It is a Yamaha Subkick which is a microphone constructed like a speaker wired backwards mounted inside of a drum shell. It is able to capture low frequencies that a regular microphone cannot. Usually the Subkick is used in conjunction with a regular microphone (like the one in that porthole next to it) in order to record a more full bass drum sound.
