My favourite jazz singer of my lifetime and I’m a few weeks off 75. As others have said, to hear him live is like the Ellington band live, so good that no recording quite gets the beauty and richness of Kurt or the Duke Ellington band.
Some early Kurt Elling, didn't see this before: his high level musicality is confirmed: great renditions of Coltrane to classic ballads: but the arrangements here, man, gorgeous ! great singer and great taste in repertoire choice. respect !!! Mister Elling.
Holy smoke! This guy is AWESOME! What a voice!!! I just discovered him and can't get over his gorgeous voice! Just beautiful! I can listen to him for days. His beautiful voice transports me to many places. Unbelievable! Love his constant smile and beautiful hair too! Awesome singer!
With FLIRTING WITH TWILIGHT Kurt conquered Europe's audience, maybe also his worldwide's fans. On December 2001, I saw him two times in the same week. The first time, my seat was just in front of him and they started the set with the same two tunes. I'll never forget that week !
His live performances are amazing! I've seen him in concert seven times, and have tickets for Shows #8 and #9 in hand. I didn't see this show in 2001, but was lucky enough to see him at Newport in 2012. He. Was. Stunning. www.npr.org/event/music/158025337/kurt-elling-live-in-concert-newport-jazz-2012
Such an amazing talent...I am grateful that even though I only possess a fraction of his musicality, I can at least appreciate his gift. He sings as if he is a horn player.
IG got me here after seeing Elling and Jarreau CARRYING ON! What a voice! What great musicians! I know I'm late to the fan scene but baby, so glad I came.
I saw him at the Greely Jazz Festival in Colorado in 2002, traveling with the Amarillo College Jazz Choir. We had never heard of him and kept asking each other, "who is this Kurt Elling?" Well...we learned! What an amazing quartet!
papecat I imagine his abilities are above most peoples' heads, including a good percentage of musicians. Good thing I don't have to fully understand everything he does in order to enjoy it!
hottubz1965 The camera work here is amazing, splicing in and out of every angle. I would, however like to see the raw footage end to end from every camera though! One can only dream.
hottubz1965 he is a musician's singer....just like Mel Torme was. I conisder him the best jazz vocalist around. Love Mark Murphy too, You are right....a typical listener out there might find him so to speak "above their head". I love his work as a lifetime jazz lover.
Dude gets serious with the scatting on the last tune! Not a huge connoisseur of vocal jazz, but you can just tell this guy is a class act. Great combo supporting him as well.
waow!!! waow!!!! quel enchantement ce concert! du grand Kurt Elling et ces musiciens de génie!!! Révolution et Night dreamer sont renversant de talent...! bravo!!!!!!!
Wow. I have seen pieces of this concert but never the entire set. Thanks so much for posting. So great to see early Kurt, Laurence and the late great Rob. All the other side me are equally great. Classic. Thanks again.
+Morrie Louden agree, it's always respectful to recognize the members of the band, so here you go… Kurt Elling -vocalsLawrence Hobgood - pianoRob Anster - contrabassFrank Parker - DrumsBob Sheppard - tenor & soprano sax Mike Migliano - alto saxClay Jenkins - trumpet
Fruhling in Paris...(Nina Hagen), spring in a cold place....like the polar bear world........Kurt Ellings got a springtime too.....and the band. A snowrose from the iceground......
on the fashion side, i gotta say i didn't like the slicked back hair and suit look he's rocking lately, but after seeing this new age shaman wizard look, i'm glad he went for the change. Come Sunday with Pattattucci, Perez and Carrington you have to hear.
I want to like this. My brother loves Elling-has to stop himself from genuflecting when an Elling record spins. I recognize the immense instrumental chops the band is slinging around. Every player a potential bandleader. Monsters all; these cats. But, God help me, my ears reject the sound they're making. The notes slap against my ears as vigorous and slick and incomprehensible as thrown fishes. Living but lifeless notes falling all around; flopping and suffocating and dying with mechanical stoicism-like fishes. Living but lifeless. Lively but going nowhere. I want to like this. But I don't. For love of my brother, I wish I could stop hating it.
Look how his "costume" has changed from here (2001) till nowadays (2019) 😁👔👞, no 👓, no long 💇🏻♂️. Good job, Kurt or Kurt's wife or personal outfit adviser 😅👌🏻 PS Still, the most important : VOICE REMAINS BEAUTIFUL ❤️🎤
