This was beautiful. Both the content and the editing is pure perfection. Another book to put on my ever growing TBR. 😊

This is a wonderful review of my favourite book. I only read the Hungarian version so I don't know much about the translation. I tried to read it but even though I knew the original text I barely understood it, my English is not so good. =) As far as I know it took 6 years for George Szirtes to translate it. Definitely one of the best novels I've ever read. Thanks for this video, your editing is beautiful!

your English seems good to me! that's wonderful you're able to read him in the original. who are some of your other favorite writers, Hungarian or non?

PaperBird It's quite sad but most of my favourite Hungarian writers are not available in English translation. Or even if some of their works are translated, not the best ones in my opinion. But here's a short list: Magda Szabó, Péter Esterházy, Sándor Márai, Ferenc Barnás. A few of their books has English editions. And I could write a much longer list of the authors who should be translated. =) Besides Hungarian literature I mainly read contemporary Scandinavian authors, e.g. Per Petterson, Kim Leine, Roy Jacobsen, Lars Saabye Christensen, Tore Renberg, Jussi Valtonen, Sofi Oksanen, Kjell Askildsen... And I adore the Russian greats, Dostoevsky is my all time favourite.

I love Bela Tarr but I still can't bring myself to watch his epic 8 hour film Satantago. I've had it for years. I also have The Melancholy of Resistance on my shelf. I recently read Gogol's collected stories translated by P&V. I've never read something so bleak yet unsentimental. Thank you for the recommendation. Your video just showed me a converstation between Krasz and Rushdie on 92nd SY that I didn't know it existed!

i watched the film in parts like a miniseries while doing the dishes, it's breathtaking like his other work. let me know what you think of The Melancholy of Resistance. i browsed thru Krasz's other works, they look like amazing reads

Satantango is gloriously dark. Loved it to bits. I just recently did a video on The Melancholy of Resistance - you should definitely give that book a shot as well!

Just discovered this book, GR led me here. Saw this video, am floored by how you compiled a book's atmosphere into video. My conclusion: Is there anything incredible that you haven't read? :D

Hi Crystal! Yeah seems more misses than hits lately tbh. Need to find more works like Satantango!

I read 'Satantango' a couple of years ago I found it very dark and strange. I bought at the same Krasznahorkai's novel 'The Melancholy Of Resistance' which I have not read. The novel 'Satantango' as I recall went nowhere, nothing made sense to me. Maybe I will someday plunge into 'The Melancholy Of Resistance'.

sometimes i'll get lost in a heavy style and lose track of what's going on or come to realize there isn't much going on, by design, it's those writers who can keep me reading in spite of that which i have a tendency to really like. mostly it's a fascination w/ how they arrive at their technique

I suppose I read for the story-the beginning, the middle and the end. I like plot development. I like to read something that has a conclusion. When I read 'Satantango' nothing made sense/it was nightmarish world. I remember that scene in the novel the girl walking dragging herself down a muddy road during a storm at night and finally collapsing at the tavern door-I just remember this novel being bewildering. peace

Great book. At the begining it was a little confusing and kind of boring because of the exageration of the characters. I mean, I felt that they were a little bit forced. So I tried a different perspective, like imagining it was a teatrical book. That worked for me, specially with the little girl and the speech of Irimias.

Great strategy, works. Are you going to brave the film?

Those inserts at the beginning are so obnoxious.

@@PaperBird It didn't ruin the video, which I really appreciate existing at all. But I don't know that it is a technique that really works with this sort of content. So thanks.
