Kurt Angle is a 14-time professional wrestling world champion, with titles collected in WWE, TNA, and Japan. He is in both the WWE and TNA/Impact Hall of Fames, a two-time NCAA Division 1 National Champion, and has also won a gold medal in freestyle wrestling at the 1996 Summer Games with, as he likes to say, ‘a broken freaking neck.’ At every stop in his career, Angle has reached the top of the mountain, and now he’s taking his Three I’s; Intensity, Intelligence, and Integrity, to the podcast world as he joins host Conrad Thompson to take a look back at some of the matches, feuds and moments that turned an Olympic gold medalist into one of the greatest sports entertainers of all time. It’s True. It’s damn true

I was in attendance that night and was stunned to hear Rey Mysterio and Trish Stratus getting booed. I remember the fans chanting "Let's go psycho!" for Mickie James during her match with Trish. In my opinion, Rey was very over at the time and, his merchandise sales proved that. I think the problem that night was a combination of Kurt also being very over and, rightfully so, and some fans rejecting the idea of Rey challenging for the title in honor of Eddie Guerrero. All of the Eddie related stuff they were doing at the time came across as exploitative and distasteful. Which was no fault of any of the talents involved. They were only doing their job which probably wasn't easy.

I was fine with Trish getting booed. I like her, always have, but by that time, her reign was beyond stale and I had been following Mickie’s career through the indies and had come to really like her. I was ready for something new and was glad to see it. Rey, on the other hand, deserved better. That was his big moment, and the crowd didn’t care, which made them come off like assholes.

@@Jeff_Pryce I agree, Trish held the belt for far too long at the time and i still believe she should've vacated when she took time off from injury in '05 even though the only diva from that roster worthy of holding the belt at the time was Victoria since most of them got released earlier, Lita was still hurt, and Christy Hemme was nowhere near ready! And honestly, i felt the only reason Mysterio won the world title and got the push was because of Eddie's passing. Vince didn't even wanted him to win the belt because he was too small, im glad Rey got a Wrestlemania Moment. But otherwise i got bored with him as World Champion right away.

Plans changed because Eddie died in November and then Batista got injured in December. They brought Angle over to Smackdown to win a battle royal for the title. Fans had turned on Cena by this point and were cheering Angle in their feud so they turned him back face. Dunno why they didn't just have Orton win the title in that battle royal and a 1 on 1 match with Rey at Wrestlemania. As usual, they overbooked things.

Because at the time the wrestlemania world title match was not finalized yet. Hell the person who won the royal rumble had not been finalized yet. Well John Cena really don't count because its expected for him to get booed. Mind you not a lot of people like superman (me being one of them) so think he's overrated and that's how he feels about John Cena. Now Rey Mysterio that was different because they were booing him despite his character at that time being based on that you can accomplish your dreams, starting at number 2 winning the royal rumble, ECW and WCW legend, he dedicated that match to Eddie, so aside from all that you would think the crowd would be more compassionate about that but no

However I do remember getting bummed out that my hometown was booing a legend like Rey. The fact they cut the match time short yet try still try to make you “feel” emotions for Rey’s big moment was just salt in the wounds. Although Rey is an all-time great, him being placed in the title picture right after Eddie passed away and piggybacking on that tragic event came across as a blatant attempt to capitalize on Eddie's death. I'd never root against a talented individual being put in a position of winning the title, but context is important to know why some people were not having it. It's the same reason them using Paul Bearer's death to hype Punk vs. Undertaker was wrong or using Reid Flair's death to make Charlotte more sympathetic against Paige was distasteful. Real life happens, but there has to be a line that keeps certain events apart from wrestling, especially when it's not necessary to promote or build up a feud.
@guwopman3503
@guwopman3503 2 года назад
This is a very cynical way to view Rey’s royal rumble & championship wins. There were a few times Eddie’s passing was used for cheap heat (Orton promo), but it was much less “capitalizing” on Eddie and much more honoring him. That’s why they went with Rey. With all the honoring of Eddie that Rey did in the build up to Wrestlemania 22 it felt like a perfect tribute. It was a love letter to Eddie through one of his best friends.

@@guwopman3503 It didn't feel like an organic rise though. Rey talked about Eddie more than himself at this point, as if fans were going to forget Eddie. Since WWE is no stranger to exploiting tragic events for ratings, I think it's safe to say that they went overboard.

That is true, as much as I respect John and the sweat equity he's poured into the company, Kurt's right, they had the wrong idea. For his "Hustle. Loyalty. and Respect" mantra and the "Never Give Up" mantra, if they focused on making Cena a more convincing version of Hogan--you know: Hogan in a big match is gonna be booked to getting pummeled until he does the iconic Hulk-Up and gets the babyface heat and win--it would have been better for John, especially in places like Chicago if he looked like an authentic underdog that had to actually scrape and claw for every victory instead of just acting like he is one. This winded up being what happened with Daniel Bryan: winning against the odds, and the WWE writers room was at the mercy of the fans at that time.

With Rey, rather than him winning the Rumble and the title because he’s an extremely talented underdog the undertones were that he was only getting the title because Eddie died. Eddie was in the main event that night not Rey and it even followed him over to his hall of fame induction. Cena was easy, he moved away from what actually made him baby face and stand out which was his Word Life era. Look at the reaction to him returning to it against the Rock. im torn on this, cause ive been a big mysterio fan for seemingly my whole life, and kurt angle was DA SHIT at the time. looking back, they did rey such a disservice with they booked him, they almost made him look pathetic. he loses his mania match to randy orton, they still put him in and make it a triple threat. then the way they booked the match was so bad for rey, having him not only tap but then pull the ref out to keep him from seeing randy tap. after the royal rumble, rey was book like shit for all of 06. also, i have a love/hate relationship with the crowds in Chicago philly and new york. they always bring energy but holy shit do they like to hijack shows and seemingly go against the grain just for the sake of doing so. it always feels like they have to be THAT asshole about everything, maybe im wrong

I don't think Chicago was the reason Rey didn't looked as a Main eventer by Vince. Because Cena was overly booed and more so that night. Rey was always a big babyface he was never a heel. Cena started as a nobody then become a heel. Later turn face with an anti hero persona. Which the fans loved. Once he dropped the Anti hero fans got turned off by it. Yet Cena was over at WM 21 by WM 22 most of the fans got tired and wanted someone new. I think what hurt Rey was a Triple threat I think Kurt and Rey one on one would have been better and should have been the last Match. Cena vs HHH didn't have anything to celebrate at the end a but a win.

When he was running as the world heavyweight champion many people decided to watch more smackdown because HHH buried the top baby faces. Booker t was expected to do a huge run and crowd was behind him, he buried him. Rvd was hot and hhh buried him, Kane had just comeback and he was getting traction and he got buried. He put over goldberg and HBK and passed to batista afterwards. That was even considered the low point in raw because smackdown was beating the in the ratings
