Kumseok Jung was a semi-finalist in the 2024 UBC Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. Kumseok presented their research, "Whose data is private? When is it private? And How do we make it private?" They hope to revolutionize privacy management in IoT systems by providing developers with an efficient and error-free framework for implementing privacy controls.
Modern Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, like "smart cameras," can collect rich data and perform various tasks, such as in retail settings where they capture people's identities and actions for purposes like theft prevention or operational analytics. Managing privacy in such systems is complex due to varying data usage and legal and ethical challenges. Engineering privacy-respecting IoT systems requires specific controls, often inefficiently done by developers. Kumseok's research focuses on designing a software framework to streamline and ensure accurate privacy control implementation in IoT systems.
Kumseok Jung is pursuing their PhD in Computer Engineering in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering under the supervision of Dr. Karthik Pattabiraman and Dr. Sathish Gopalakrishnan.
#3MT is an academic competition that assists current graduate students with fostering effective presentation and communication skills.
