At the Ecole Normale Supérieure in 1960, Julien Gracq gave a lecture entitled “Pourquoi la lit- térature respire mal.” Similar metaphors have been used repeatedly over the years to announce the demise of French literature. Pierre Jourde, novelist, critic and author of the highly controversial 2002 polemic, La littérature sans estomac (Prix critique de l’Académie Française), among many other works in various genres, will discuss the state of French literature in dialogue with Elisabeth Ladenson (Chair, French, Columbia) and Antoine Compagnon (French and Comparative Literature, Columbia and Collège de France).
