I met Michael Stipe at the 40 Watt Club maybe a week after Automatic For The People came out. I was drunk and sort of rudely bumped into him too hard, but he was very nice about it and allowed me to make up for it by buying him Rolling Rocks all night as we both stood there and watched Vic Chesnutt perform. If he's reading this he might remember the night because they presented him with the original painting that graces the cover of Talking Heads Little Creatures album in an onstage ceremony between sets. The secret REM show at the 40 watt was the following weekend. Good times! It was like the exact moment in time when he was the biggest rock star in the world.

These are great, wise legends. They wrote the soundtrack to my life since age 14. I’m glad they are still out there doing interviews.

Popular culture is worse off for the absence of these genial and creative gentlemen’s integrity and their take on the world. Damn I miss REM

Having grown up in Atlanta and Athens, I’m naturally a huge R.E.M. fan. I ran into Michael a couple of times at Blue Sky Coffee in Athens, and he was so kind. Watching this was such a treat and I’m sure it was for you as well. Thanks for sharing.

Dont care when the kids knock their idea of the "Arena Rock" REM-they werent around in the 80's when this band was the epitome of cool. All those early albums are burned into my psyche.

I think it sounds like more than an REM album; simply one of the best 90s rock albums by any band, if that makes sense.

7:11 feel like I've been waiting my entire life to hear Michael state this exact connection to Achtung and Zooropa. Those albums, that entire tour, and then Monster (and tour) and New Adventures knocked me senseless as a teenager in the 90s

Patti Smith used to live in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, as Michael says, on the outskirts of Detroit, not far from where I used to live. Never met her but always kept my eyes open for a chance meeting in those suburbs, which was not conducive to meeting anyone easily. Lol Anyhow, did you say “Driver Ace?” Gosh, I hope not.

I almost didn’t recognize Stipe and Mills. They’re getting old and so am I. It’s a good thing I rarely look in the mirror. I could be in for a shock. 😳Yikes! Time is a Cruel Thief! It literally takes everything away from you and there’s nothing you can do. 👎🏻

Miss this guy and the band. They just don’t make bands and music like this anymore
