robert Last dam right lol, I'm still scared to open mine up as much as it's possible, it takes your arms off coming out of turns lol, I ride mine pretty mellow and tend to be more aggressive on my milder kx250f, the 500 is just too much of a beast for non pro riders imo
100%. I bought mine used. I had no idea how many hours on the piston. I rode it at least 10 years, 4-6 times per year, and the compression was still good. Unstoppable engine.
Looks like the 500 guy tired out. He had that whole race with a big lead and almost stopped over one of the jumps. I've owned 2 500s and they'll give you serious arm pump. You have to constantly keep bringing your head back over the number plate from the pull!!
Damn. I MX'd in the '70's and watching this just blew me away. Open class 2-strokes are where it's at. Always has been, always will be. Just don't see any Husky, CZ or Maicos like the good old days. Sniff. The last KX500 I saw was going out the front door of the showroom. A kid bought it. Proceeded to fire it up in the parking lot and wheelie it into the business next door.
Yeah yes yep.Every comment about the 500 is true, but i'l tell you what credit needs to be given to that 250 rider.you gotta be good to hang with a bike with twice the engine and my god did he what.he was on it hard.incredible riding from both no dought, but to hang with that KX 500 like that to me is insane.thats the fastest MX Ive seen
I just finished watching Marty Moates on DVD when he was the first American to ever win the 500 USGP at Carlsbad California back in 1980. 45 minutes plus two laps at 100 plus degrees on a 500...He won Both Moto's on a LOP Yamaha 460. He wasn't even a factory rider. Nice video by the way! I love those 500 2-smokers. 250's next in line

I was at the Carlsbad 500 USGP when Mikkola chased Wolsink down in the second moto. Wolsink won by a bike length then crashed just after the finish. I never saw anyone ride an open class bike like Mikkola did that day. He was on a Husky, Wolsink on a Suzuki.
The power of the kx500 coming out the turns and on the long strates is too much for the 250, and I feel the 500 has a little more than the riding is giving it, he's still motoring like lol just not max imo
KX500 is a beast, I'm still scared of mine lol, had it for years and still haven't mastered all its power, I look after it a lot more than I should these days and tend to ride my kx250f
I gotta ask about the cornering technique used. It seems like the riders are all about going as fast as possible into a corner, breaking really hard (almost stopping), then turning in a very small space, and then getting back on the gas. It's not about conservation of momentum. So, compared to how F1/road racers handle corners, which method is faster? What conditions cause the riders to not opt for trying to 'straighten out' the corners by approaching wide while braking, aiming for the apex, and then hitting the gas as soon as you hit the apex of the turn?
Depends on the bike, track and what you're setting up for next. If you've got the grunt to hook up and launch hard, and your bike can pivot, diving in and squaring off the turn before launching out may work. On the other hand, if you can rail the berm, it's a longer way around but you don't give up as much speed.
The other reason why they do that, is it makes it harder for the rider behind to come up and block the leader's line at the corner to take the lead. Hints the name block pass.
I'm surprised the kx500 didn't fall completely apart before the fifth lap. I had one for 6 months last year and every time I rode it something vibrated loose and fell off. the motor mounts fell off in the garage while it was idling and was trying to get gloves and helmet on. very expensive upkeep. I ended up trading it for a cr250r and in my opinion it's a much better bike!
+Sgt Meowenstein yeah I have and I bought by the gallon, even the red kind that isn't supposed to loosen up till heated to 600 degrees. made no difference. ride the trail one time fast then turn around and retrace slowly and pick up what you can find on the way home, then spend three days trying to replace the parts you couldn't find. EVERY RIDE was like that. you couldn't give that bike back to me.
I have a '04 KX-500 (last year) and it is the most reliable bike I have ever owned! Parts falling of it? Seriously? Loctite works great! Maintenance every week, that kinda stuff works. Most beginners are like you! Trash a bike because you don't know what your doing with a 500cc Beast!!!! 2 Strokes Rule! 500 2 strokes are the KING!!!!
haha my uncle kept his old kawi 500 for probably twenty years and only got a new 450f because it was too much power for him. dude's almost 60 and shreds like a savage
thomas foresman, yup bought an 01 brand new been throwing boulders at people still to this day . Absolutely agreed, get to know the bike work a few bugs out, a little loctite and basic maintenance and most reliable bike on the planet. Sure there are better mx bikes out there but this bike will out last any of them by far and do everything from track, woods, sand to Hill climb
I figured the 500 would get the hole shot and I figured he the (little) 250 would catch him by the end of the race. I kid when I say little 250 because they have some serious power too. I owned an RM 250 and I can't see myself ever needing any more power than that on a dirt bike. I've never ridden a 500. The closest I came was getting a ride on the back of a YZ 490 once. My buddy's bike broke down and the YZ 490 guy took me to my house to get tools. I might want to ride one once in my life but I mean who in their right mind lends their 500 CC 2 stroke out. I never like letting anybody ride mine....too many bad experiences doing that. For my riding style the KTM 200 SX engine is the one for me but if I ever get another bike I'll get a YZ 250 2 stroke. Of all the 250's I've riden, the YZ has the smoothest power delivery and you can't beat having stock KYB suspension. That said I'd still probably put a heavier counter weight on it. I did ride a CRF 450 once and again not for me, I'm no pro and that power is extreme. 4 strokes have a little too much maintenance involved for my liking.
It's just the rider, give me that CR250 you could kick everyone's ass but that KX500 is the monster doesn't weigh that much more. I'll take the KX500 IMO! All day long I could wide open that KX then you would be untutch able.
That 500 was moving but that cr250 was cooking can't beat them old Honda 2 strokes like the Energizer Bunny they just keep going and going. Plus the sound Honda 2 strokes make is one of a kind love it.
When you talk about a real hard bike to handle, here's a link to 'real' men riding the older air cooled kx500, s, I owned one of these just a few years ago, how the hell they rode these things so quick i'll never know, big old heavy lumps, crap suspension and 'drum' brakes. Interesting story about Laurence Spence on the no. 1 bike that catches up Burgess on the no. 2 bike in my clip. Relatives of Spence recognised my bike and as one of Laurences old bikes! They come over from Ireland to buy it from me in Scotland, then restore it for their father who 'still' rode in the senoirs! :-) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wpyCclkIGDc.html
Kx500 vs cr250 ? LMAO frist of all put a real rider on both bikes & let em rip, from the looks of it like your just not trying, I see alot of advanges on this track where to make some speed etc.. might wanna stick to your class son
Why did it take you 5 laps to pass him? Don't fear the roost bro. This track had no technical jumps, all basic tables.... 5 year olds probably raced the previous race.....
Man I miss my 83 cr 480 n 87 cr 500 ! Still kicking myself for ever selling the 480 knowing what their worth nowdays! ALOT MORE THAN WHAT I PAID FOR IT BRAND NEW !!
Superb riding by both guys ! You guys are top notch. I bet the guy on the 500 is tired as hell haha ! Watching the guy on the 500 that can really push it shows just how much power they have. Pulling away big time every time. 💪
yep, arm pump--you know it! anyone who can manhandle a 500cc 2 stroke, of ANY kind, for 5 hot-n-hard laps deserves some mad respect. i own both a 91 kx500 and a 95 cr500, been riding for 35yrs and cant even come close to that! just too much bike, you always gotta control it or it will control you....
Theres just no logic to it. Its only going to hurt you because youll either get stuck in the gate or hit it and slow down/ bobble. If your the proper distance away and have a good reaction time you can get enough of a jump out the gate to get a decent start, rather than risking getting stuck and having a terrible start.
