Well... Totally harmless isn't exactly the right expression. Cheetahs are still wild and they aren't pets. But as Neal said, they are not agressive cats and those people know what they're doing. (to those who are interested about cheetahs I recommend the channel "Dolph C. Volker" (I think that's how it's called). It's by someone who works at a cheetah sanctuary.)

The cheetah will become despondent and depressed if the dog dies or they become separated otherwise and attempts to introduce another dog companion haven't been successful. I have no citations for this, but over the last few years I've read into it a few times. I bet wikipedia has some decent info with citations.

Bears, Cheetahs, rare exotics, even lion/tigers and elephants are often sold illegally and have been for so long that they now usually come from breeder stock. The major problems with this are that the animals are rapidly becoming genetically bottlenecked because their is no regulation so breeders who are doing this purely for money will continue to breed generation after generation all related to the original breeding pair so these animals can't be used in any conservation efforts. The other issue is that most intelligent people buy into the 'you can't tame a wild animal' which is partially true although there are far more cases where the animal never becomes aggressive and violent then otherwise. The people left buying these animals are usually stupid and extremely poor. A very bad combo for raising an animal such as a cheetah for example. Most of the cases you hear of 'exotic animals gone wild' are about stupid people with no resources, no training and no plan with what they're going to do with the animals. Famous examples like the chimp who ate the woman (she regularly gave the chimp xanex and wine and had absolutely no safety measures in place) or a tiger which was found in a public housing complex in New York after mauling it's owner. It's owner lived on welfare in taxpayer paid housing yet somehow managed to acquire a tiger and kept it until it was over 200 pounds and he couldn't afford to feed it. (which is why it mauled him, it hadn't been properly fed in weeks when they did the autopsy.) If endangered animals were brought into a process of domestication that was done properly by trained and well resourced people we could save many species who will probably soon be extinct unfortunately people still believe 'you can't change a wild animal' even while it was done with wolves by our ancestors who had no understanding of genes and was recently done in russia to foxes in as few as 13 generations.
