Footage covering the lying in state of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the former Ghanaian leader, who died on April 27 1972 at 63 years of age while receiving medical treatment in Romania.
It was six years after his overthrow in a military coup. Nkrumah had lived in exile in the West African country of Guinea.
The venue was the Palace of the People in the Guinean capital city, Conakry. Present were Nkrumah's widow, Fathia; Guinean President Sekou Toure; President Apithy of Dahomey (now Republic of Benin); and President William Tolbert of Liberia.
Under a banner reading "La Revolution est Exigence", wreaths were laid and eulogies delivered including one by President Tolbert.
Transcript of Tolbert's eulogy:
"In fine, we are gathered here to set forth his brilliant light to dispel darkness in the lives of all who are oppressed, suppressed, and distressed by racial discrimination, segregation and colonialism, and to mourn the loss of a fallen hero who was an indefatigable and gallant, indomitable fighter for the great cause of Africa."
President Toure exhorted the audience, which included a delegation from the Soviet Union, with the following call to arms:
"Honour...Gloire...Victoire...Vive La Revolution..."
