Born Janis Eddy Fink, a 23-year-old Janis Ian wrote one of the all time classic coming of age anthems “At Seventeen”-here it is as interpreted by Violet Grohl. #hanukkahsessions #JanisIan #VioletGrohl #AtSeventeen
Thank you both! For singing my song so beautifully, and with such heart, Violet. For fighting antisemitism, all of you. Heartfelt thanks. I can't sing any more, and this helped my journey through that devastation immensely.
That was the most moving, and honest cover of At 17, since I was that age and Janice Ian sang it on the radio. What a talent, Violet Grohl has! Real tears, here.
I absolutely believe she could record this, with a modern jazz reorg and put it out now and she will be instantly catapulted to number one! Thank you Dave for allowing us to be a part of your life and watching Violet grow up like proud aunts and uncles from afar. Just a beautifully talented young lady.
@@JesuIsTheOnlyWayToSalvation What the hell are you blathering on about...none of that actually applies to me, but nice try. Guess you don't like when other more talented people than yourself receive compliments? You enjoy your Christmas and get bent! 🙂🖕
I was about to say Janis Ian would be proud of that cover and look, SHE IS!! what a beautiful voice Violet has and what a great groove you put on this song! thank you
You know, i dont listen as much to Foo Fighters as i used to, but the Hanukka specials, i never miss them. We dont get much special stuff in our holidays, no one tells us happy new year on Rosh HaShana or happy Pesach. In school it always made me feel so alone, most i got was a mocking from my classmates because i was absent for a special holiday, that between the regular hate and words i don't want to repeat. This is special, this is unique and makes me feel like we can be seen too, a little, even if its a small holiday, its special. Thank you for giving me a reason to smile every Hanukka, thanks for bringing us some light.
Here’s an atheist against discrimination towards religions. Being pro-Jewish isn’t pro-Israel, if you want to get political. Antisemitism is bad. Everyone should have their faith or lack of it in a deity, or several.
Violet seems to be an old soul as she gets the honesty, beauty and pain of lyrics like this. Such a sweet and takented young woman, I really enjoy seeing her perform. Happy holidays all!
Beautiful, soulful voice with impeccable timing, and loved Dave's deft touch on the drums. Pianist in the interval though, needs to remember this isn't about him; his noodling was way out of step with the mood and timbre and distracted from Violet's tone. But, wow.
Ms. Ian- This song was released while I was in high school and, while I'm male, it struck a chord with me and with many of my friends. I was thrilled when At Seventeen won the Grammy that year against stiff competition, I must confess that I hadn't thought of the song in eons and, now, hearing Violet's rendition, I feel its timelessness. No song has ever captured the feeling of being an awkward teeneager as this one does. Thank you for everything you've done, from Society's Child on. Your legacy lives on! Ray
Violet has always had a stellar voice but she sounds better each time I hear her. Very talented young lady who’s voice is only getting more rich and mature. I’m so excited to see what she will do in the future.
Oh my G#d, her voice! The control, the emotion she brings to her phrasing, it’s something that can’t be taught, she has her dad’s feeling of rhythm, if you listen for it, she syncopates the beat when she feels it but never loses time. I remember hearing her sing backup at her very first show. This girl is going to make her own mark in the world, I can promise you, just watch!
I think I first heard this song when I was in 4th or 5th grade, probably through my Mom. She was in college when it came out. I immediately felt seen. I still feel seen. It's a timeless friend. An ever-reaching melody. Thank you, Janice. For your kind honesty and truth that has been a comfort to so many generations. And thank you Violet, Dave, and Greg for bringing it back in such a touching, lovely way. Love to you all and yours. Hanukkah Sameach! 🕎
I always felt this song was for me when I was in High School. Then in College, I found that none of that mattered, and I found my beautiful self inside, and the beauty shined outward. What a lovely rendition by Violet Ghrol ❤
I’m sure I’ve heard this song 100 times growing up- but not sure I listened to the lyrics until today. My mother adores Janice. With Janice not being able to sing any more- Violet gave Life to this song- she channeled Janice’s voice and soul in this. So rarely can an iconic song be be done so flawlessly like the original artist.
Go from last year's offering to this year's and you just sit there and go wow. What an incredible voice and yes, I got teary watching dad give daughter a big hug and being so proud for her!
I don't think I've ever paid attention to the lyrics till now, and gotta admit, Violet's voice and Janice's lyrics pulled a few tears from my eyes this morning
I just read Dave’s book and he talks about how when Violet was three years old, she was already zeroing in on harmonies, vocal styles and pitch. She probably gets it more from her grandmother Virginia who also sang. Dave is all raw shred and no vibrato. Violet is all about technique.
Lovely rendition of an important song. The work is just as relevant today as when the world first heard it.. More Violet Grohl, please!! Thanks for the Hannukah gifts again this year.
Between the Lines was a staple in our home when it came out. I can't imagine my childhood without it. I love that Kurstin was drawn to this song and created a beautiful rendition.
Dear Dave. I’ve told my daughters, both in their 20’s, that no father has ever been more proud of their daughters than me since they were very young for everything they accomplish. Both little and small. I hope you convey this feeling to your daughter. And and other parents who read this convey it to their children as well. You should be so proud of her.
Love this. I remember listening to this song with my dad when I was coming to age. We both loved this rendition that captured the emotion of the song perfectly.
I have really appreciated the Hannukah Sessions ‘20, ‘21, & ‘22. Don’t stop. I think your rendition of mississippi Queen on stern has been my favorite.
Violet is getting more confident and sounds better every time I see her perform. She's awesome! This was just a beautiful cover. Saving to my music playlist!
A timeless song for the ages. Thank you janis. And, thank you for the beautiful new renditions for new times. Beautifully done, violet growl. Looking forward discovering more of your music.
My mother bought Janis Ian’s album when I was 6 years old. I loved when she played At Seventeen. As a teen I snuck the album into my room and listened over and over. I so related to that girl in the song. And at 52, I am overwhelmed with the emotions I still experience from it. This cover is beautiful. Thank you 🤍
Dave! your kid is amazing! love the way you love her!!! I feel your politeness and dedication and respect... so many human lessons in this 5 min! thanks
She has such a beautiful voice that she wouldn’t need to have a famous musician for a father to make it, if it was all based on talent alone. He’ll make sure she’s noticed, though, and doesn’t get lost like so many talented people do. I wish her a huge amount of luck!
