"The Kuper Island Indian Residential School', (a.k.a: "Kuper Island Indian Industrial School"), was part of the Canadian Indian residential school system. Located on Kuper Island (now known as: Penelakut Island), near Chemainus, British Columbia, the school opened in 1889 and closed in 1975. The school was operated by the Roman Catholic Church, with funding from the Department of Indian Affairs. Attendance was "mandatory", for children from the then Cowichan Indian Agency and adjacent Coast Salish Peoples. In 1896, a poll found that "107 of the 264 children who had attended the school had died". In 1922, a school inspector wrote that: “The Indians are inclined to boycott this school, on account of so many deaths.” In 1930, German doctors are alleged, to have arrived to inject large syringes into the chests of some of the children, resulting in "several deaths". In 1959, sisters Beverly and Patricia Marilyn Joseph drowned, while trying to escape the school. In 1969, the federal government of Canada took over the school and then closed it, in 1975. The school building was demolished (by the Church?), in the 1980's.
More Than 160 Unmarked Graves Found On Penelakut Tribe Territory, In B.C. - APTN & CBC National News - July 13th 2021. The Penelakut Tribe reports the confirmation of more than 160 “undocumented and unmarked graves” on its lands in the Southern Gulf Islands, adjacent to Chemainus, B.C. The Penelakut Tribe notified its neighbouring communities of the confirmation, in a letter dated July 8th, which was posted online by the Cowichan Tribes, on Monday. "We are inviting you to join us in our work, to raise awareness of the Kuper Island Industrial School and Confirmation of the 160+ undocumented and unmarked graves, in our grounds and foreshore. We understand, that many of our brothers and sisters from our neighboring communities attended the Kuper Island Industrial School”, said Chief Joan Brown, Council and Elders, in the letter. “We also recognize, with a tremendous amount of grief and loss, that too many, did not return home. It is impossible, to get over acts of genocide and human rights violations.”
