You say your not an expert feather sticker ! But, in my personal view ,your a heck of a lot better than loads of so called experts who review knives and are the worst at feather sticking I have seen ..I think your content is brilliantly put together and your honest , thorough, you have a lot of experience and your entertaining, so for me that makes you as professional as any expert... God bless you and your family and happy camping 🏕 🙏 😊 and happy new year to you and your family 👪..thanks for the hard work you put into the channel... lee

I appreciate the safety tips while batoning. I've seen MANY videos on RU-vid about bushcrafting knives, processinging wood for fires, feather-sticking (You could spend an entire rainy Saturday just watching "feather-stick making" on RU-vid) Yours was the first I've seen telling you which direction the blade should be, thumb on the pommel.... thank you!

Thank you very much. I've seen too much dangerous use of knives on RU-vid. I thought I would explain what I was doing so people can think about it when they are using their own knives. Take care my friend and thanks for watching 👍

Very cool video Wade. The saber grind GNS performed flawlessly. Nice demo on the wood splitting and pot hook. I’ve got 3 LT Wright ‘s. My GNS is probably like 7 years old. It’s the Pout House SRO model (Dave Canterbury) in a Scandi. One of my favorites and most used knife. Thanks for sharing your video and look forward to seeing the next episode. Both really good knives can’t really fault either one of them. The main difference is the genesis has a rounder neutral handle. The GNS has more of a contoured handle. It’s just your preference. Both a slightly different blade design as well. I have both I couldn’t decide lol thanks very much for watching my friend 👍

I've had this same knife for three years and really like it. I like the sabre grind on the thicker blade stock. If you want a thinner blade that's a great slicer and all around great camp knife try the LT Wright Bushcrafter HC. I've had that for a couple of years and it's become my favorite. Enjoyed the video, thank you. Thumbs up from me.

Awesome review!! It's great seeing actual hard use of a great tool!. Very intuitive and great execution of the skill sets for fire prep. Heard so much about L.T. Wright knives, read a lot of reviews of guys demonstrating this and that, how it works for this or that. But seeing how you were able to show its function properly was just refreshing. Really enjoyed the video and actually subscribed! Looking forward to owning my first LTW blade!! Awesome, awesome stuff.!

Dropping the line!! Picked up the L.T. Wright GNS in the scandi grind....an absolute awesome blade....the ergos are so spot on..it just feels amazing!! It handles like a beast. Feather sticking no problem ...hot spots ..so far I've not felt any...I just love this little knife. And I've paired the gns with the uberleben pro fire steel... I highly encourage checking those out...really nice fire steels. Fall is around the corner and I'm stoked about putting my gns through so grit and grime!!! Thanks so much for the video!! I found it super helpful and it really sealed the deal on my LT purchase...and possibly a few more!

Greetings Woodswalker. ... I've owned an LT Wright GNS for a couple years. Mine's also saber ground, but in 3V steel with drunken coffee bag micarta scales, fish eye bolts, brass lanyard tube and dangler sheath. It's my only saber ground knife. As you have, I also find it very capable at batonning. The sharpened spine is very useful for scraping and striking sparks. I much prefer the saber grind to a scandi, a full flat grind, or a hollow grind for a fire-making camp knife. For my money, some of Bark River's high convex grinds on general purpose knives are also in the running for all around EDC consideration. Within my battery of fixed blades, I consider the GNS to be a nearly ideal EDC woods knife. It excels at camp chores. It's certainly pointy enough should you need to defend yourself from belligerent mammals. In my opinion, if those mammals are bipedal, you haven't gotten far enough into the woods yet! The GNS doesn't have enough belly for me to consider it to be a field dressing knife for big game. I think the hollow grind with a nice belly comes into its own when performing that task. ... Incidentally, our Alaskan bull moose is the big brother in the clan with your Ontario moose and those tiny Maine moose. LOL. ... I own several small, traditional puukko style scandi ground knives and enjoy using them. But, I consider them to be rather specialized for woodcrafting in camp. If I carry one, it is in the pack for puttering around in camp, rather than in a place of honor on my belt where my GNS rides. ... I like a Silky 170mm Pocket Boy with fine tooth blade for hard wood, bone and antlers; the large tooth blade for conifers. ... I use a tub of Obenaufs LP to nourish and protect my leather. I apply it with my fingers. When I'm finished, both my hands are usually a bit "oily". Some of the coffee bag burlap on my GNS handle is exposed from the grinding when it was shaped by LT's crew. So I thoroughly rub down the handle with my Obenaufs wet hands before washing them. I like the protection, feel, grip and appearance that process does for the handle. A quick strop, and its ready for another walk in the woods. ... I'm enjoying and learning from your videos which I recently discovered and now subscribe to. Thanks for posting them. Til next time ... ...

Thanks for watching and for the great comment my friend. I do love coffee bag micarta scales very nice. You know your knives that's clear. I agree about Scandis , they can be quite fragile. I've just started using a Scandi in 3v and I must say I'm pretty impressed, so further testing is required lol. Take care and thanks for the sub👍

I much prefer the sabre grind over the scandi for durability and versatility. The Scandi grind is great with wood and that's it. The sabre grind is better for food prep, opening tins and much easier to sharpen than the scandi.

I'm no fan of battoning. My office jockey hands tire fast and my wrists ache when I whack the knife. So I prefer to use a hatchet to process down to ca 1/2 to 1 inch thickness. But from there one I use the knife too, since I perceive it to be faster and safer. That is one cool knife you have there, btw. Unfortunately it would be way too expensive to buy from overseas (I'm in Switzerland). Shipping an taxes add up!

@@Woodswalker1965 as you own a real Skookum bushtool, would you say it’s Performance is a lot better then your other knives? Is there something really special about the Skookum that makes it that much better?
@Woodswalker1965
@Woodswalker1965 2 года назад
The Skookum is a special knife because of its heritage. Mors Kochanski had a direct hand in the design and Rod Garcia executed it beautifully. At the end of the days it's just a knife and many excellent copies have been made. A outstanding one is made by Robert Evans in the U. K. The GNS is a Woodlore copy, another classic design by Ray Mears. The GNS probably performs much like the original. They all work well my friend, have fun out there. 👍🔪

I have the GNS with the scandi grind and 3v steel. I am often wondering if I should have choose the saber grind. The 3v steel I love, it takes a very fine edge and will hold for a long time. If I strop the blade regularly I don’t have to sharpen it. It’s my first cpm steel knife and the only thing you need to be aware of is to not get the edge too fine as it will obviously roll, it’s just worth mentioning because it surprises me how easy it gets this fine edge. Great video.

Woodswalker 1965 To be honest, I think I have sharpened my knife only once so I am probably not on the best steel of this knife. Unfortunately, I dropped it on a rock once and ,at first, I believed that I had lost my very fine tip (the tip of the tip) only to realize it had rolled: thank you 3v.

Great job friend🙂 i think the GNS is about the only I haven’t owned lol. Never had a saber from them either. I’ve had a genesis, camp MUK, Lagom, Boat tail Scandi, and a 2nd gen native survival from LT. All had to be sold for medical issues in the family. My favorite of them all was the Lagom. You really do a great job of narrating the videos👍🏻 I just recieved an adventure sworn Mountaineer the other day. I did a one stick fire video with it. Didn’t say one word😐 it would be great for some tips on making videos. Glad you like your knife so much friend🙂 stay warm

I bought my GNS scandi with orange liners a month ago here in Australia . All in all a good solid knife and happy to have it on my belt . The thing is , I'm a bit disappointed with the quality . The handle pins have gaps , the lanyard hole has sharp and ragged egdes and out of the box the knife was no where as sharp as a Mora . I want to buy the Genises when one becames available , but I'm a bit wary now .

Wade, this is a good, honest and thorough review...well done! This knife reminds me of the knife I built for my own use, it started as a scandi grind and I deepened the grind and made it more like a 'scandi vex sabre', the blade on my knife has a more acutely radiused sweep on the first 1.5" from the tip...then a straight cutting edge back to the handle. Typically I like a sweeping edge/ belly on my blades for the full length of the cutting edge and, like you I prefer 4" or less. blade length...much more power and control :)

A fan of the simple Mora, putting handles on blanks,(mad fun:) I recently purchased a Viking blade blank from Helle. Laminated carbon. Absolutely love it. I rarely leave my own woods here, which is a nice blend of trees, but where i camp, there are tons of softwoods. Those dead bottom branches are perfect for me. I rarely need to baton. When i do, I break out my Gerber Strongarm. (The one knife they got right lately:) Love the vids, wade. Thanks for making them. This is a very nicely executed knife review. No doubt that scandies are a real pleasure to use, I will always use them, but the edge is simply not as strong as a saber grind. The quality of the steel and the handle are a biggest priority to me then having the right geometry for the task. There will always be compromises when it comes to geometry. I think you summarize it well that it is a good all around camp knife with good versatility. I may eventually upgrade my knife and will put L.T. Wright on my shortlist. I am also considering a nice Bark River. May come down to which one I am more confident to effectively sharpen in the field.

@@luketcg Even before the pandemic I had some things come up. Illness in the family. I haven’t sent it in yet. I’ll have to wait until life stabilizes. The saber works OK. I think I’d go with the convex edge. The saber’s strength is in splitting but the convex is universally good.

Did enjoy the video, and liked the knife too. I'm a fan of sabre and high scandi grinds. They work well for what i do. I do tend to drop the points more on my knives to give it more of a spearpoint, but maybe i should just man up and get one like yours that's ready to go. Just got my GNS in 3V steel today. I think it will beat out my Bark River Bravo 1 Lt as my favorite. Squinch bigger handle and just a bit grippier. But, I got the convex grind and did not expect the large secondary bevel. I see that its there for edge strength because the blade is thinner than the Bark river, but I don't baton so it has to go to create a real convex. I see some serious waterstone time coming!

Hello my friend. Having owned the GNS for over a year and it being my main belt knife over the last several months I can say I have no issues with it. The handle is comfortable for me, it works great for me. As far as Scandi vs Saber I have no preference. The Saber is more robust I will say that for sure. I find that once you get using any grind, saber, scandi, flat, convex you adjust for it and it becomes very natural. Hope that helps maybe I'll chat about that in a future video. Take care, Wade👍
