Steven Chow. A true master of his trade. The story telling, the plot devices, the stunts, the wire work all masterfully executed. Kung-Fu Hustle is a perfect action comedy. Leung Siu-lung delivers a compelling performance as the Beast. The film would not have been the same without this legendary actor. It is my understanding that there were aspects of his character that he didn't like. Glad he had the patience and the wisdom to follow direction. The subplot of the Beast and the Star-Crossed Lovers is the hook that makes this film more than a silly comedy and elevates the film into the highest art. This movie never gets old. It is always funny. It is always exciting. And it always leaves you feeling edified.

The actor who played the Beast, Bruce Leung, was a famous martial art actor in the mid 70s to early 80s in Hong Kong. He was not as fortunate as Jacky Chan or Bruce Lee and retired to business after early 80s. Stephen Chow invited him to come out of retirement for this movie. However Leung in an interview mentioned that he was a bit upset that some mannerism in the movie is a bit humiliating ( like picking nose or ears ).
@TehTrueGamah
@TehTrueGamah 2 года назад
I definitely don't think he got the recognition he may have deserved. But Stephen Chow picked him to be in a comedic/martial arts film and I think he did so because he knew of his prestige but wanted to bring him back at the same time if that makes sense. I love Stephen Chow's movies and the actors he chooses because of their knowledge of martial arts and their ability to act with satire in their roles. (not disagreeing with you in anyway)

Beast and Sing are yin and yang. Both are martial artists who lost faith in the world. One after achieving immense power, the other after experiencing immense weakness. Sing is thrashed by Beast’s “power”, waking up his own inner potential, but the difference is Sing’s weakness allows him to see the bigger picture and show Beast mercy. Beast understands the lesson and is brought to his knees and Sing becomes his “master”, coming full circle and now the weakest is teaching the strongest about humility and inner peace. Such strong storyline woven into this whimsical film ❤

What I find so fascinating about the final battle is when the Beast starts utilizing the Toad Style. It's like, up until this point, he's used zero actual moves, just punches and kicks. He never had to do anything else, since he is just that ridiculously strong and fast. Why pull out techniques when just brute strength wins the fight for him? Throughout the entire fight scene that Stephen Chow has directed, I feel that the entire conflict between The Beast and Sing is all about taming a wild animal. The Beast is basically a Wolf while Sing is the Tamer. Instead of killing the wolf,Sing tries to tame its violent aggressive behavior and shows him that the wolf can still be in peace with the tamer and by teaching him about peace and harmony.

Stephen Chow. Wow, not only acted in this movie but produced it. What a genius. Saw this movie years ago and have to come to conclusion that the writing/story makes this movie the greatest Kung Fu movie of all time. Has humor, romance, action, subtle subconscious 'Foreshadowing' throughout movie. The Subplot of the true nature of one's inner self which is the Buddhist quality of compassion and knowing one's true self when found. That's the inner journey...getting to know one's true Inner Self. That's a great subplot. Because of its originality, special affects, cinematography, acting, customs and sets...it is the top Kung Fu movie of all time. It doesn't kill us with Special Affects because the writing, acting, plot twists, etc, stand on their own.

He said "I lost" because he always thought defeating others is what makes him stronger - that's his objective right from the start when he escaped from jail - to find a worthy opponent to beat. When the landlady couple almost beat him at the casino, he cheated and stabbed them both in the stomachs with the spikes. That's his worldview - defeating others is everything. In the final fight, Ah Sing almost crushed him with the Buddhist Palm from outer space, but he was forgiven him for the first time. Then he tried to stab Ah Sing with the spike but Ah Sing blew a hole in the building inches away from his face - that's the second time he was forgiven. When he asks Ah Sing what move that was, Ah Sing offers to teach him - that's him being forgiven for the third time. Ah Sing is offering to teach him the Buddhist Palm of kindness, forgiveness, and mercy. That's when he learned that defeating other doesn't make you strong. Kindness is what makes you strong - which is the central tenet in Buddhism (hence the Buddhist Palm move which the whole story is revolved around). That's when he realized that he lost because he's been wrong all his life.
