Simeon Kyurchiev is a multiple times national Kyokushin Champion, professional MMA fighter and head coach of Elite Martial Arts Richmond. Here, alongside one of his high level students, he goes over one of his favourite ways to ensure he can utilise his kicks effectively from close range. The ability to change distance is a much needed one in any striking based combat sport so these details can be applied to Kickboxing, MMA, Boxing and Muay Thai as well.

Thanks to Simeon for sharing this very usable technique with us. From experience a lot of the TMA teachers in particular are often quite protective about their "secrets" which only hurts their own MA / sport and club in the long run.

Thanks a lot Simeon for the awesome tips ! I truly love the quick stance switch mid-combo ! I'm adding this to my striking skillset! OSS.

Simeon's technique is impeccable, hands down. What I don't like about this kick though is that the kick goes somehow from down upwards, which is very dangerous when executing proper chusoku mae geri (kicking with the ball of your foot). This way you can easily kick his elbow, most likely breaking your toes, so the fight will be all over. Looks spectacular, the kick is devastating if you succeed, but if it fails, it will fail badly.

And also u might end up kicking ur opponents groin which might get u a warning or disqualified. May have to practice on that precision when doing the mae geri like this.

I (personally) do not care about warnings/disqualification, because I am not training for competition, but rather prefer to know the practical aspect of techniques. Anyway, proper mae geri is truly a powerful kick, especially in everyday life, where you normally have shoes on and you don't have to worry about your toes. Most people have 0 body conditioning and will be practically done after taking a clean mae geri, which is surprisingly easy to place on somebody without experience in kicking sports.

The switch front kick really can be applied to kickboxing getting out the pocket

No offence but this is more like meduim range than close range

The ranges are different depending on sport. For competition karate or tkd this is absolutely close range.

@@ironfront9573 I guess from kickers perspective it is almost a clinch ;)
