Kyle Schwarber is One of the Most prolific Home Run hitters in all of Major League Baseball, and One of the Greatest Offensive Forces in the game. A powerhouse in the Philadelphia Phillies lineup as they aim for another World Series appearance this postseason.
Yet lots of people might not even rank him as a Top 100 Player in MLB...

Putting the ball in play gives the defense the chance to screw up. But know what’s even better than the singles he doesn’t get? Bombs that crush the opposing teams spirit in huge playoff games. If he does that the bottom of the first after making a pitcher work 8 pitches, I don’t care if he strikes out the other 4 times that night. This last couple years, he and max muncy have been like the same person offensively. They sit and wait for the pitch they want, and they mash the hell out of it. Or else they get on base better than 85% of the league. And like you point out, they are on teams surrounded by guys that will complement them incredibly well.

Batting average isn't just singles lol what the creator of this video said about batting average has a lot of merit. Imagine if Schwarber would hit more singles or doubles instead of striking out as much. He would be producing even more runs, moving runners, and make himself an even more feared all around hitter which would also enhance his chances of walks and homeruns. His 2019 and 2021 seasons would be a more ideal season you would want out of him, maybe with some of 2022 mixed in. Schwarber is a really good player but when he hits around .230-.260 like he has in the past it makes him even more of a threat

Schwarber also has a effect that cant be described with numbers, the Phillies are like 10 times better when he bats leadoff instead of down the order, plus the boost of confidence the gives to the clubhouse . knowing that 1 kyle schwarber swing can bring you back into the game

Rojas only got called up a few months ago. Since hes been called up and Harper moved to 1st Schwarber is at DH which is perfect. Bohm is also better at 3rd than 1st. So we have Marsh or Pache at LF, Rojas at CF, Castellanos at RF, Bohm at 3rd, Turner at SS, Stott at 2B, Harper at 1B and Realmuto at C. With that lineup the only liability in field is Castellanos.

Wade Boggs did have a 7 year stretch where, barring one season at .325, his batting average was between .349 and .368 which is a difference of just .019 points. But Boggs at that stage was a freak. Probably the best hitter I ever saw. Better than Gwynn, at least as far as just year in, year out consistency. During that stretch, he had a three year run of 200+ hits and 100+ walks. I'm a die hard Yankee fan, but I bow before Boggs as the best pure hitter I ever saw. Plus he is one of the most interesting g characters the game ever produced. Fried chicken before every game, and if he had a... Er... Good night with some lady and then had a 4 for 4 game or something, he would, have another good night with the same lady.

you know what's an important stat that NO ONE ever discusses? don't even know if it's measured: how effective a hitter is when the score is within a couple runs. you could have a Barry Bonds-like player on your team who's entire production occurs when his team is way down or ahead and his numbers become essentially meaningless to team wins and losses versus a hitter with only half the production, but it all comes in places that puts his team in the lead or helps them pull away from the opponent. so which hitter is actually more valuable then?

In a vacuum, without considering defense at all, a team of .300 batters with zero home runs, will win more often than not against a team of Schwarbys. But one Schwarby, surrounded by the right guys, can be valuable. It is all about being well balanced, which the Phillies are.

@@craigcavaliere6744 So you don't know. Skepticism doesn't equate to facts. One thing I do know is that it takes a minimum of another pitch. Another pitch to hit the ball, botch a pick-off, botch a pitch to the backstop, balk, or even wear a pitcher out. These pitchers are throwing harder and harder while the tendons are not getting stronger; which means another batter is faced, which means going deeper into the pitching staff. At a minimum you wear the pitcher down another pitch.

No analytics nerd worth their salt will tell you a walk is as good as a hit. But they will tell you that OBP and OPS tells you much more about a hitter than BA. But saying that a walk = a hit is never something that an analytics person would say. That is an oversimplification of the analytic argument for a player like this. The simple but more accurate argument would be about a walk vs a ball put in play or better yet, a walk vs a ball weakly put in play. A weak ball in play can move a runner or even get the hitter on base but it also could be a double play or just an out. A walk is a guaranteed no out and a runner reaching base. That is the argument. Not a walk vs a hit.

Analytics and traditional stats don't place any value on what a guy like Schwarber or a 9th place hitter with 20 HR power does to a lineup and the opposing pitcher. We almost seem to forget baseball is still a team sport despite the value placed on individual stats. The other undervalued player is the elite CF or middle infielder if they don't have at least a league average bat. Eyeball test does mean something still.
