A seriously experienced team will take to the field at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday against Ireland. My thoughts on selection.

PLUS I think i've nailed down my pack for the Bush XV, a challenge I've set myself whilst staying at Simbavati River Lodge in the Timbavati Private Game Reserve: www.simbavati.com

African Wildlife XV Backs: 9. Ratel (honey badger) - industrious and fearless. Pound for pound the most formidable animal in the veldt. 10. Leopard - agile, intelligent and has a strong killer instinct. 11. Black mamba - lightning fast, lethal and slick. 12. Kudu - strong, imposing and effective in tight areas. 13. Strandwolf (hyena) - territorial and aggressive, these scavengers can turn scraps of carrion into gold. 14. Springbok - fast, agile and evasive. 15. Secretary bird - long and effective at range, can strike and control at huge distances.

Irish ☘ Wildlife Backs: 9. The American Mink: Like a lot of our backs, not native to Ireland! (Love you JGP, Aki, & Lowe!) It escaped fur farms all those years ago so I'd imagine it could duck, weave, and snipe around ruck time. Probably would get eaten by its South African wildlife equivalent. 10. The Atlantic Salmon: Held in high regard by our people for its gift of knowledge. A nifty, wise, and repetitive (like our loop plays) animal that returns to our rivers to birth young each year. Probably get eaten by its South African wildlife equivalent. 11. Irish Mountain Hare: Long stride with remarkable turn of direction. A spiral kick well within its repertoire. Probably would get eaten by its South African wildlife equivalent. 12. The Badger: Common and widespread chunky, stocky, and robust for its size. Will put its body infront of anything (like cars at night sadly). Probably would get eaten by its South African wildlife equivalent. 13. The Red Deer: Ireland's largest native land mammal. Imposing with impressive branched antlers for burying through opposition. Probably would get eaten by its South African wildlife equivalent. 14. Common Seagull: Any tourists worst nightmare as they tuck into their fish & chips. An annoying and instinctive poacher with a nose for the line. A meter long wingspan perfect for gathering kicks. Probably would get eaten by its South African wildlife equivalent. 15. The Fox: Cunning, always scanning, and capable of a quick burst to evade threats. Probably would get killed by its South African wildlife equivalent. Basically our wildlife is harmless so leave us alone 😂😂 at least we can't get eaten I suppose!

Without Deon Fourie and Duane Vermeulen, the Boks need a guy to make steals at the breakdown ... and that is definitely Kwagga. Marx is also that player for the Boks, but with him on the bench Kwagga is much stronger in that area than Roos - who still gives away too many penalties at the breakdown, but is the future for the Boks.

Moerat is also the one selection that I'm not convinced by. Particularly given who else is on the park and on the bench. I would've thought another PSDT-type hybrid - i.e. BJD - would've been a better option. But maybe I'll be proved very wrong. I do think the Irish pack will back themselves to match the Boks up front, particularly in rucks and mauls and tackles. That's going to be a massive battle, and could determine whether the Boks get to use this potent backline fully. And on your Bushveld pack of forwards, you have to find space for a honey badger in the back row. Even if it's on the bench. That thing is like Michael Hooper, Neil Back and Heinrich Brussouw rolled into one.

There is an old Afrikaans joke about a rugby match between the animals and the insects. (The insects win because of their ankle-breaker winger centipede. Centipede only comes on in the second half as an impact player because it took so long to put on his boots). But you got the forwards close to the selections in the joke. LOL.

Here is my question - how will the bench look when Willemse, Moody and Am are all fit again? Because Willemse and Moody are current shoe ins for the next world cup squad (I know its far out, just talkin young enough) - so What will happen then? Kolbe scrumhalf backup? Grant makes room for Willemse? Sacha is def a future prospect as well - how do you give all these exceptional multi positional backs room?? Would we go to a 5 / 3 split again with Tony Brown running riot? Its almost like the Springboks are so spoilt for chose that we would want to field more players on match day just to keep everyone active and on form and not sitting out.

Four international-quality utility players for the back line ... Kolbe (scrummie/kicker/wing/fullback), Kwagga (back three/8th man/centre), Williams (scrummie, wing) and Sasha (Flyhalf, kicking, center, flyhalf ...) the riches indeed.

I'm sure this is just me, but could there have been some method to the madness of playing Sacha at 12 for the Stormers? I was sure Dobbo had a plan with him and that he would get the run in the 10 jersey. But let's say you are Rassie and you know this kid is going to be big. Do you ask Dobbo to maybe play him at 12 to be a bit more rounded, and have a bit better defense? Because you know that he might need to be a utility back for when your 6-2 split backfires (which it will one day, you do get those days) with an unfortunate injury or yellow card? I just get the feeling that the way Sacha has been handled at the Stormers was maybe to serve the Boks.

Thanks Tim. You should also select an Irish wildlife team :-) If you have not seen a Kudu, then ok, but I would put that at lock, as they can jump higher than you can imagine and they are tough as nails. That would move the Cape Buffalo to hooker. looks like you are enjoying yourself. this makes me homesick, but good that you are also experiencing this. hope the family is not too jealous

Kwagga starting gives an insight into the likely strategy - dominate the breakdown. He's the best jackler SA have, apart from the mighty Malcolm Marx, and given that Marx is not starting I suspect Kwagga will be front and centre of the action. Steenekamp and Van Staden will join Marx in the second half to turn the screw into the Irish tight five. Great to see Sacha on the bench. Libbok has had his chance. I haven't seen enough of Moerat or Williams to see if they've earned their spots, but the first XV is pretty close to full strength.

Moderate isv there to neutralize the Irish lineouts. They attack off the lineouts. Disrupt that, with a slow recycle at breakdown, and they are going to find it tough to get a rhythm going.

@@SmcdMcd-d2k Because maybe you don't understand how depth is created. It isn't as easy as "I want to pick this talented youngster" and putting him in against the all Blacks. You need more than talent - you need game time and experience. You want to be sure that this bloke you picked can handle the pressure. Rassie and Jacques achieved this with very good game time management. Yes, in the world of coaching, this is genius; something Rassie got an honorary Ph.D for.
