.

Northern Norway has a special place in my heart. And I feel so proud that Disney found inspiration to write the script for Frozen II based on the herding calls my grandma taught me when I was a child(this is what I sang in Frozen I). Balsfjord used to be Norway's biggest county for goat milk, so it was a strong tradition that is now sadly almost gone. I love the Sámi and I have some Sámi blood in me, but unfortunately did not grow up with that tradition. I dream of learning to joik one day and I am happy Disney tried to pay tribute to the Sámi as well. Thank you so much for your kind words💕❄️✨ we truly come from a beautiful corner of the world!
