You can see Kurt being facetious and disingenuous in that interview with the “bonehead” comment. He was cutting the others out with publishing and royalties, per Courtney’s influence. The band had practically ended when he died. I’m surprised they were never listed as suspects given the way he treated them.

Dave is super talented and a kick ass drummer. I think he’s just as talented, his music is just different than Nirvana’s.

In all fairness, Cobain was also a pretentious pr!ck. However, he was essentially God at that time and anyone he deemed worthy enough to join the stage with him was lucky as phuc.

I think Kurt was happy with Grohl until Grohl tried forcing himself into the songwriting. That was the issue

Blaming her for the band dynamics is stupid and misogynistic. She didn’t start having issues with Dave until after the band was over and she had to interact with him over Nirvana LLC. She actually clashed with Krist during Kurt’s lifetime the most. That’s why Krist isn’t in the wedding photos but Dave is, Krist thought he was rushing into marrying her but it seems like Dave stayed out of that

What surprised me is Pearl Jam selling 11 million more copies (Ten 6 times Platinum, Vs 5 times Platinum) against 6.5 Million copies of 4 Nirvana albums (Incesticide included) at the time of Kurt's death. Vs sold 4 times more than In Utero in the first week. With no videos. Not even SNL promo until spring 1994.

Dave was the final piece of the puzzle, it's true, but Kurt was the creative force and would have exploded even without Dave. I'm glad Dave was the drummer, though. It's what he does better than anyone in that style.

This is silly. Kurt and Krist were little kids when they met in Aberdeen. They went through high school as friends, and then became the biggest rock band in the world 11 years after. Those two had been interacting and with each other and around each other for half of their lives. It was normal for them to talk to each other almost in code after being brothers for so damn long. Dave on the other hand, was a relative new comer. Kurt rented a room with him for a time, but the reality is Kurt and Dave had only known each other for 4 years tops when Kurt killed himself. Dave was the youngest of the three, and in many ways, was the quiet little brother of the group. All that being said when I first saw this interview about 8 years ago I thought the same thing as the biographer. When you write music you DO NOT forget that someone else came up with the guitar riff. The guitar riff makes 35% of a song. The vocal melody makes 50%, the bass and the drums the remainder. By Kurt saying first that Dave came up with the drums and that they built the song off of that, only to be contradicted by Krist as he stood up for Dave in public and attributed the incredible guitar riff to him as well, seemed to really embarrass Kurt. I think in this moment Kurt thought that the guitar was HIS instrument in the band, and he had a self image as the person who had single handedly written the most important parts of all of Nirvanas other songs. Kurt then seemed to try to salvage this embarrassment by shifting the conversation, taking the narrative being presented from "The drummer wrote my guitar part" to something less dishonorable. He did this by insulting the initial riff Dave wrote as "Boneheaded", and went on to say that he refined it by "working on it" and it came out great. He essentially communicates "It was a cute simple thing that Dave turned over, and once I touched it and worked my brilliance, it became amazing". By reacting like this Kurt really shows his fragility and immaturity here. I am not sure that this amounts to pure jealousy per se, although that might have become an issue later on between those two if Kurt hadn't murdered himself. I tend to think this is more along the lines of someone who had become so accustomed to having the spotlight and praise lauded on them for so long, suddenly being publicly outed as deserving less of the spotlight. Kurt wasn't having any of that in the moment. Really his behavior here is in accordance with the bratty nature he displays in a lot of his other interviews and life actions. I don't think that it is attributable at all to some deep seedy jealousy of Dave. That's fan fiction created for a hooky narrative to sell books.

That's pretty subjective. Kurt was a killer guitarist. He just wasn't a showboat. The solo on In Bloom convinced me of that.

really? Being technically better doesn't mean you can come up with some of the most iconic guitar riffs of all time. Kurt was an artist, not a guitarist, and he used his guitar to make strange and beautiful sounds. Dave's playing is really unimaginative and basic rock n roll. He's a fantastic drummer, though.
