In this video, I demonstrate how to use feeler gauges, measure shims, and do a valve adjustment! I also show how to use my excel sheet to easily calculate the most desired shim thickness.

NO! The clearance should NOT be that tight. If you're bending the feeler gauges, there is insufficient clearance. Those bent feeler gauges are no longer accurate. Find an experienced mechanic to re-teach you what a proper clearance feels like with a feeler gauge. Remember, loose valves are happier than tight valves.

When I’m turning the engine to do my next measurement I think my cams are jumping time on the chain. How do you prevent this with the valve cover and chain tensioner removed?

Your way too tight! It’s called a feeler gauge not a shim, a shim is a transvestite. The gauge should slip in easy. You are actually depressing the valve spring the way you’re doing it.
