***** There's a puzzle to "Sleep within the five Hells". The end of Lemeza's pause animation is where he falls asleep, so I have to do that five times in those specific places.

Never seen a hell temple speedrun before, so with a time like that I assumed there was gonna be some glitches involved, but turns out it was all skill (and caltrops, baybeeeee)!

Thanks! My better times definitely include a few glitches that do save some time (and my best time for HT doesn't include all of the glitches that were later discovered), but part of the fun of playing this category was the feeling of beating HT closer to how it was intended as some form of twisted vengeance =P

I swear, you sound almost exactly the same as Michael Cera

Around the 4 minute mark, did you just walk right on the first rising pillar? I tried to jump before but always got crushed to death. Awesome run!

+Dominik Walter Yeah, I just hold down right - no jumping involved. You can do something similar actually for the chain whip puzzle since you have enough time before the crusher hits the ceiling to walk off of it. Thanks! Though this run is a little out of date, my 14:55 is a much better time =P

@hiddendistance. Hey mate.i was wondering...when you started at la mulana, did you figure all the puzzles on your own or did you use a guide? How was your approach your solve them?

I finished the game (and completed non-required content like the flail whip puzzle) on my own without the use of a guide. Opening up Hell Temple, I checked a guide for. Many of the simple puzzles I solved through working/long-term memory. Some of the simple puzzles I solved by accident/fluke. The complicated puzzles I solved by taking good notes - but not just taking them - using the notes. I actually spent some significant amount of time *not* playing the game, and instead thinking about the game and looking over my notes while trying to connect tablets and hints together. I've seen people write a lot of stuff down, but they don't wind up properly using the stuff they wrote down to help them figure things out. Apart from that, I think a healthy attitude of perseverance and thinking about solving the mysteries of the ruins in the mind set that good puzzles are supposed to be hard, and few puzzles that are rewarding for solving can be intuited right away. With that kind of lens, struggling with the game becomes part of the fun, rather than a frustration. Maybe there's a bit of role-playing in there too; taking on the role of an archaeologist trying to figure things out rather than it just being another game to play/beat. I think that's about it. If you're curious about a specific puzzle I might be able to remember (still have my notes lol) how I came around to a solution.

thnx man. now that you give me the chance to ask. the mantras. is there any tablet in the game that explains the idea how to work them out? and the hell temple. where, in the ruins you find the tablets? plus there are certain places like the fall into the lave to get one of the philosophers that i could not found in tablets, or that moment in wich you have to sleep to get the town to be at night.

Yeah, so with respect to the mantra puzzle - I'm going to assume you don't mean the mantra tablets that hint at where to find the mantra tablets themselves; those are a little cryptic but pretty straightforward, nor the tablet hinting at how to get mantra.exe from the relief with the magatama jewel. So the first instruction comes the philosopher in the spring in the sky where he says "Drive 8 wedges into the Mother's body. Take the Djed Pillar and Magatama Jewel in hand and recite the mantra. The mantra has been inscribed upon the markers. Drive the wedges from the heels." Then there's a tablet in the secret shop room next to Michael Jackson in the temple of moonlight which says: "The guardian protects something else. There will be a wedge there. Eight wedges will give form to the soul." The last tablet needed would be this one: "The glowing red crucifix is a beacon that connects the seen and the unseen." Which is super god damn cryptic. That's pretty much the start of it. So, my initial foray into the mantra puzzle was driving Tiamat's wedge by accident - after that happened I tried to figure out why that had happened, and why in that room in particular. Essentially I was working backward from the first solved mantra, with the idea that the 'heel' or backside of each boss room would be the room to chant the mantra in. There were a couple of them where I missed by a room or so, but most of them if I'm remembering correctly, I got the right room on the first try. As for Hell Temple, I did see Mulbruk hinting at it in her dialogue: "Mulbruk has an idea of where he could be hiding. He likes to hide in places it doesn't look like anyone could go." Which is totally specific, and would definitely lead you Dracuet without any doubt. The other clues to opening up Hell Temple are pretty inadequate. Even the ones that do give you a specific clue, like "Back in time you go" - which would absolutely lead you to the gate of time, don't really help you to know that you need to jump through the wall in gate of guidance and then enter a door at the other end of the room. I think in this respect, there's a kind of... easter egg quality for people that played the original game and already know the location of Hell Temple, but it's not much service to someone who had never played it.

tnx for the insight. is clear that you pay a lot of attention to the game, the puzzles and the guides inside the ruins, wich is something i miss in my 1st play. tnx for the ideas, i will put them into practice. have you play la mulana 2? do you plan to speed run it?. tnx for your time and guidance.

I haven't played La-Mulana 2 yet. I've been waiting to stream my first playthrough but I've been busy with school and work of late so I haven't gotten around to it yet. I don't currently have any speedrunning plans (for the same reasons I haven't been streaming, though they have a much larger impact on speedrunning), but if things change up in my schedule it would be nice to pick up a run, and getting involved in routing for LM2 would be pretty fun. The way things are going though, I'd likely be real late to the party.

I've been stuck for ages at the 2:00 mark. no matter how fast I move I can't raise the wall before the bomb reaches it so it bounces away and doesn't break the wall lol
@hiddendistance
@hiddendistance 8 лет назад
+adam caissie An easier strategy is to raise the wall, then use the lamp of time - the wall stays raised, then you can hurl bombs through to your heart's content. It's slower, plus uses the lamp charge which would need to be replaced (which makes it even slower) so that's why I don't use it in the speedrun.

Yea that's exactly what I ended up doing lol. I finished the hell temple yesterday

How did you get the horizontal spikes to disappear over the exit from the second spike shaft at ~12:40?
@hiddendistance
@hiddendistance 8 лет назад
+Kzinssie (porygonlover322) That is a function of the activated difficulty level - In this run I'm playing on hard mode. There's a few other changes to Hell Temple (some subtle and some not-so) but that one is definitely the most noticeable I would say.

Huh, really? That actually seems EASIER than the "easy mode" version.

why do you pause??

you have to "sleep" in every hell / bottom chamber by pausing before the end of Hell Temple
