Kurt Cobain - Nirvana Rare Full Interview Seattle, 1993

UPDATE May 2014: Edgar Klüsener, the interviewer (who I haven't seen in over 20 years!) contacted me recently to say thanks for uploading this video; he had lost his copy years ago. He kindly gave me some more info on the interview:
"Just for your own info: the interview was primarily for a number of print publications, among those two guitar magazines (which explains some of the questions). The camera crew was hired by a German TV station who hadn't managed to secure their own interview slot and asked me if they could film my interview instead. Since I recorded the interview using my own device, I was not miked up, hence my voice was mostly captured by Kurt's microphone."
I recently found an old VHS tape with this full interview, and managed to get it onto DVD and now upload it. Way back in 1993, a friend of mine knew a guy who worked for German TV - he interviewed lots of bands. On a night out, I told him I was a big Nirvana fan, and he said he'd recently interviewed them, and did I want a copy of the tape! I said yes of course, and he sent me the tape. Here it is, I haven't seen this interview anywhere else, so I think it's pretty rare. Enjoy!
Update: Apparently the interview date was August 10, 1993 - Thanks to phineas117

@OldmanSk8ing
@OldmanSk8ing 4 месяца назад
With that said. He knew more about music theory than he lead on. Using terms like arpeggios and Dorian mode. He played major and minor chords and power chords. But he also had his unique way of playing them and putting together chords that sounded good to him. He probably thought modes and all that was useless because he didn’t realize how to use them in making a song. What he was doing worked for him so why bother I guess.

As he said, the US actually supported Milosevic, so Milan Panic(US citizen, ICN owner ) was sent as a pro-Western, fake-"opposition" candidate in order to fuck up the real democratic opposition. So, the US plan worked: Milosevic won those elections and opposition was broken, oppressed and ignored by the West... I got into Nirvana at age 13 and to this day they have been my favorite band. However, I took a lot of abuse from people for it. I was proud though. I loved everything about them. The question I have always had is if all art is subjective how can people bash the tastes of others? It simply makes no sense. If you don't like Nirvana don't listen to them. These people who go trolling on Nirvana videos and comment about their lack of musicianship are ridiculous. Face it, you people will never change anyones opinion on their own tastes. Stop wasting your time talking about bands you dont like. Use that time to find other music you enjoy. Spending any moment of life looking to insult anyone or anything is sad.

I love listening to them being so fucking self aware and predicting how stagnant Grunge would become. I also love listening to them joking around about becoming a part of the "mainstream" and "establishment." The best thing about this band, though it is tragic, is that they never had a chance to get "old" and "dinosaur-like." They put out two big albums and boom. Kurt was gone and their legacy was sealed.

They're starting to show their age though. Foo fighters is the legacy regardless of opinions and my elementary school students say that's their dad's music. They're elementary school students. Who cares about their opinions on music? Most tweens/teenagers I come across can barely name 3 bands they like - let alone have a diverse enough opinion to talk about "old music." Stick with your macaroni drawings.

I wrote to the website creator and told them “If that was a fake Paul, then he wrote a lot of great songs. MrJim1972 Also, you have to realize he was being incredibly modest about his talent & knowledge about music. I'm willing to bet he knew the 6 basic guitar chords' names and their minor versions. He just was basically saying that he's no Yngwie Malmsteen type player for instance.
@MrJim1972
@MrJim1972 10 лет назад
Victor Jones I wouldn't agree that he'd have to know the circle of 5ths to be a songwriter!! 90% of Nirvana songs are simple power chords and single-note riffs... Actually, it's pretty hard to even think of many Nirvana songs that use full Major or Minor chords at all... Pennyroyal tea maybe has an A Minor, About A Girl an E Minor and a G... any others? I don't think Kurt knew much theory at all - maybe a little more than he let on, but not much, judging by his songs. You only have to look at his solos to see he barely knew a pentatonic scale - but it all sounds great for punk/grunge whatever you want to call it!

Actually there where a lot of bands that came out of the 70s and 80s that tried to sound more like grunge in a desperate attempt not to be buried by it. I don't think Kurt thought Jon Bon Jovi was untalented, his comment was just his way at poking fun at him for trying to jump on the band wagon. KISS tried to do it with Carnival Of Souls and Motley Crue with Generation Swine. It didn't work. At least those groups went back to playing what made them famous, Bon Jovi is a country singer now, I'm sure he'd try funk or disco if it came back.

Kurt was a fascinating individual, poetic, sensitive,creative, intelligent but also self destructive and at times contradictory and misinformed. Which I guess what I'm saying is sometimes we look at legendary artists as something more than human and that's just not true, they are purely human and flawed like the rest of us and to me that's part of what makes them legendary. That even with all their flaws like the rest of us have they found a way to tap into something that connects the human experience for people from all walks of life and in doing so they become immortal.

Gives me the new idea that maybe I don't have to think of music so damn literally all the time.
