NOTE: We only realized at the end that we watched the theatrical version, not the director's cut.

Luc Besson had plans to do a sequel film rather like that, but couldn't get studios to bite on it for some reason. He re-tooled the screenplay into the film 'Columbiana' with Zoe Saldana, which could be considered a kind of 'spiritual' sequel.

Tony was likely a man of his word -- he lived by a code. He truly believes he is better than a bank. He was just looking out for Leon (and then Mathilda). Leon was like a child in a sense.

Well said. I really don't get how many of these reactors think Tony wouldn't have given the money to Leon if he asked, and assumed he was always like getting over on him. I never saw it like that - As said he's got a code and considered Leon like family to look out for.

Tony was a TRUE FRIEND, don't mistake otherwise. Leon needed someone to help him with things, for example, he can't read and might not can write. Chances are, Leon was bad with money but Tony was a great Business man and could take care of Leon's finances. He gave Leon what he needed monthly to live off. Leon was not about the "High Life" or "Fancy Things", he was just a common folk kind of guy. Hence his living areas. Mathilda is far to young to handle the money Leon left her. Tony holding onto it was a safer place then a Bank. Banks get robbed, only those with a true Death Wish would DARE to try and rob Tony. Tony will look after her, more then she will ever know. After all, Mobsters and Killers have an style to maintain so being all soft isn't going to do it. Chances are, Tony has eyes on her and wherever she goes and when she reaches the age and shows she can handle money wisely like Leon would want her to do, Tony will hand it all over to her, or whoever follows his footsteps if he dies before hand. Many people are to quick to see Tony as a bad guy but he isn't. He took a hell of a beating and then was most likely threaten that what happen to him will be even worse for his wife, or kid, maybe grandkid. I bet it break his heart to give Leon up but he had to protect his bloodline first and foremost. Who wouldn't?
@stang5755

VERY well said. I don't get how these reactors get a vibe that Tony was getting over on Leon the whole time - As said he didn't really spend/use much of the money he made and Tony was indeed looking out. Tony might question a bit but if Leon really wanted his money he'd get it for him. Besides regarding Leon like family, Tony is quite well-known and operates by a code; he just wouldn't be underhanded like that.

I don't think Tony was lying to Leon about his money! If he, Leon, came to find out, Tony would be dead meat! Stealing from a hitman is a death sentence! The fact that they had to beat him to extract information and that he paid for Mathilda's expenses and school until she gets 18 when he will give it to her all! Mathilda is rich set for life! In all of those criminal lives he took, Leon saved one innocent life in the end! Such a philosophical movie!!!
@barrycohen311
@barrycohen311 4 месяца назад
I agree with you. I 'm half Italian here. The Italian Mafia had some strict codes about not burning your own people. Plus as you said- Leon could have asked for all his money at any time, and if Tony refused he would be dead meat, quick, fast, and in a hurry.

@russellward4624
@russellward4624 4 месяца назад
Of course he's lying. Banks don't get robbed and even if they do your money is insured. Leon can't count, can't read. He has nomidea how much money he has and he's never getting it. Tony doesnt give it to Matilda like he asked either. He gives her a couple bucks. How's that going to help her?
@MysticalJessica
@MysticalJessica 4 месяца назад
@@russellward4624 Well you are forgetting that in the 90's a 100$/month was a lot more than today! Plus Mathilda goes back to school. In America schools are expensive, someone is paying for it. Not her for sure! About the bank, I don't think he could put all that money in the bank anyways because it was dirty. It would attract too much attention. And Tony is not all wrong about banks not to be trusted because they can still go into bankruptcy and that's how the Abbas lost all their money! The end where Tony gets emotional and scolds Mathilda for even thinking of becoming a "cleaner" says it all. Why would he even bother when if his intention was to take all the money for himself he could just kick her out and be done with it! But instead he lost his cool because he felt bad for Leon, maybe blaming himself and Mathilda for Leon's death but while wanting to respect Leon's wishes. Look I searched the internet to find what the producers and director meant and all I can find is debates that go on to this day so maybe that was done intentionally to keep us thinking forever but this movie takes a bit inspiration from Lolita and Count of Monte Cristo and artistically speaking if Mathilda doesn't get anything, it ruins the story. Can you imagine how not famous the story of Count of Monte Cristo would be if he didn't get anything at the end?! I think Dumas wouldn't even bother writing it that way and he didn't because it would suck!
@MysticalJessica
@MysticalJessica 4 месяца назад
@@barrycohen311 I never thought it any other way but in these reaction channels I am finding this take on it for the first time. I don't know, I always felt this part was clear in the movie but why do people take it this way... The signs are all there... Plus I wouldn't think this is a great movie if Mathilda gets nothing! It would be as if Count of Monte Cristo for example escapes prison and ends up as a beggar in the streets! I don't think we would've even heard of Count of Monte Cristo if it was written that way! It wouldn't even have been named that just like this movie. It's called Leon the Professional not Leon the Dummy!
@leniobarcelos1770
@leniobarcelos1770 4 месяца назад
I think a lot of people who watch this movie misunderstand Tony. He's not being dishonest with Leon or trying to keep Leon's money for himself. He means what he says, which is that he acts as Leon's private bank that Leon can come to whenever he needs to withdraw his money. He also says at the end that he's also hurt about Leon's death and he does end up doing as Leon asked by giving Mathilda Leon's money, which he didn't have to. He doesn't give it to her all at once because she's 12. But little by little.
@douglascampbell9809
@douglascampbell9809 4 месяца назад
You have to remember Tony is a made man in the mafia. While Tony has Leon's money 'like a bank' If Leon had asked he would have turned over all the money. As a made man his word is his bond. Without his good reputation he's finished. Besides where is he going to put it? In an actual bank that will ask about his employment. In the bank it would expose him to the Gov for tax purposes. Tony is really the best option for someone who can't read and wants to keep a low profile to avoid the police.

Jean Reno also did a similar kind of great film - (one that I've never seen "anyone" I watch react to yet either!) - it is mainly set in Japan though, and called, "Wasabi" (2001) - let's just say that he was a little bit of a violent French cop in it, a man with a certain past - also a past with a woman with who he could never forget about. Memories from that past come forwards in time and he finds out something unexpected . . . As always though - just expect all hell to break loose when Jean is in the starring role - lol . . . Luc Besson wrote a follow up script called Mathilda and his idea was to wait until Natalie Portman was middle aged and show her after spending her life as the best unknown cleaner. However he used parts from this script to film Columbiana which he produced. In this excellent and highly recommended film the female cleaner part was played by Zoe Saldana and it launched her career before Guardians of the Galaxy. Columbiana is well worth watching, as are some other Luc Besson projects La Femme Nikita (or the USA version Point of No Return aka The Assassin starring Brigit Fonda) about an organisation that trains cleaners. Also there's Lucy (2014) Anna (2019) and one that is just a beautiful film not like his usual killing stuff, titled The Big Blue. You've probably watched some of his hit movies already like The Fifth Element, The Transporter and of course Taken, Taken2, Taken 3 etc Valerian and the city of a thousand planets, it's a long list with lots of TV series as well. Try a few more of Luc's stories on your channel, you won't be disappointed , cheers !

It's an Aglaonema, it'll be fine in the shade. The frost however will kill it.

Gary Oldman asks the guy, "Do you like Beethoven?" and then shoots everyone in the apartment. A few years later he played Beethoven in an interesting movie about him called Immortal Beloved that no one ever talks about.

Again with the crappy apartment comment on this classic.. Rent that apartment today 😅 I'd say at least 5-7 grand a month.

Leon can't read and doesn't have any kind of employment so he can't use a bank without the IRS wondering how he would have so much money and doesn't have to pay taxes so it's a bonus.

11:15: He's not trying to kill her in her sleep because she's a burden. It's a reflex. He's "sleepwalking". Look at the scene again and you'll see him suddenly wake up before he pulls the trigger.

I can appreciate the film from a cinematic standpoint, but I'm not a fan of the child becoming part of his assassin life, and that scene where she wanted to sleep with him was the last straw for me. Some call it 'edgy', I call it "no thanks".

It's definitely a pedo-fantasy, written and directed by a pedo about the child he was molesting at the time.
@MrVvulf

Luc Besson is a pedo himself, so it's not surprising. He "officially" started dating Maïwenn when she was 15 and he was 29. They met when she was 12... She gave birth to their daughter when she was 16.

I don't find it 'edgy' or wrong. It's endearing and innocent, in my opinion, and nothing inappropriate happens.

@@Marjolein26264 They were about to have them sleep together but decided at the last minute not to do it. Disgusting but typical of Hollyweird. They are very much into the pedo shit. I guess it isn't edgy to some because they have become so desensitized, especially now days with all the hyper-sexualization of children in our pathetic society.

@@Marjolein26264 By the way, what exactly is "innocent and endearing" about a 8/9 year old that wants to have sex with a 40 some year old man?.......

You could edit the title. The name of the movie is The Professional. Not, “Leon: The Professional”

Tony was taking advantage of Leon. Leon didn't kill him because he had no other options, no other skills and Leon was illiterate as well. Tony could have dropped a dime on him have him arrested or killed by the mafia as they were the ones that got him out of Italy when Leon got in trouble in Italy. Tony was a capo, the local mob boss.
