Hey, friends... here is a rendition of KUTAMBURA by the Bound Boys off of their 1989 album, PAMBERI.
The Bhundu Boys, fronted by Mhosva Marasha a.k.a. Biggie Tembo, were one of the earliest groups from Zimbabwe to garner international success... at one time opening three nights for Madonna at Wembley Stadium in front of a 24,000 strong crowd. This song is from their 1989 album PAMBERI.
I always liked this song but as I studied it more deeply while working on covering it, I realized just how great this song is... way more than had occurred to me before. My list of ‘greatest Zimbabwean songs ever written’ keeps growing and this is one of them. I just love it!
It’s a very poetic song. I’m still trying to decipher the true meaning of it... but since I have so many smart Shona speaking friends, maybe y’all can help me figure it out. Let me know in the comments section what you think this song is all about. The refrain, though, translates to “We are going to graze on weeds, complaining of hunger day after day... brace yourselves!”. Wow.
