It's funny how Courtney changed her views on material things and showing off. She's always name dropping, showing her designer shoes, how she knows Elton John, Lindsey Lohan, etc. I wish Hole could have stayed like 90s Hole. I wish I could stay in my 90s hole too. I miss my youth.
Courtney made a lot of digs about PJ Harvey around this time because she's insanely jealous of her talent and probably hated the fact that Kurt was a big fan of hers. Love how she turns her back to the crowd hen she's playing pretend guitar
Well, Courtney was right about PJ not having experienced most of what she wrote in Dry/ROM, but I've always suspected that CL was a bit jealous of PJ because Kurt was such a fan and well, Dry/Rid of Me are great albums. Maybe jealousy is not the word, but competitiveness. Courtney is a PJ fan actually.
@@msantos6290 And? PJ never claimed she experienced everything in those albums. One does not need to personally experience something to write from different perspectives or create narratives
PJ Harvey should NEVER be compared to Courtney Love. Polly is in a different league. She has an exceptionally beautiful voice, she is a multi instrumentalist, she writes subtle and complex music, and is more naturally beautiful, talented and cooler that Courtney Love will ever be.
Courtney love l'a dit à sa manière, mais c'est certain qu'elles n'ont pas le même style et je pense que courtney n'a jamais prétendu être une star du rock 😉 Elle est dans un autre style de jeu que PJ tout simplement
Courtney's so funny, and it was really funny when Eric tried not to laugh at what she said about PJ Harvey. Also, L7's such a badass band. So energetic onstage and hilarious when offstage. Especially what Donita said at 6:32 :D
The funny thing about that is that PJ Harvey was always just PJ Harvey. There is no greater expression of feminism than a woman just being who she is in spite of what people think she should be. Courtney love was always reaching for the next "something". She was never genuine. I guess that's the nature of addicts. If she had to try to bring someone else down to lift herself up, she would.
Courtney is 10.000% herself! Strong but also vulnerable in her voice at the same time, so unique! She could be sexual on stage without degrading herself by any means, fully be there and be in your face. But PJ Harvey is just a different artist, the music is in no way connected.
We don’t know if she had this perspective at the time, but I believe PJs career has been feminist. She has embodied being a musician as opposed to a female musician. Why shouldn’t a woman be considered a musician/scientist/astronaut as opposed to female musician/female scientist/female astronaut. Even if well intended, that categorization can end up undermining women.
The nature of addicts? Whoa there! Don't insult drug addicts by associating them with Courtney Love. Her personality disorders are 100% her; nothing to do with addiction. Agree with you about PJ Harvey though. She's a real artist, the real deal.
PJ wouldn’t need any conversation with Courtney Love and probably wouldn’t want to...There is one with class, a great knowledge of music, the other is pretentious, vulgar and so egomaniac, she has nothing to teach to anyone. I of course love the Breeders
erm....maybe that's why polly has had the endurance that she has because she refused to be lumped in with everyone? for the very same reason you used to get pissed at the press for lumping you with riot grrl.
I love L7 and I love that it was totally intentional. Also, don't tell me L7 wouldn't approve this "message" and their only critique would be "you couldn't find a slobbier moment than that?!!"
@@guadalupeodiard9320 Considering the absolute mess that Courtney made out of her life, should we really be taking her nonsense seriously? One can be whatever they want without being forced to subscribe to a label that pigeonholes you
PJ and Courtney both are in a league of their own. They've both wrote critically acclaimed albums, that are amazing. They constantly reinvented themselves and have put so much effort in their work. I won't be surprised if there's ever any musicians that come out of the woodwork soon that say they were inspired by these female rockers from the 90s. These women could kick ass. They rocked just as hard as those grungy guys back then. Breeders, L7 and plenty of others included.
Spot on! I think Courtney really is a key figure in a new way women fronted bands. She is so unapologetic and full in your face, I think its great! I think she has a very unique and great voice, cuts right to the heart. PJ Harvey is good but Courtney is the reaaaaal deal! Amazing performer and songwriter as well! Just have to listen to recent band White Lung to be remembered how hugely influential Courtney still is! I think there is zero point comparing Nirvana and Hole anyway, very different bands and intent. Still don't get how PJ Harvey calls an album let England shake, what a crap title. Next shes going to kiss the Queens feet probably....
Are you guys serious? Have you not noticed PJ Harvey’s many many many excellent albums? And ongoing. Perhaps you could compare rid of me to something by hole, but that’s where it ends and musical genius continues. I’m sorry Courtney got hooked into drugs and all the other unfortunate stuff, but she simply does not go anywhere close to PJ Harvey in terms of her overall oeuvre
Philipp Boetcher you are an idiot. That’s one of the best albums of this Century. Kissing the Queen’s feet? 😂😂😂Wow... You are officially disqualified from making any comments about PJ Harvey from here on.
I love how Courtney speaks about PJ harvey as a kid. I think PJ Harvey is extreme feminist even though she doesn´t say it. Its pretty obvious and Courtney is right about that but musically PJ Harvey exceeds everyone. Her 2011 album Let England Shake is considered her Magnus Opus almost 20 years after her debut. She continues to slay.
Easily. PJ is a genius/goddess/genius!!! I absolutely adore her and all of her efforts. My personal favorite is 1998's Is This Desire. But her genius is beyond compare & her body of work is stellar.
I dont think she is a feminist. She clearly takes exception to being pigeonholed even as a woman. The term feminist brings with it a whole series of connotations that I don't believe PJ Harvey subscribes to.
While 23 is obviously a pivotal age, Courtney was in some states of arrested development throughout her 20's through her 40's and in various states of altered consciousness. For her to state PJ 'doesn't know what she's talking about' is really fucking rich coming from Courtney. Some people are 'feminists' in their own right and absolutely don't have to wear the label, fly the flag and advertise it. The art is all perspective and relative to the cause of feminism.
I agree Courtney talks b,s, and probably was jelous of pj Harvey because she knew Kurt was going to ask her if she wanted to tour with nirvana, Kurt did ask her and PJ Harvey said no and apparently that made Kurt like her even more , it's mentioned in the book by Everett true, Nirvana the true story 👍
@@crystalmonroy9111 yes Courtney was also jelous of Kristen pfaff because Kurt Gav her a copy of his favourite book perfume by Patrick suskind and look what ended up happening to Kristen
Yeah okay, everybody relax. Courtney has said many times that she really likes PJ Harvey. We all know that Courtney and Kurt loved to talk shit all the time, just for people’s reaction.
Tee hee, Polly's tone in the first clip ("I'm a musician"... etc) suggests that the interviewer was asking her stupid questions. She sounds quite annoyed.
It's not that, it was Polly very first interview for french tv and both her and the interviewer had been cornered to do this "women in rock" shit by the record label and the broadcasting channel.
Women aren't supposed to make these messes on stage anymore. They should all be like the paramour chick and sky Ferreira....I miss this kind of music. Evolution sucks.
Courtney Love was commenting on how Harvey's work is inherently feminine even if she doesn't consider herself a "feminist", by definition. She was joking. Unfortunately, Love has always been one of those people who have been misunderstood because she says true things in a crass way. Courtney Love has been vocal about being a huge PJ fan since 1993.
yeah I have heard Pretty On The Inside and I based my judgement mainly on that album. Our tastes just differ. I know Hole was about her 5th band and that she was better known than Kurt when they first met. But come on, the succes that Nirvana had was a gateway for every band from that area. And the fact that 'Pretty' sold more than Bleach doesn't say much, she already had a lot of connections. She was already an actress. He was stlil a hillbilly punk at that point.
Riot Grrrls = followers of The Women of Rock - these Sirens, these Goddesses... it is a movement. Some of us listened to them and were INSPIRED by them. The Breeders get it totally. Courtney Love.. HOLE 'nother story. L7... they just don't get a fuck.
I consider it more impressive that P.J. Harvey refused to open for Nirvana when Kurt asked her to than it was when Kurt refused Axl Rose's invitation for Nirvana to open for Guns N' Roses. Even if she wanted to open for Nirvana, and maybe she didn't, who would want to risk being subjected to a backstage lesson in what a female entertainer is allowed to believe from the likes of Courtney Love? Actually, that might have been Hope Sandoval. PJ Harvey at least turned Dave Grohl down when he asked her to sing for Nirvana though. lol.
suhijo I know that. I have heard that Kurt personally asked her to open for Nirvana when they met. She had kind things to say about him, but if she did refuse, I think she turned Dave down for similar, personal reasons. I don't know.
I always have a hard time hearing Courtney speak, I can't think of her different than impossible to talk to and I believe that is exactly how she wants to be seen
Not to mention how smart Courtney has been to start Hole and marry Kurt and everything. She is more talented as an entrepreneur than as a musician or actress
I like PJ and the Breeders about 10 times more than Hole. I can't believe how Kurt could ever have said he wanted to quit his own band and join Hole. I mean come on Hole? L7 is much better than Hole. They are so overrated as a band. Courtney was just locally known as that chick from Hole but worldwide everyone knew here as a Cobain before she really got succesful with her own band. The music industry sucks that's my point. Good bands disappear and less original bands take their place
@Garouix Yes, it is Angers 1993. It matches the audio. They played a festival there with Les Thugs (AFTER Hole!) and some other bands. There is an average audience recording of it, I don't know about a video. It's a good show, as most Hole shows were in 1993! Have you heard the Phoenix Festival 93 show? /watch?v=052zRPA0B1k It's great!
Has anyone noticed how Hole are all playing their guitars right-handed? I saw a video where they were all playing them left-handed. I find that very strange.
Most people comment on Courtney, out of all the bands. Shows how interesting and captivating she is to them. (I actually love all these bands. Huge fan of Courtney.
Courtney Love is not very smart at all, how she dare to put down PJ Harvey just because she has different opinion, that's stupid thing to do. Anyway everybody knows PJ Harvey is way better Artist than Courtney Love.
+Jorge Camargo Courtney never cared about artistry so PJ's chops were irrelevant to her. It was about putting down any other female artists while vying for a position in the spotlight. That scene was created in celebration of women who wanted to do things on their own terms, but I guess Courtney wasn't for it.
Ok so what. Are you lecturing me about Courtney's life or what is the sense of this discussion? What I meant was that I just don't view her as a musician in heart and soul like Kurt. Her priority was recognition and fame and yeah she flopped a couple of times with her movie but was still aiming for a career and was eager to make friends of statue so she could get where she wanted to go (blowjob for contract- type of person maybe?). She was just more into the glamour (don't mean to piss you off)
