Hokianga Harbour was the departure point of legendary Māori navigator Kupe when he returned to his homeland of Hawaiki. Kupe is said to have left behind two taniwha (water spirits), which guided the safe landing of later Polynesian arrivals.

Kupe and the other hawaiians were master sailors. My friend was aboard the hoku lea voyaging canoe. He was steering at night. The master navigator Mau Paulig was asleep in the hull. Then a voice came. Mau in his sleep became aware that they were steering off course!! He heard the change in the slap of the wave upon the hull in his sleep!! Such a sense of position

I look forward to going to Hokianga soon. My tupuna were among the early settlers, there is a street named after them in Kohukohu where they settled and retired and are buried there.

Kupe left from Hokianga, where did he arrive? Some say he arrived from Hawaiki others will say Tahiti. If it’s said we originated from Tahiti we’d be speaking Tahitian but we speak a totally different dialect

Likely stopped at other Islands. The Pacific ocean is huge, but not empty. Hundreds of Islands & atolls scattered throughout. Linguistics give clues. Ie: Maui. Hawai'iki is part of Hawai'ian ancestral legend.

In the days of old Tamanuiterā, the sun, used to move through the sky at much too fast a pace for humanity to complete all their days' chores leaving long, cold nights that lasted for many hours while Tamanuiterā slept. Māui and his brothers journeyed to Tamanuiterā's sleeping pit with a large rope, which in some tellings was made from their sister Hina's hair. The brothers fashioned the rope into a noose or net, and in doing so "discovered the mode of plaiting flax into stout square-shaped ropes, (tuamaka); and the manner of plaiting flat ropes, (paharahara); and of spinning round ropes", which when Tamanuiterā awoke found himself caught in. Using a patu made from the jawbone of their grandmother, Murirangawhenua, Māui beat the sun into agreeing to slow down and give the world more time during the day. If that had not happened, McDonald´s would only be serving breakfast.

No he didnt say that - he said Kupe was credited to finding NZ whose Māori name is Aotearoa 😊 And the 2nd part was he ao he ao he Aotearoa.. and it was Kupe's wife Kuramarotiri who said that..

40 generations is a long time in ancient Maori linage for real, this is just my estimate but the average Maori life if lived to the fullest would of been on par with the average maximum age a human can live which is 120 yrs old.
