Gotta say over the last year an a half of actually taking my morning brew seriously, I have really appreciated your insights, honesty, and ability to communicate your findings in truly useful ways. You don't sugarcoat things or play into the hype of stuff. It will be a couple of years still until I upgrade from my modded out Gaggia to whatever my "endgame" machine and grinder will be, but reviews like this add tremendous value to the lexicon of coffee knowledge out here on the interwebs. I bought GS3 MP for home usage since 2016, upgraded the brew header once, besides that the only issue I had is the refill sensor inaccuracy at recent. No major issue with it. I own Rokect R58 before, GS3 is definitely the endgame machine if taken both brew quality and reliability into consideration. A friend of mine bought a Slayer Single head, leaking in 8 month and was repaired for 3 month😂He eventually sold Slayer and turn back to GS3 MP.

I'm not a barista, just someone who loves great coffee. I bought my GS3 MP fully decked in Wallnut, in late 2021, so I've had some decent time with it. Last year I also picked up an EG1 and suffice to say, that my current workflow revolves around 2x Weber glass caddies; I typically portion 17g into both and split single origins as needed. It's extremely consistent to the point I haven't touched my Acaia scale in a good while. In 30 secs, I've got a perfect cup to go. The steam wand is fantastic - the trick is just go full "on" and off. Don't bother trying to hold it while steaming, there's no need at all.

I have the GS3 MP and was torn between it and a Slayer. The internal tank won me over. I love my machine but I agree with your points about the paddle, the app and the water usage. My unit cost just shy of $9k with accessories. Your insights are dead on. That said, the machine is built very well and customer service is great! I would recommend it to anyone.

An honest review for a great machine with a very large price tag. No one can deny the workmanship in these machines but why don't they update the technology as the years go on the display looks like something from the 80s, I wouldn't turn one down but I couldn't pay that amount of money for one.

I bought a GS3MP about 2 months ago. Love it. The water diversion does not bother me as I intend to plumb it and I collect and process my own water. But the general niggles around the app and keypad are echoed. The electronic interfaces are like an afterthought. However Id like to think this machine will last as long as my last,... a 1980's lapavoni I used for over two decades. it still works.

Have really appreciated your thoughts on this. Earlier in 2022, I had my Mini modified for manual pressure (the mod done by Rick Bond and the team at Specht). In the back of my mind, I was thinking “why don’t you just buy a GS3?”… but it sounds like I would’ve been frustrated by the same shortcomings that you mentioned in this vid. I think it’s time LM gave the old gal a re-vamp!

I have owned a GS3 MP since 2018. before that, I owned an LS Dream T. It was a huge jump that was immediately clear even with pour pulls. I would forget how LM describes the machine. Sure, it is a legacy of design and function. However, I would describe the day-to-day more like a film camera. Those who enjoy the process, learning new things, and pushing limitations will find themselves at home. it is a machine that will inspire you to think differently. You could contrast the GS3 MP with a decent. One displays information but doesn't tell you what to do with it. The other gives you feedback and requires you to think. In terms of issues. The bypass water waste really bothers me. I knew this going in and I am now at peace with it. One of the small things that don't make sense is the screen. Over time, faded/dead pixels start to accrue. By over time, I mean within 3'ish years. For a machine of this price, I would expect it to be a non-issue for 5-10 years. The replacement screen is some $500+ which you can only buy in assembly form. That is a problem and a huge one at that. All in all, I am happy with the MP and enjoy using it. I look forward to what the modern GS3 could be.

I've got a GS3 MP that had dead pixels -- LCD screen is replaceable as sub assembly for a little over $100.

I make my own water. I start with RO/DI and then re-mineralize it. Wasting water is not something I’m interested in even entertaining. Plus, I love my E61 for the simple fact that parts are everywhere and I can fix anything on it before lunch so that no one misses their morning latte. I really appreciate this video and the very real look at the GS3. Thanks!

The water waste is definitely the biggest flaw, and having a Bianca I was surprised to see it wasted very little when it came to profiling. So it’s all just in the engineering. I do plan on doing a side by side with them, and looking deeper into the differences because I still do like shots from the GS3 better, even with what feels like the same control.

I own a 2017 MP3 with the conical valve and despite the usual maintenance, the machine runs flawlessly. Being on 220 V, I find it gets up to temperature much quicker than you mention. It is usable after a little bit more than 15 mins. The only real downsides to me are the volumes of the boilers which are slightly oversized for home use and the water waste. At the time, it was to my knowledge the only machine besides the Cremina that could do proper pre-infusion without being plumbed in. That said, I really love it but today, I'd buy a Micra and have it modded it with a slayer valve by Grafikus.

Great review. I have owned my GS three for six years. I powder coated it fire engine red and it looks bad ass. I agree about the use ability of the buttons, it’s horrific - like using a pc with dos!?! regarding your comment about the awkward position of the steam handle I move the wand over to the left so the handle is not in the way

I enjoyed your episode on the GS3 very much. I have 'the other' version, which I'd like to mention. I bought the GS3-AV, quite deliberately avoiding the MP version for a variety of reasons. I was more interested in faster workflow, repeatability, temperature control and the ability to do 'something else' while the coffee is extracting. Cafe-like workflow is quite possible with the AV, which it is not with the MP. Also the preinfusion/prebrewing function, if used, is very repeatable, as is the dosing. Push the button, you get exactly what you want - no oversight required. The result is much better workflow and super consistency. The shots produced are consistently great, every time. I understand the desire of many to fool around with brew pressures (the pump pressure is easily changed on the GS3 by quickly removing the left side panel), but this is not how I want to make espresso. Quick, repeatable, easy-to-clean, no significant amounts of wasted water, no annual rebuilding of the MP function. I totally enjoy the fantastic espressos the AV pulls, and feel no need to tinker 'with what ain't broke.' For a consumer like me, a precision AV is the only way to go. As you might have already guessed, I am a great aficionado of the KISS principle. The big thing with the GS3, to me (either version), is the high temperature precision of the saturated group. I think this system of temperature beats others hands-down, especially for pulling multiple shots back-to-back. I also think the build quality of the GS3 is much better than a lot of other machines lower priced. One other good feature about the GS3 is if you live in a major metropolitan area, you have access to maintenance and repairs from La Marzocco certified techs. Most of the lower-priced machines seem to require a lot of DIY, something that as I have gotten older, is more of a pain that it was.

@@ystebadvonschlegel3295 Not sure if this will help, but here goes: The AV uses water much more efficiently than the MP. Prebrewing is a feature of the AV, I don't think it is a feature of the MP (that function is implemented manually by using the Paddle). The AV uses a lot less water than the MP, so a tank fill lasts longer. AV functions are different than the MP. I believe all functions on the AV work regardless of whether tank or plumbed. Preinfusion, I believe requires the line pressure of being plumbed in (AV) but I haven't used it. Never felt the need for prewbrew (an AV function) which I tried, but prefer the taste not using it (I have zero issues with channeling, but that's a grinder issue).

Well for many that rebuilt and restore machines the one advantage any LM product has is its reliability, quality and durability - some of these newer machines don't seem built to last beyond 10 years but any LM product properly cared for could last 30/40/50 years

I have had a pretty positive experience with my linea mini. The app does suck BUT it is WAY better than it was a year ago. So I think they are moving in a positive direction.

So glad I got a Linda Micra. I was debating between GS3/MP and Micra and with these downsides, I think I made the right choice. The Micra works perfect for my needs - makes a perfect cup of espresso, consistently and with zero fuss.

Nice review, but this just further keeps me happy with my robot. It seems no matter the price point there isn’t an espresso machine without a flaw or issue. Each time I think about getting a semiauto machine, I get overwhelmed by choice and fear of making the wrong decision.

I chose the Rocket R91 over this one some years back.. none of the flaws, and repeatability (and programmable) shots. The steam power is soo impressive on these pro-sumer machines!

Yeah I’ve heard a lot about the Rocket R91, I need to get ahold of one in the future to try out. I feel like the Bianca does a lot too for half the price, so there’s options on the market that give the GS3 a run for it’s money.

The rest is pretty much bullet proof or very standard in a good way (as on the GS3 as well), and given the pricepoints on both they didnt hold back on materials. I guess with all machines, keep them serviced. Could be worth a video all on its own…

I have owned both the MP and I have just sold my AV version. Me selling them both says it all to be honest. I love LaMarzocco. However, as stated the buttons and screw age the machine vastly. The build quality is exceptional in comparison to other machines and these will work perfectly in any small cafe. Not just me making two to three per day. I had zero issues with the app and with its recent update it was even more versatile to use. I am looking at the Strada now. But I feel it might be absolute over kill. The slayer does not interest me because it has zero volumetric ability and being £9k in the UK it’s by far the most expensive. The ROCKET R9 one looks brilliant also. Apparently a new rocket machine will be announced next week.

Great review ! It s a solid machine, however I feel like it has a lot of flaws for the price asked. 40 minutes before the first shot is a lot of time for a home machine. I bet next year they ll come with a smaller and updated version of it, and then it ll be very appealing.

I believe that La Marzocco made a smart move by bringing the Micra on the market. This will allow them to now give the Mini and the GS3 a major overhaul. Personally, I think a Mini with a needle valve mod would be sick and the GS3 should definitely get a display upgrade. Not sure if the waste of water can be eliminated, but of course that would also be great!

Since you complain about the movement of the paddle, being too coarse or fast, I’d be truly interested in your take comparing the GS3 to the paddles on a Lelit Bianca v3 or even against LaMarzocco’s Linea Mini or Micra (with a flow control mod).

I've been following you for a few months now. After using bezzera matrix MN 1 year.. I felt it was time to upgrade. So because of you I was very interested in gs3 And I was exposed to machines with profile presser. In my research I found the rocket r9 one. And in the end I bought the r9. I am very very pleased with her, And it also has all the capabilities and even more than the gs3 - Mainly with repeatability. I'm very interested in - what you think about the rocker r9?

Nice review. Not a machine I would want at any price as I limit myself to 2 shots a day. I currently use a Flair 58 and on almost every shot I slightly adjust my pre-infusion and how I ramp up and down the pressure based upon how fast the water is entering and leaving the puck, which I have no idea about with this machine. I bet I could build a UI for the Decent that would emulate using a lever machine with real-time lever control.

You can get great shots on Flair 58, but to get that one perfect shot you have to get lucky. Repeatability is a huge problem.

I’m very satisfied with my GS3mp. No complaints about consistency, stability of temperature, and taste. My machine is almost 1.5 years, and the 13 months warranty has already gone. And now, one thing that makes me a kind of disappointed is the group head is getting dripped and brew pressure is falling down while its idle time. If someone had experience with such a problem, could you share with me some advice and technical tips if you rebuild it by yourself please? And where I could get a rebuild kit for this group head with conical paddle valve? Thank you in advance for your help

I’d recommend taking a look at the Sanremo YOU I did a comparison of the two as well, and also the Lelit Bianca V3, which I also think is a very solid machine with more features for less cash.

The water bypass was something I mentioned when you first had the GS3 on the bench. It is one of the reasons I sold my last one (I’ve had two GS3’s over the past 12 years) and replaced with a LMLM with a EMP gear pump mod from Rick (AKA Coffee Machinist) which solved the problem the GS3 has. He has also made a couple GS3 Av’s with EMP mods also which you can do volumetric or full manual. If Rick can do that, why can’t LM?

LM machines just last longer. That's the difference IMO. Personally, I'd go with the GS3 AV myself just so I have that extra convenience for times I really want to crush a rush, as it were.

The redirection valve used in the GS3 and the Synesso Hydra, made me stick with needle valve format on my Quick Mill Vetrano. If I ever want a more automated flow control workflow, I’ll look into the Dalla Corte Mina, with it’s iris valve, which also does not waste water.

I have currently Della Corte Mina for almost three months and decided to return it . I received machine with faulty pressure valve on steam boiler and 5 days ago had motorgear hall sensor failure twice so I’m returning the machine. I’m deciding now between Lelit Bianca v3 and Sanremo You

Would be really interested to your guidance on an upgrade-path from a niche or df64 (with mods :)). Would it be a Lagom, a df83, something else? And would that be worth it or just chasing fractional gains? Keep up the content, you deserve the success

I’ve had a Niche since Jan 2019 and now upgrading to Lagom P100. Seems like the only sensible upgrade from a 63mm conical is a titan flat. I’m still keeping the Niche because it’s an all-round great grinder

I assume you have DF64 with SSP burrs. Upgrading to DF83 would not make sense. Agree with another poster that P100 would be an upgrade.

I’ve been running my GS3 MP for 10 years or so, I bought it second hand so not $8k thankfully! I’ve upgraded to the conical valve, the connected app, a few other upgrades (that I’ve done myself). My biggest issues is exactly as you said, the water bypassing to the waste tray is really not good. Haven’t upgraded the steam to the latest yet but mostly because it’s kinda expensive for not much difference. The control on the display is really awkward, I feel like I have to impersonate Spock to do anything. The app is much better now with the latest updates but the constant log outs really suck. I switched to using an Apple log in for the app and that works way better. After this many years the drip tray is falling apart and I should get a new one but they’re also really expensive which feels like a bit of a rip off to be honest. I have the smart espresso profiler and the acaia perl drip tray mod so I can track pressure and weight in real time which is really nice also. I feel like I’ve retro-fitted a lot of things to my GS3 to make it match up a bit with capabilities in the market but the inflection point for espresso machines has already happened. I think they’re all going to be tech integrated in the near future and manual stuff like the GS3 will be even more niche than it is now.

Yeah you’ve been on the GS3 for some time now. And I hear you, it’s a good point that the inflection point has indeed happened. La Marzocco is no longer on the cutting edge, and new machines drop at half the price and twice the features it makes it hard to justify the cost for something that works very well, but also hits more or less a bit of a vintage vibe. I’m not sure yet what if any mods I’ll make to the GS3, but I do find myself somewhat drawn to the Bianca V3 when it comes to making certain videos or even the convenience factor.

@@Sprometheus Yeah, I’m waiting until the Synesso ES1 type machines take what Decent started and convert it into a more user oriented experience with all the same capabilities and I’ll likely get something else and, like you said, it’ll be half the price and way less drama. I had been thinking about doing the external gear pump mod to my GS3 (which would solve the wasted water problem) and effectively make it a strada single group. Is it worth it, not really, but it would make the machine more usable in terms of repeatability of shots. As always, thanks for making your vids mate, I appreciate the energy you put in. I don’t remember if you’d done one already but it’d be cool to hear your thoughts on the technology revolution in espresso machines.

In my mind La Marzocco is kinda like the Ferrari of espresso machines. Are there other machines that perform at an equal or slightly higher level? Sure, but that Italian made hand assembled craftsmanship and it's storied history are part of its attraction. I'm glad though that they have come out with the Linea Micro to help make a better price point for the average home enthusiast to be able to afford this kind of machine. They could do well to beef up the tech side of their machines to try and be more comparable to something like the Decent.

I used to have a La Marzocco GS3 AV, so one without the paddle. I got so frustrated that I sold it. Why? * The position of the water tank got me frustrated. The access to the tank is difficult and you can not see if the tank is running out of water * The machine uses indeed lots of water (* rectification: not excessive, see reply) * The hot water that's coming from the boiler into the dip tray broke after a few years of use the plastic inside of the drip tray * The simulated pre infusion called pre brew does not work as good as real preinfusion in my opinion * I had lots of channeling on this machine. Maybe it's because of my lousy technique or it's because of the way the water hits the puck in this machine After I sold it, I used a PID modded E61 machine and at the moment I'm using a Londinium lever machine. Both machines have excellent thermal stability and are just more 'forgiving'. Just brew and enjoy the coffee

I hear you with access to the tank, but it’s essentially the same as the Mini that I used for years so it just feels more or less like normal to me at this point. I’m also with you on the pre-brewing, it’s definitely not the same as pre-infusion and isn’t nearly as effective. I used it on the Mini for awhile. Now with the update both the Mini and the AV GS3 have programmable pre-infusion and pre-brewing, the only caveat to that is it has to be plumbed in. I had lots of channeling on my Mini when I got it too, once I changed the jet from .08 to .06 it decreased the flow into the group and wasn’t as aggressive hitting the puck. Not sure which jet the GS3 comes with but possibly could be that. Either way glad to hear you found a machine you’re happy brewing on, that’s all that really matters.

@@Sprometheus Thanks for your honest review. I sold the machine 8 years ago. About the water usage. I think that in the AV this was indeed less a problem. But I do remember that the machine would loose water from presumably a ovp valve that somehow wanted to simmer during 'on time'. I also tried to find a more restricting jet during that time but I could not find a replacement. Then I probably would have a more positive opinion about this (adjusted) machine.

The biggest flaw with the excess water being routed to the drip tray is excessive temperature drop during long pre-infusions. While a declining temperature profile is indeed tastier than a flat one, the decline when doing a long pre-infusion with a gs3mp can be up to 20 degrees.

This is simply not true. The known temperature issue with the saturated group of the gs3 is an intra shot rise of at least 1ºc, depending on pre-flush time. Even during a flavour muddying 60 second PI of 3.5 bar, the group temp will increase, before beginning to drop only very slightly at the 45 second mark. I guess a heater could be added to the group to bring its temp closer to that of the rest of the boiler, but that's an additional layer of complexity that will require service of its own eventually...

@@ihavenospacebar231 Measured at the group with a Scace, not just by me but by many others as well. What you were looking at was the brew boiler temp on the machine's display. This is at best an approximation of the group temp at the very beginning of the shot only. As the boiler temp sensor is directly in the path of the incoming cooler water, its reading will begin to drop immediately as the shot begins. This is common knowledge that's easy enough to find. But that takes effort - so much easier to just make stuff up.

The boiler has to waste an absolutely massive amount of hot water to do a long-low pre infusion with the bypass method marz uses for the gs3, there will be a significant drop in temperature. Yes, there is an offset in temperature from the water in the boiler to the water hitting the coffee, as in the water cools before it hits the coffee. If you drop the boiler temp down to a point where the machines display estimates that the water hitting the coffee will be 173 (as we see in his earlier video) even if the group still has residual heat in it, there will be a significant drop in coffee water temperature, at the very least you’ll be around 185 brew temp. Unfortunately, I’ve encountered similar types to you online before, and no matter how much you reason or prove your point, they don’t budge. I can’t waste any more time typing away talking to a wall here, but what I said is indeed correct whether I’ve convinced you it is or not. Keep in mind, I’m not saying it’s a bad machine, it’s lovely, this is just a side effect of that particular method of pressure profiling. Also as a disclaimer: none of these statements apply to 220v, as the machine can recover temperature much faster, this only applies to 110.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing! I think LM should work on a Future that can recreate Shotprofiles like the Rocket R Nine One can. In my opinion LM has very nice Maschine but the lack of Features can be a dealbreaker for many People an lead them to other Brands.

Hate to step in, But what you are saying is you want LM to make a machine that is suited for people with zero time to learn. Our we are pros, like most millennials because they wake up. Like coffee roasters, if you are skilled there is ZERO need for a computer to make your roast. The MP is a skill set that is developed. Plain and simple.

But want I was try to say is, that there are Maschines for other Brands wich giving you the opportunity to fiddle around work on you skill set and safe profiles so you can recreate them by a push on a Button . For my household it wouldn’t be an option to have a Maschine that can only do manually Shotprofiling because not everyone is willing to do this every day. I’m not try to say that LM needs to replace the GS3 is beautiful Maschine but in my opinion it would be nice to see something for LM that gives you both options to play around and to have simply a good coffee by flipping a switch or pushing a Button.

Thats why I bought Strada 1group over the GS3. They priced similar. Same internal rotary pump, with mechanical motorized padle, can be with water reservoir or with the plumb. Less water dumping. And yes, I agree with the old digital parts, it can be better than this old type of button & display with that price

The GS3 and Linea aren't justifiable purchases. They aren't machines where you evaluate the utility gained to the dollar spent. There's a huge diminishing marginal utility when purchasing these end game grinders / machines. The GS3 isn't nowhere near 2.5x better than the Bianca V3 on your bar, but who cares. As long as you're happy lol.

The water dumping is very unfortunate, my precious third wave water going down the drain. La Marzocco is one the few very temp stable machines, wish they were more modern. Adding a sensor close to the puck seems like a good idea.

My thoughts? Well, I wasn't aware about the insane water wastage because I only found LM fanboy-reviews on HB and the internet. So when it showed up, brand new, I was really really disappointed. Sent it away and took a financial loss. Then bought a Decent XXL and never ever regretted it. Have had it compared with is LM-profile to a GS3 AV side by side, same bean. There is some difference, but I wouldn't say it is to the benefit of LM. La Marzocco have to up their game regarding this one or I wish they leave the home-user market for good.

An hour late to view this - shame on me. For those who go the GS3 MP route, I salute you and hope your coffee journey and day to day experience delivers; in the same way that a classic sports car or ultra luxury sedan may do in given pride of ownership, history and overall satisfaction. If the intention is to explore different coffee techniques and profiles, then perhaps there are other (cheaper) routes to experimental and repetitive heaven (not wanting to use the "D" word here). Despite my previous comments I still would love to own a La Marzocco (just as I would love to own a classic Aston Martin sports car). Thank you for the video. Stay Safe over the holidays, everyone.

Maybe someday. It was a consideration, but also requires a 220V plug and plan to plumb it in, or sump as well as a gray water line. All of that is complicated and costly when it comes to using it in my studio that doesn’t have plumbing.

Great review as always and 8K is overpriced for what you’re getting; they’re still a-float on their name, but feeling the Ferrari status is changing more into Nokia… The water dump, not able to use the pedal perfectly, steam-wand lever wrong place, crappy display, 30min heating. Can’t believe there are buyers for this model. Just buy a Breville dual boiler, mod it and have the most efficient and precise control on pressure and heats up within 1 min (230V). Or just buy an Apple, I mean Decent when you want more control and quality 🎈

Coming from a Lelit Bianca I had a chance to try the GS3 recently and was shocked by how difficult to use the flow control is in comparison. The pedal is very difficult to control accurately and the pressure gauge actually turns away from the user while adjusting pressure. This, combined with the water spillover, is just poor design in my opinion. LM has some catching up to do with more modern design, not just the Bianca's but also the programmable options that several competitors now offer.

The amount of water waste is crazy. In the 1.5 years of owning my DE1 I have never even filled my drip tray. I also average over 20 milk drinks per 2L of water. I personally don't see where they justify the price.

I think part of the justification comes from its ability to be a workhorse and perform all day in a commercial environment. Also, of course the name drives the price up a little bit. I don’t think when creating this machine their intent was for it to be for home use.
