Kung Fu NES Secrets and History | Generation Gap Gaming - I want you to think of your top 5 NES launch titles you had when you were a kid? Of course you’d immediately name classics like Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, or Excitebike, but I’d be willing to bet that Kung Fu made your list too because I can’t think of a single person I knew that had an NES growing up that didn’t own this game. Kung Fu is one of the true pioneers of the beat em up genre. The story behind its development and inclusion in the NES library is quite compelling and I can’t wait to share all the secrets and history you need to become a Kung Fu NES master. Let’s get started. #KungFu #NES #Nintendo #RetroForce

My oldest sister who passed away this yr, bought this game for me when I was about 11 yrs old. Just hearing you explaining this and watching you playing it makes me want to pull my NES out of my closet! Lol! I grew up on Nintendo! So this game along with Mega Man, Double Dragon, Ninja Gaiden, Contra, Super Mario Brothers, and Tecmo Bowl games will always have a special place in my heart! 👍

Those symbols you spoke of, they are Chinese numbers. 一 二 三 四 五 六 Starting at the top going down are the numbers one through six.

GenerationGapGaming you’re welcome. I only noticed this after learning a little bit f Japanese then playing this game and realized what they were. It’s kind of neat to understand what those characters are. In ninja gaiden, when you collect the items that give you weapon usage, the character there is: 忍 It’s the first part of the word ninja or shinobi. I never understood what they were when I was a kid.

I was about to post this, then saw this comment! Here are the readings in Japanese: 一 (ichi) 二 (ni) 三 (san) 四 (yon) sometimes "shi", but since "shi" also means "death" people avoid it 五 (go) 六 (roku), the one emphasized at 5:51

Just stumbled on your channel. I have a 6 year old I share in my love of retro and he loves it all. I want to push my kid towards retro because of the fear of microtransactions in modern gaming. Very well done and produced video.

Kung Fu is the first NES game I ever played. My friend brought it over back in 1986 to a house we were having a sleep over at. Pro wrestling was another one that was probably another of my 5 first ever nes games I played.

Kung Fu was definitely in my library of NES games. As soon as it came out on the NES, I had to have. I use to play the Kung Fu Master arcade version at the corner bar few houses next to mine. It was my favorite arcade game around 1984 or 1985. But when they made for the NES I had to have it. This and the Legend of Zelda were my favorite.

Kung Fu was the first game we purchased for our NES the day we bought our console. Outside of the Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt cartridge that came with it of course. Still have it in my collection. A true classic.

I played this in the late 90's on nestical seeing how many times I could beat it in a row, using save states. I think I got up to around 9. I never knew about the Silvia attacking you at the time, it was just fun to see how far I could go. I also never saw her do anything different

I remember this game more fondly in the arcade, it was really hard and I rarely got past the 2nd stage with how hard the snake pit was (two hits and you were dead). still, a really fun game back in the mid 80s.

Cool tips and great job on the history of KM. One extra tip is to leave one knife throwing guy behind you and keep walking foreward. No enemies will pop up in front of you and just before reaching the 6th pillar, beat the knife thrower and kill the end-boss. Works great on the original arcade version (I actually own 😎)

I remember kung-fu growing up as a kid! my uncle had the NES and I just fell in love with the system... that game and most all of the 'black box' lineup I just loved it all! To this day I'm not super good at the game though, lol the 4th floor with the flying things gets me every time! I did play a rom of the Japanese sequel, seemed to be mostly the same game just new levels, music enemies and graphics! kinda fun I do recommend checking it out if you liked the first game.

I've gotten on this kick where I'm buying old gaming systems. I started with a Nintendo and the first three games I bought were; Kung Fu, Contra, Top Gun, (yeah I quetioned that one myself!) Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt. I'm hoping to get an Atari next. Needless to say it's fun playing the games that I played as a kid.

Being a home computer kid, I only played this in the arcades as Kung Fu Master, but this video really took me back even though I am kind of garbage at the game xD. Great video and presentation as always. I could never nail the knife-guy timings on the arcade, but I did enjoy it all the same. It's actually probably one of the last games I played 'for real' on an arcade machine too as up until about 2005, a local pub had one in the pool room along with a Super Space Invaders and a Double Dragon. If you fancy more Kung Fu, Kung Fu Master on the Gameboy is yet another different version of the game, and probably my favourite over the arcade mode. It's got more settings, and fun enemies like a Jason clone with a giant chainsaw. I always also thought that Green Beret/Rush'N'Attack and Ninjawarriors took this kind of game far further forward than Vigilante, which to me was just Kung Fu Master with slower gameplay, cheaper enemies but improved 16 bit graphics. Sidebar, it's sad that Kung Fu 2 never happened, but weirdly I've seen a Spartan X 2 doing the rounds for the Japanese Famicom? Is that a hack or the real deal?
