While at Kyle of Lochalsh, I took the opportunity to cross to the Isle of Skye. The short ride across to Kyleakin was free of charge for foot passengers, so I made more than one return trip on the MV Portree. It's sister seen operating is MV Lochalsh and two others were also used seasonally to cope with increased traffic. MV Portree, ceased to operate this route a few months later in December 1964 and renamed Portree II having been based at here at Loch Alsh since 1952. It later served a variety of crossings in Greenock then Belfast, Lowestoft and Orford. It's bigger replacement took the MV Portree name but struggled without a side loading turntable.
These turntable ferries have almost died out now. Thanks for your comments, I'm glad to hear one of these iconic RORO vessels is still operating.

These ferries had been replaced by a much bigger roll on roll off ferry by the time I was posted to the Outer Hebrides in 1985. I used to take it to get onto Skye then drive up to Uig and get a Cal-Mac ferry to North Uist. I don’t know when the bigger, 15~ vehicle ferry replaced these two but it was that which the bridge replaced. As has been mentioned previously, there is still a turntable ferry operating from Gleneig which I used last year (2022]. You can even watch the seals on the rocks and swimming alongside you from it. Wonderful film.

Thanks for your info & Gleneig update @ThatMicro4Guy ... my viewers will be interested to see your insightful photography videos www.youtube.com/@ThatMicro43Guy ... apologies for my archive's low-res cine photography, quality somewhat lost in digitizing to video which I'd like to rescan with modern equipment to republish here on RU-vid.

Great footage, appreciate you putting them up for us. There is one turntable ferry preserved and still running - The Glenelg Skye Ferry. Went on it a few weeks back and it was wonderful.

Great historic film. Apart from the bridge, many of the scenes of Kyleakin(pronounced Kyle AAkin, not Kyleekin) are still very similar today. Certainly, the majority of the buildings are virtually unchanged. This is a wonderful archive, Thanks for sharing it. Cheers for now, Dougie.

Hello Alan - enjoyed the old footage as was a regular user of this ferry while based in Arbroath in the marines - we would climb on skye prior to winter deployment in norway - using the turntable ferries to get the vehicles across. Anyway, dont know if your aware, but there remains one smal operating turntable ferry that will allow a crossing to skye - even since the building of the bridge. Its a bit of a long way around on the mainland to get access to it via a pleasing drive up and through Glenelg - I think it takes about 6 cars. Its an ongoing community project currently. This link may be of some interest - skyeferry.co.uk/

Wonderful, and Heather can get a nice breather between bits of narration. No chance with the railway films!
@AlanSnowdonArchive

In fact Heather is never rushed when we record the narration. She reads the script I've written, a short passage at a time, while I record her to tape. The tape is later played back to the editing computer, and the audio recording is chopped up into the individual passages. These are then fitted to the visuals. The only problem is that as film was expensive for me back iwhen these were filmed, the shots were often rather short. And it can be quite a game drafting the script to fit the pictures - often I'd like to give more details, but there isn't the time, if it's to fit. Alan S.

Many thanks for your reply Alan. I won’t have any sleepless nights now knowing Heather is taking it easy! Anyway, the films and, of course, the narration, are brilliant. I remember the Penrith/Keswick fairly well.

There is still a turntable ferry operating from the mainland to Skye, from Glenelg run as a community owned ferry. See www.glenelgscotland.com/skye-ferry.htm .... it’s a fabulous way to get on and off Skye.....

Thanks for that info which can now be seen by viewers who might like to experience this special small ship. As the last survivor of the type, I do hope she could end up being saved from the scrapman.
