The Jesus and Mary Chain’s William Reid on Starting Over, 40th Anniversary, & Digging the Eagles
The Jesus and Mary Chain’s William Reid joins Kyle Meredith to talk about the band’s new LP, Glasgow Eyes. The guitarist/songwriter tells us how the brothers had to restart recording the album from scratch after their engineer lost the entire original album, how this record lines up with their 40th anniversary and how it speaks to their career, and their eclectic list of influences, which includes prog rock and the Eagles. Reid goes on to discuss how his technical limitations have always driven the band’s sound, why they wrote a tribute to Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground to close out the album, and an update on their upcoming biography, which may come out later this year or next.

Great interview. Helps that I listened to the new album for first time earlier today. Some great songs on this album and some totally unexpected directions which sounded refreshing and totally JAMC at the same time. One of my most favorite bands. Seen them 4 times from '92 on. Last time took my son when he was 16. It was his first show. He dug it. He's a great guitarist now and we jam. Thanks William / JAMC. Your music has been a major part of the soundtrack to my life since age 13.

In the documentary Autoluminescant, William along with Douglas Hart , Thirston Moore and Kevin Shields state the unnoticed brilliance of Rowland S Howard of Birthday Party who showed them places you could take a guitar with just a jaguar, reverb amp and fuzz pedal. As Hart says ' when we first heard him, it was like something from outer space. They each learnt alot from.Rowland's unique wall of sound.

The 18:46 idea of songwriters suing others like the famous George Harrison chiffons lawsuit is ridiculous . By the way both those artists had ripped off an old gospel melody that I believe had been played many times before in church. They are different sounding songs anyway. You don’t get painters suing each other for copying a style. Picasso and Braque both quarreled over who invented cubism but they didn’t sue each other in those days. I guess there wasn’t a huge financial interest in who was correct but music and record making is essentially commercial so big companies get greedy. How do young musicians develop style other than copying and combining their various influences.

21:35 good songs can simple or complex. As long as they move you. You can qualify taste too which is not about technical ability but might still incorporate songwriting craft and basic techniques with good ideas behind them. And JAMC don’t make naive music, it’s rich with style and mood and atmosphere. Makes me think if “Rumble” link Wray. So simple but grooves and paints a vivid picture. Plus it’s all instrumental. It’s got texture and tone and taste in its minimalism. Whereas take Ariana grande who is a huge talent but has no artistic merit. She’s just a record saleswoman.

Initially,,the new Glasgow Eyes (part. "Chemical Animal' track) album sounded like a prison made up of distorted illusion and I need to be confused to achieve liberation. That's the point I'm listening to this interview, William Reid knows a lot about confusion and plays guitar like the guys from Spacemen 3. Unlike Jim Reid who is so charming you'll get stuck in a corner wishing you got wings to fly like an angel.

His accent is pretty thick. I saw JAMC on their automatic tour and I met them behind the venue to get their autograph, their accent was so thick I could barely understand what they were saying. I thought they were doing it purposely to run me off. It wasn't until I saw the movie trainspotting I realized that scottish accent is legit and hard to understand. I had to watch trainspotting a few times so my brain could adjust to and understand that accent.
