At PTUJ there is the biggest ethnological carnival in Slovenia - KURENTOVANJE.
KURENT is Slovenian traditional carnival character. He is a demon chasing away winter and calling spring into the country. This mystical character inspires powerful feelings.
Kurents outfit is consists:
EARS made of feathers
HORNS either real ones or horns made of wood or straw, wrapped in leather and decorated with colorful ribbons or flowers
FACIAL PART made of leather with holes for eyes and mouth
TEETH made of white beans on a string
TONGUE made of colorful fabric or leather
COAT of sheep skin girded about with a chain with five cowbells
red or green woolen SOCKS
HIGH BOOTS
WOODEN CLUB with a hedgehog skin on one end
Kurents outfit is called KURENTIJA.
In the past only fully grown up men were allowed to wear kurent’s outfit. Today we also have women and children kurents.
They used to visit homes in small groups in their own and neighbouring villages. Houses that were visited by kurents were believed to be lucky throughout the whole year, but if kurent rolled himself on the ground that meant bad luck.
