The Spanish Inquisition has left many of the descendants of the Spanish Jews who were forced into conversion with a search for identity and a longing for recognition within the Jewish community. This is a story of one young woman’s quest for identity and the triumphant seizing of her heritage as she embraces the song that after many generations still sings in her heart, “Shema Yisrael…”
English:
verse 1: So many years have gone by that the song has been hidden.
So many years have gone by since the Spanish Inquisition.
So many years have gone by that the Hanukkiah has been hidden
in a box with the song of my heart...
chorus: My heart sings, "Hear O Israel, Ad-nai is our G-d, Ad-nai is One!
Cut off from my Land, cut off from my people, but never cut off from my G-d!
He was, He is, and He will be!
verse 2: So many years have gone by that the Hanukkiah has been hidden.
So many years have gone by and one candle branch is missing.
So many years have gone by...it's the shamash that is missing...
just as I feel has been the song of my heart... (to chorus)
verse 3: So many years have gone by, but now I'm remembering.
So many years have gone by, but I'm not forgetting.
So many years have gone by, but now the Hanukkiah's no longer hidden...
So many died, but I'm alive!, singing my song... (to chorus)
