About 3 months ago now, the Co-Creator of Rick & Morty Justin Roiland decided to reach out to the L.A. BEAST with a proposition. Noticing that the LA BEAST has yet to take on any sort of MRE (Meal Ready To Eat) challenge, he decided to CHALLENGE the Beast to consume 3 Vietnam Era Mre's that are roughly 50 plus years old. As someone who has consumed REALLY OLD food and drink items from the past, the LA BEAST accepted Justin's Challenge. After doing further research, and watching fellow youtuber's review these really old MRE's, the beast started to get a little bit nervous consuming something so old, but today for the sake of Human Science, here we go...
(Note: These Vietnam Era Mre's are pretty rare and hard to come by, so for the sake of preserving history, the L.A. BEAST decided to start his mre process by trying just one. The other two can be used for future video reviews, or I will return them back to Justin & maybe he can try them out!!)

My grandfather was drafted on his wedding day. He was in Nam from 68-69, he told me they were given C-rations which were from ww2. I love this video because he said the best meal was the spaghetti. He died of Agent orange related cancer in 2016, followed by his wife to Liver cancer in 2020. My grandad would have loved this video. 💙

While I was not in Vietnam era, we had similar. The candy chocolate disk we called a John Wayne bar and they were high-value snacks. If you put the sugar into the creamer packet and roast it on a stove, you get what we called 'ranger cookies' which are not bad, but also not that great. Still. And that vacuum sealed pack from Oregon Freeze Dry (97321) was made in my home town when I was a kid and live about 2 miles from that plant. Thanks for the memories Skip!

This meal was one of the most sought after in C-rations. It was added to the menu pretty late in the C-ration game, C-rats were not bad but definitely better hot than cold. The downside was humping the meals but eating the food lightened your load. The metal cans could make noise so we packed them in our spare sox. They left a lot of trash that would tell the enemy where we had been if it wasn’t disposed of properly.

Even my father - an actual Vietnam vet - was amused. :) FYI, the way they pack these things is amazing so I'm not at all surprised that it was not only edible but serviceable. That actually looked like a half-decent meal, all things considered. Great job as usual and it's kinda nice that you got to actually ENJOY yourself this time around. Usually you're either igniting your mouth with spicy shit or eating food that a starving hobo wouldn't touch. :)

I have twice now, a c ration from the Korean War and a lrp from Vietnam... the c rat made me sick as the powdered milk was bad ... its a really odd and funny feeling when you consume foods that are older then you.. Exp when they don't taste like what your use to.. The white stuff on the chocolate is either fat bloom or sugar bloom. It's just crystalized fat and/or sugar and completely harmless. You may sometimes see it even on fresh chocolate.

My dad had a ton of these that he got from a surplus center. We used to eat them on camping trips. My gramps (his dad) is a Nam vet. Spaghetti is definitely the best one. Stay away from anything Mexican. They’re edible, but they don’t taste great at all. A lot of them are made to stop you up as well. Plenty of them come with gum (though they may be from later on). The gum is meant to be chewed when you have a bathroom available. It will make you shit unbelievably violently, so beware.

Oddly enough this is probably one of the safest videos he’s done. MRE’s are made to last haha. So I’m not surprised at all by the result. My dad served in Vietnam and his take was always, “looks like shit but tastes pretty decent, the worst we trying to boil water during Monsoon season.”

Simple, yet effective food science in play here. All water removed + good pasteurizing to kill all pathogens + perfectly-sealed package = not a chance for it to go bad. Military rations are packaged with more extreme measures than usual food rations, since they need to stay good for very long periods of time (military stuff is always serious businesses, so you can expect top-quality processing and packaging, especially if the biggest military budget in the planet's paying for it). It's most likely the spaghetti was freeze-dried to remove all water, then the whole thing was pasteurized after packaged, to kill all pathogens, which is why it lasted for as long as the package stays sealed (it won't last forever, because the package itself will eventually wear out, but it definitely lasts more than 50 years). And, yeah, the cookie with the white spots was most likely good as well. Chocolate sometimes "blooms" when stored in cold conditions, as the sugar and/or fat gets out of the mix. However, once mixed back up (once you start munching on it, for example), it will taste as good as usual.

In 2001 I was in Infantry OSUT in Fort Benning and we were doing a week-long bivouac. I ate nothing but MREs for days at a time. We camped at this area and I leaned up against a tree to take a dump. We left and came back 3 days of torrential rain later and that turd was still stuck to the tree. It was like brown plaster.

The white specks on that other chocolate was just a sugar bloom. It's totally safe. It's kind of like what happens if you leave a protein bar or candy bar by a window (in the wrapper) where it gets hot and when you open it later, it's discolored and weird looking.

My stepdad was in Vietnam as well. I didn't have Emery's at that point they were called C rations. He would always tell me stories about the bartering system between cigarettes and toilet paper that would come in the rations.
