Barrios was inspired to write this piece in 1914 when he came across a Church where Bach's music was being played on the organ so he listened for a while. The "Andante Religioso" represents this part of the story. When the performance was over, Barrios leaves the serene ambiance of the Church and returns to the noise of the hurried and busy world. The Allegro Solemne depicts this, hence the stark contrast between the two movements.
Interestingly enough, the first movement was written later in 1938 and was initially dedicated to his wife Gloria. Barrios tagged it on as the opening of La Cathedral and performed it with this new arrangement in the later part of his performing career.
Soli Deo Gloria!
