La Grande Illusion is a 1937 French war film directed by Jean Renoir, who co-wrote the screenplay with Charles Spaak. The story concerns class relationships among a small group of French officers who are prisoners of war during World War I and are plotting an escape. The title of the film comes from the book The Great Illusion by British journalist Norman Angell, which argued that war is futile because of the common economic interests of all European nations. The perspective of the film is generously humanistic to its characters of various nationalities.
La Grande Illusion is regarded by critics and film historians as one of the masterpieces of French cinema and among the greatest films ever made. Orson Welles named La Grande Illusion as one of the two movies he would take with him "on the ark." Empire magazine ranked it #35 in "The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema" in 2010.

Illusion within an illusion within an illusion, filmed for on-screen illusion. Reminding us that the material world is a reflection of a 'true' state, which isn't the Hollywood nothing, but unity, wholeness and everything. Renoir and Kieślowski could film a man buying biscuits and find the spiritual backstory to it.

1937... So much has gone on over the years, and that's why we shouldn't complain about the times today😊

It is a great movie because it deals with the major issues of war, along with issues of society's class distinctions. It is a great movie because it was directed by the legendary Jean Renoir, who also co-wrote the great screenplay. All of the acting, performed by some of France's greatest actors, is outstanding. That's why :)

because it poked a finger the eye of the then civilized world with its divine right rulers and governments, and showed the brotherhood of humanity...black, white, jew, and gentile, english, french, german etc...forced to murder each other on demand of such rulers for sake of supposed patriotism to country instead of loyalty to humanity. Shows privileged military leaders from multigenerational military families co-habitating with lower class workers while realizing their loyal, honorbound long-dated ways will soon be obsolete. And it showed the effect of impotence as captured soldiers along with their elderly and crippled overseers do little more than wait helplessly. Only after escaping the symbol of obedience and "loyalty" (the camp) do the soldiers, a low class worker and a Jew, become friends and allies crossing borders and in the end finding happiness with a German widow and her family.
