it makes sense why he wanted to change his name to ritchie valens.. it was to create worldwide appeal and lets be honest. Valenzuela does sound foreign especially in the 50s.

Lou Diamond is hot and acted fabulously, but really, Esai Morales did an underrated terrific job in this movie, as it was start in his bad guy roles in many top shows today

What does this have to do with Mexico? Sounds like he is prejudice against Mexicans Both Bob and Richie don't like the name that Bob Kuhn gave him Valens He rather keep it Valenzuela

Unfortunately in the 50s it was hard to get by as an ethnic. Hell even white folks like Italian, Irish, Polish weren't treated well. Valens was his professional name, which a lot of people do. But like Bobbo says, could've been worse.
