Not from Chicago, but still of interest in that this is a complete edition (recorded on 3/4" Umatic videotape) of Eyewitness News on KYW Channel 3 in Philadelphia, PA, anchored by future NBC News anchor Jessica Savitch (co-anchors Mort Crim and Vince Leonard were on assignment). With reports by Orien Reid, Robin Mackintosh, Matt Quinn and Bob Bradley, sports by Al Meltzer (whose Chicago connection was via his later 1970's stint with WMAQ Channel 5), and Bill Kuster with weather.
Includes:
Opening, with report of major rain storms which claimed life of 14-year-old John Walsh who was standing near a tree (not a good idea) and struck by lightning, and left other destruction in its wake, following a heatwave with 93° temperatures; this is followed by title sequence, Jessica introducing herself, and preview of other top stories.
- On weather, Bill explains how the weather came out the way it did, and forecast for next day
- Controversy over miscalculation of offshore energy reserves by government geologists, but energy chief promises enough gas through summer
- Philadelphia electric bills to go up by $3.00 in August

It’s very educational to see old broadcasts from the past but also sad too. Jessica Savitch did great here even my mother told she her once in person when she was doing calls for Jerry Lewis’ tele-a-phon. A piece of Philadelphia history lost but not forgotten in Savitch. By the time I was a kid Metzer and Reid were already at WCAU. I didn’t know they worked for KYW in the 70’s.

Thank you for posting a complete episode of local TV news. I'm sure most Philly-area residents my age and older never forgot the to-be-famous Jessica Savitch (and her respected co-anchors Vince Leonard and Mort Krim , a team that led Eyewitness News to no. 1 at some point; I recognized that weather guy as Bill Kuster but wow did he come across laconic here). I was a kid and we watched mainly Channel 10 (WCAU), so except for the familiar faces - and the '70s serif friendly typeface that screams KYW Channel 3 - this program is all new to me, in a sense. That lead story about the weather was surprising to me since it shows not much has changed on what makes a big deal on local news. Those power outages (we definitely had less widespread events back then), the excessive heat that led to the big storm, but no "Global Warming" or Climate Change to get the blame. That stormy evening made no lasting impression on me. I am thankful we suburbanites had the swim club or the backyard hose for those hot summer days and didn't resort to jumping in that fountain down on the Parkway.

I have heard and read she should have stayed in Philly. She was excellent here and seemed stable, happy and on top of her game. Going national seemed to be her downfall?? Over her head in Washington?? Not sure..

I usually watched Channel 6 ( ABC action news). In June 1975, I just saw my first Pink Floyd concert at the Philadelphia Spectrum. The NHL Hockey Philadelphia Flyers had just beaten the Buffalo Sabres for their 2nd Stanley cup in May 1975; 44 years later May 9, 2019, Flyers still are looking for that 3rd cup after being in the finals 1976, '80, '85 ,'87, 97, 2010...! George McGinnis was signed onto the NBA basketball Phila 76ers for 2 years. Sonny Jorgenson was originally a Philadelphia NFL Eagles QB, traded to Washington Redskins... That stinking JAWS movie starting June 20,1975...BOO! JESSICA Savage, drove into a canal in New Hope, Pa., early 1980's...a shame!

KYW is Chicago related, because KYW was Chicago's first radio station. When the precursor to the FCC started rearranging station frequencies to reduce clutter in the dial, KYW couldn't get a clear channel signal that could be heard well in Chicago itself, so Westinghouse requested to have the station moved to Philadelphia, which was granted.
@tomsayen9295
@tomsayen9295 Год назад
True. KYW is one of very few, perhaps the only, radio station call letters that have been in three cities: Chicago (1921-1934), Philadelphia (1934-1956), Cleveland (1956-1965) and finally Philadelphia again, 1965 to the present. Both the radio and TV outlets were "swapped" between Philadelphia and Cleveland in 1956, and "swapped" back in 1965 when Westinghouse cried foul to the FCC.

In the early 1980s she put together an enthralling and spectacular documentary on NFL football, gambling, possible game fixing and the outlaw line. One of the best things I've ever seen on the internet. It's extremely difficult to find online. I've seen it on RU-vid only to disappear then reappear then disappear, etc.

Wow, what a great look at mid-70's local news. KYW did it well, and Jessica was amazingly good here. I have seen the docs where she looked bad, but here we see a happy, relaxed news anchor at the top of her game. It isn't any wonder she quickly moved to network.

"Eyewitness News: In the Pool"? Imagine Jessica Savitch doing the news in a swimsuit? That would have been must-see TV Thursday. BTW, the instrumental played during the pool footage is a cover of "Wade in the Water" by the Ramsey Lewis Trio -- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-skCYAnFcQu8.html ...pretty appropriate choice. That opening theme at 1:30 ... I half-expected to see some revolutionary patriots with flutes and drums walk across the screen. 28:52: "We Talk Your Language"...what the heck is that supposed to mean? Was KYW-TV doing shadow newcasts in Spanish, French, Italian, Greek, Chinese or something? LOL, that is an interesting tagline.
