Kurt-Lee Arendse HORRIFIC Aerial Challenge On Beauden Barrett | South Africa vs All Blacks 2022

This was another horrible incident in the game just like the Faf de Klerk head injury, this one was worse because it was just a stupid challenge by Kurt-Lee Arendse that could've resulted in serious injury to Beauden Barrett. I have no idea what he was thinking as he had absolutely no chance to get the ball. I know Kurt-Lee Arendse is not a dirty player, but he needs to be suspended for multiple weeks for this. Stuff like this is what red cards are for, not accidental head clashes.
I also have to give props to the ref and tmo for handling this perfectly. It was quick and decisive, they did not need to see 10 minutes of replays to come to the conclusion that this was a red card. They deal with it instantly.
But more importantly, it seems that both players seemed to be okay after going off the field. This could've easily been a lot worse for both players. Let's hope they make a fast and healthy recovery.

Arendse making illegal contact in the air at these three times during the game and getting away with it. Playing possum when he realized his reckless play had done damage. Had he been warned on the first, he wouldn't have been able to continue. Never had an idea of where the ball was on each occasion, head always down at contact.

Very dangerous play by Arendse that could have resulted in serious injury to both players. Broken neck, serious concussion, broken back, broken collarbone, you name it. He did a similar thing to Jordie Barrett in the first half when he had no chance to catch the ball but collided with the defending player. He deserves a few weeks suspension, but given World Rugby's inconsistency at the judiciary lately in the England v Australia and Ireland v New Zealand series with numerous mistakes made, who knows what will happen.
@lga-jm6it
@lga-jm6it 2 года назад
As an All blacks fan I will say it seemed Arendse was looking at the ball until the last moment when he saw Barret's Body looming in front of his head and he threw his arms up in instinctual self-defense. Just like knock-ons or bad passes even the best players in the world will occasionally misjudge time and space and mess up their tackles or kick chases. See Ta'avao vs. Ireland in test match 2 this year. These incidents may need to go heavily punished with red cards so players take extreme caution to avoid unsafe incidents, even if it means not contesting kicks properly, in the case of Arendse, or missing tackles completely, in the case of Ta'avao. But these errors which are minor in physical margin, if not in the results highlight how critical the 20-minute red card rule is. If this had happened in the first 5 minutes under IRB rules the All blacks may have won the game, and anyone who watched the game today could tell you that would have been an unfair punishment for one member of a team getting to a spot and jumping half a second later than his opponent.

Finally someone who is not a casual you are doing the Lord's work man and I'm 100% agreeing with you cause it annoys me how people expect international players to play this fast paced game while their tired and when they make a mistake which is not protecting their opposition they get punished heavily for it

I agree with the "20min and a sub can come" on red cards for these and the accidental head contact incidents, while keeping straight red for malicious actions. It is in the interest of the game and competition as well as attempting to look after the safety of the players.
@cortinatim1
@cortinatim1 2 года назад
I agree to a point. 20mins reds I think are good for accidental stuff, but this tackle is straight red all day and it deserves to be the entire game if it happens in the 5th minute. Barrett could easily be a quadriplegic after that. A red card is nothing compared to what could of been.
@nickjames3055
@nickjames3055 2 года назад
Doesn't matter. You're on the ground, you must bear responsibiliy since you're the player with solid ground under your feet and the ability to control yourself. The ball was won by Barrett and he was taken out, maybe not maliciously, but certainly recklessly by 14 Green. ALL reckless acts on the field are sanctioned by a red card under Law 9.11 of World Rugby's "The Laws Of the Game".
@christokapp597
@christokapp597 2 года назад
I have no issues with the red card and we are lucky that there are no serious injuries as far as I am aware. However in the context of rugby I think it is a farce. How do you decide that you are now pulling out of contesting the high ball. You are running towards the contact point and your eyes are on the ball, if you are not watching the ball you will not be able to catch it so the challenging player is in a no win situation if anything goes wrong. In my opinion either ban the up and under totally or bring in the rule that it must at least go 40m to minimize the risk of incidents like these. As a side note - one of the better ref and TMO combinations I have seen for quite awhile, clear and decisive decisions and instructions clearly communicated to the players.
@fergusoh5092
@fergusoh5092 2 года назад
He didn't jump, if he genuinely thought he had a chance of catching the ball, they would've collided together in the air. But they didn't, Ardense didn't jump, therefore he didn't contest for the ball and was in no position to catch it. What you should do if you don't think you'll get there in time is to slow down, let them land and make a dominant hit just after they land.

As a Bok supporter I agree. In that situation, if you are not, and cannot be, 100% committed to going for the ball, it’s best to slow down and let the other player get the ball. Then carry on from there. If you are 100% committed, and things go south, then it’s an incident. If not committed, and you try to back out in the middle with that close-your-eyes-and-hope-for-the-best-brace fashion, and take your opponent out like this, then a red card is the best possible outcome.

This was inevitable. Im afraid its the result of SA over employing the kick and chase. Our guys are becoming the best at running at mach 1 and getting airborne under the high ball for the catch/tap back. Any kick thats a tad too deep will cause our backs to chase and jump even more desperately, leading to these incidents. The tactic works but this is a major risk. This was a very scary thing to watch. Thankful that Beauden Barrett is okay after this. I think conversation also needs to be around players running back to make chasers run around them. Caleb Clarke sees the springbok player running on his outside, sprints with him to make him run around him, by the time springbok gets past him he jumps up at the same time as Barrett. Players running back to impede chasers is also dangerous tbh

I seriously doubt that this was intentional on Arendse’s part. At the speeds that the game is played he had a split second to decide whether to contest or not. In this case he clearly got it wrong, and so deserved the red, but the margin between a successful contest and a dangerous collision is so narrow that it can go either way. I really don’t envy either the players having to make those decisions, or the ref or TMO having to judge them.

I would have laughed a little bit if the situation wasn't so serious when the ref was like "Green 14 come over here...oh uh right he is also unconscious. Right well I will go to him". He got sent off on a stretcher. Poor Arendse, there was no ways he could legally contest that catch but it's his first game as an international player. I hope it doesn't put him out of International rugby for the foreseeable future. I hope that dumb decision won't cost him too much overall. There are a lot of potential Bok players who are vying for any vacant position.

I doubt any player deliberately tries to injure another .... its easy to sit on the side line and make comments ... you are not on the field .... now days the games are played at high speed ... just go back and check the footage ... in my opinion ... the new rules are the problem .... currently if a player jumps up they cannot be touched .... that is a risk the jumper is taking .... surely change the rule .... no jumping to get a high ball ... so what ... if the game slows down a few seconds ... less players would get hurt ...

Long before the Bok was within 3 metres such was his desperation he launched himself at Barrett like a unguided missile . One of the worst blatant displays of reckless irresponsible acts of rugby I've ever seen. Personally I thought the whole Ellis Park thing! and the Boks preparation was overdone and way over the top. The preparation was more in line with a MMA title fight with hostile crowds and explosive atmosphere.....grossly overdone suicidal tackling leaping across players disrespect for the Haka! well no, the first one, he did what any player does, he tried to go for the ball and disrupt the player. @@Ghoulza I disagree, so do SA referees! From their website: Illegal actions · A player jumps without really contesting for the ball. For instance, he is running into the player who is trying to catch the ball mainly to disrupt the reception of the ball. So clearly Ardense's act in the 10th minute was illegal.
